Since you are in my address book, you will probably find it in your computer, too. The virus (called jdbg.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee Anti-virus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by 'messenger' and by address book, whether or not you sent e-mail to your contacts. Here is how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it. PLEASE DO THIS ASAP: 1. Go to Start, then click your 'Find' or 'Search' option 2. In the folder option, type the name... jdbgm 3. Be sure to search your C Drive and all the sub folders and any other drives you may have 4. Click 'Find Now' 5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe Do not open it! 6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and choose "Select All" to highlight the file without opening it. 7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go to the recycle bin. If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in your Address Book so that they may eradicate the virus from their own address books. To do this: 1. Open a new e-mail message 2. Click the icon Address Book or Contacts next to 'TO' 3. Highlight every name and add to "BCC" 4. I always wonder what people do when they receive loads of junk mail in their mailbox - run out and punch the mailman out for delivering it? It's alot less work, to me, to delete an email I'm not interested in than it is to go thru my mail daily, open it to see if I need it, then throw it in the trash. If you are going to get all "overheated" from a virus warning you don't want to hear about, then don't come crying the next time a virus wipes out your PC because you weren't warned. A great many computer users have no clue what a firewall is, much less McAfee or Norton or their failings. Anyone on this Basia list should be old [mature] enough to be courteous when somebody is trying to be helpful - we are not children anymore, after all, are we? It's just like your tv - if you don't like it, turn the channel (i.e., delete the email). Works well for me, and I don't have to spend my time being angry over unwanted emails. I agree that it was out of line to attack someone for trying to help. While I empathize about the amount of junk mail out there, and that it can be a little irritating at times, something like this isn't meant to be anything but helpful. I'd rather have someone take a cautious approach if they're unsure, rather than just let everything go and let other people worry about it. A lot of people don't know what's real and what's a hoax, especially where virii are concerned. A few weeks ago there were 4 different things going around attacking systems, it can be hard to keep up. If you don't like an email, just delete it. Even if it had been something like a chain letter, it would have been more appropriate to email the sender directly, not attack in public. But this was a genuine attempt to help people, misguided or not. For information on hoaxes, you can check websites like www.symantec.com or www.norton.com or for a wide variety of hoaxes there's www.snopes.com which I use a lot. My apologies for sending out a warning of a possible virus that MAY had been spread via my correspondence. I was wrong and have received e-mail from many of you expressing outrage and have been called moron, icrit (whatever that is...I don't think we have a good speller here). Wow! I cannot imagine WalMart having the good taste to play either Basia or Peter White, but if it makes those two a zillion bucks I'd be in favor of it. Since the 5 Walton siblings, co-owners / co-heirs of the WalMart fortune, are 5 of the top 10 wealthiest people in the world (they were numbers 6-10, at last accounting), they surely should patronize the fine arts. And what all the criticism of him accomplished was getting some kind soul "all up in arms" for being attacked for his good intentions, and we all know that good, helpful, kind intentions are in short supply these days. If these foolish people you believe you are protecting trulyl need a father figure to rudely demand that nobody send out any messages to the list unless there has been a verifiable, scientific study completed on the message's contents, (or until the Spam Cop decides the message is worthy) then I repeat: when these people have their PCs fried by a virus they weren't warned about, they will have no right getting up in arms about the damage some horrible, mean virus did to them. I think it was unnecessary for people to jump all over the guy for doing what he thought was a good deed. Pointing him toward the truth is fine, but being nasty about it is not. Spreading hate and discontent unnecessarily is also foolish. That's not what the Basia list claims to be about, nor why I joined it. Please be kind, guys.
