Doubtful I still think everyone's being a bit premature...there's something keeping Basia from making music but we don't know what it is. But to think she's given it up entirely? Seems very unlikely. Can anyone come up with a performer with a similar fan base and level of success as Basia (and a similar age) who has really retired - just walked away? And without a word about it? I've mentioned before the example of Jane Olivor...a singer with a devoted fan base in the late 70's and early 80's who went 18 YEARS without an album before returning in 2000 with a new album. I hope Basia's reasons for not recording aren't similar to those of Jane (husband's illness and eventual death; record label indifference) but we just don't know. I'm not a big gambler but I think it's a safe bet that we haven't heard the last of Basia. I just learned about it this evening, from the member-supported jazz station I listen to (KCSM-FM 91.1, or . I'm also a new fan of Basha. No excuses. I'm just an ignorant fool who allowed the golden days of Basha to slip by unnoticed. Perhaps I was lost in an ancient time working on a book and her voice did not reach me at that time. Anyway, that's my loss. At least now I can listen to her music, never tiring of it, and, in fact, discovering greater depth each time I hear her songs. The fact that English was not her native language is no barrier to her expression. Her poetry and stories in her music are an amazing accomplishment. And her collaborations with Danny and Peter Like you, I am hoping for some new glimpse, some new song from a gifted musical poet, some hope that she will again catch the winged bird of song and send new inspirations of music our way. If she chooses not too, pursuing aspects of life that is precious to her with those she loves, then I will listen in gratitude to the gifts of what she left with us. It is a mystery to me the details of why we have not heard from her since "Sweet Illusions" (not counting "Clear Horizon," which is a compilation of her previous music). If anyone has the real facts on that, I would certainly be most curious to know the answer. If she chooses not to say, then it is none of my business. I would also hope that in our discussions we state clearly when we are just speculating, expressing wishful thinking, or expressing our trepidations. I would not want to be the mindset of the papparazzi or tabloids. My only wish is that there is some way that she will know from time to time that her fans are still out here and still find her music to be timeless. So glad to find others ready to cheer her on. Oh, and: Evidence: a Polish magazine interview in which she says that personal losses led to a long musical drought, and she left Sony since she didn't really want to meet their demands (singing songs by Diane Warren, having songs in commercials, etc) AND that she is working on two albums More evidence: Anyone who has asked poor Peter White about progress is told that there is none. Now, speculation: I'll be really impressed if she puts anything out, but I've been suprised before. I have made peace that I may not hear any more new music, though. - --Leslie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! I am glad somebody in Michigan is "on the ball", as I didn't even notice the spelling error! That is usually my forte, but totally missed that, Leslie. I agree wholeheartedly that Basia's music never wears on me. I have to admit that I am listening almost exclusively to her music, and have for quite a while now. And I don't even have ALL of her stuff yet. Put my vote in as choosing to believe that we have not heard the last from her. It may be simple wishful thinking, but I have decided to keep the faith. :) Phil/not the one on crack! ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V8 #80 **************************
