After all, I've never seen Basia's tapes from other countries so I can't compare mine to them. BTW, is the booklet of LWNY CD containing some cartoon (?) pictures? Desianto F. BTW, Indonesia is not only Bali, Bali is just a small part of Indonesia. Basia is not so popular here recently. It was only for a very short time, in early 1990's. Only some Indonesians know Baby You're Mine but they don't always know the singer or even her full name! How I 'found' her is another story (I hope I can share it someday...) The most popular music here is Dangdut (unfortunately, I don't like it at all!). While for the younger generations, they love BritPop, Boys/Girls Band, and almost all kind of 'junk' (Felix, my guitarist, and I usually call it 'jeng-jeng-jeng' music - read the 'e' in the first two 'jeng' like when you read the 'e' in 'learn' and the last 'e' like in 'get'). While gamelan and keroncong music (both of them are traditional Indonesian music) are not so popular among the youth - but I love kroncong very much. Luckily, there are still some of the young generations 'preserving' the traditional culture, including the traditional dance and music, but, sadly, the government seems to be reluctant in supporting them...:-( For Jazz, the new millenium seems to be the awakening time in Indonesia after it reached the lowest point in late 80's. Actually, Indonesia has some famous Jazz musicians, especially in 70's, such as, Bubi Chen, Jack Lesmana (may his soul rests in peace), his son, Indra Lesmana, Mus Mujiono, Mates, Fariz R. M., Jaya Suprana (he never called himself as a pianist, but he brings a lot of Indonesian folk songs into new beautiful forms), Trie Utami (with her Krakatau band, often make tours in Europe), and more. Even Bubi Chen's albums are more popular abroad than in Indonesia. Jack Lesmana was a musician with a golden heart. He opened a music school in Jakarta, he taught bass. One day, he noticed that there was a young boy, peeking at the window, watched him when he was teaching. When the class was over, he invited the boy, asked him to come to his house, and taught him for free because the boy was so poor. Later, the boy became more famous, and better, than his former students! If I were 20 years older and lived in Jakarta at that time, I would be gladly to learn from him! (but maybe I would never meet all of you!) He was so generous, even he gave his contrabass for his student for free. Many Indonesian musicians admire him for his kindness and talent. Well, I've written too much!. Greetings from Indonesia. Desianto F. W. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier.
