Jeff, I wonder if we know each other ... were/are you in Bowie? I think the entourage you're describing was overlapped and followed her time with Todd. Todd's an incredibly nice and gentle person. For example - and I swear I'm not making this up - I've seen Todd pick up worms from the sidewalk after a heavy rain, and gently place them back in the grass, speaking to each as he did it - "hey, you guys, you're going to die!" And he was completely serious and concerned. That's Todd. The Eva I first met at his house - we grew up down the street from each other - was a painfully shy person. I didn't know she could TALK, let along sing. I heard about her competitive streak - the one you're describing - which I think developed later. The music she did with Todd was mostly fusion - covers of Bruford, Heart, Asia, and Yes. I saw them perform the complete "Close to the Edge" once in what was easily one of the greatest live performances I've ever seen - and that includes the time that Todd and I saw Yes "in the round" from the 8th row at the old Capital Centre here in DC. But her heart was in blues and folk and the traditional ballads she's now known for. So my perception is that the competitive streak evolved as she got into music that she herself was more passionate about. The sore loser part - I think that would be a pain to deal with. Was it? Even that Bayou gig with the NYC A&R people was not "her" music - that was with the infamous "Method Actor", a pop/rock group that actually was pretty good, but who has ruffled the feathers of the Cassidy family by releasing material against the family's wishes in order to profit, as some would say, off of the Eva frenzy. Eva was said to be unhappy with that material. Disturbing is the word, that's amazing that they did that. Trust me, she was NOTHING like that when I met her and she was performing with Todd. She was younger than us by a year or two, and barely in high school. Todd was rather well established and loved by all, he's got a heart of gold and a solid reputation. Todd's group used to perform for the summer picnics at the Paul Reed Smith guitar shop in Annapolis, his group was a trio of real "musician's musicians". Eva knew she was performing with outstanding people, and was drawn to it, but at the same time developing her love for the older blues tunes. It was that desire to perform other music that caused her to part ways with Todd and their group, which went through different combinations - Stonehenge, Permanent Vacation, etc. But that's amazing that they approached you and demanded money. How ridiculous. So what's the name of your group? I love Eva too. I want to share my idea with you that came from a meeting with Maynard Ferguson a few years back. My husband is/was a trumpet player. He admired Maynard back in the 70's and had met him when he came to a little junior college in California. We have a great preforming center here in Greenville SC (big enough to have Phantom, Itzhak Pearlman, YoYo Ma etc.) Anyway, Doc Severinsen came to the Peace Center and we stayed after to get an autograph. My husband wanted to put it on something that he would keep on him so he handed him a family photo out of his wallet and he signed the back of it. Later we went to see Maynard Ferguson at the beautiful Newberry Opera House and again after the show we stayed for an autograph. Lonnie took out the same family photo and handed it to Maynard. He signed it then pensively held on to it. For an awkward amount of time looking at the signature of Doc Severinsen. He finally looked up at us and said "He and I took lessons from the same tutor." Maynard was from Canada and would come to study in, I think, New York. Well, I am a sociologist with an interest in how people treat others who have more or less income, what some people are willing to do for an income and how a "television" income effects people's "real" life. This moment really touched me and I really believe it could be made into a movie to show the incredible difference of paths in life and bottom line how many individual lives were touched by those paths. Maynard finds new trumpet players who need experience and then gives them a chance to travel with him. He has an unbelievable touring schedual at age 75. http://maynard.ferguson.net/concert.html I know with research and the fact that these two men are still alive and touring it would bring appreciation to their musicianship. I know this is long, sorry. I just had to get it out to a group I think would understand. OK, so nobody gets it. Fine... just fine... Be that way... (I am being funny. Must explain humor. He finally looked up at us and said "He and I took lessons from the same tutor." You are both obviously in the DC area. Steve, I think you said you are in Vienna, VA. Jeff where are you? I live in Baltimore now, but I grew up in the DC suburbs on the Maryland side, near Andrews AFB. Lived there for 24 years. I was also a courier in the DC area for a year, so I know where a lot of stuff is! I still spend a lot of time in the DC area. Anyone heard of a singer named Pam Bricker? She's local to the DC area, and she's at a club in DC called U-Topia--on U St. NW--every Wednesday and Friday night. She's a bit jazzier than Basia, but I like her a lot. And she does a killer cover of Home At Last by Steely Dan! ;) Joe ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 13:45:05 -0400 (EDT) From: dregsfan@bcpl.net Subject: Peter's Christmas shows Hey, has anyone been to see Peter White's Christmas shows? I know, I know, they changed to Dave Koz as the leader of the Christmas troop, but Peter is still in it. I really enjoy these shows and have tried to catch them every year. I think I may have seen them twice at the Birchmere in Alexandria (near Washington DC), at Howard University (in DC), at the Morris Mechanic Theatre (in Baltimore), and most recently at Constitution Hall (also in DC). They're great shows, and I like all the various people that have played with Peter in these shows over the years. It has been interesting and encouraging to watch the attendance and venue size grow over the years. :) Joe ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 13:45:31 -0400 (EDT) From: dregsfan@bcpl.net Subject: Peter White BTW, how do you all feel about Peter's solo stuff anyway? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 14:03:10 -0400 From: "Steve O'Hearn" Subject: RE: Meeting musicians, cont'd Baltimore - ever go to the Belvedere on the 13th floor? Todd - the guitarist I spoke of who used to perform with Eva Cassidy - is there most Friday nights. He's touring Europe for the next few weeks, but if you visit http://www.marblehallsmusic.com, you can see his schedule. Never heard of Pam Bricker, but heard of U-Topia. Also - isn't there a revived old blues club from the 20's that was recently reopened in DC? - -----Original Message----- From: owner-basia@smoe.org [mailto:owner-basia@smoe.org]On Behalf Of dregsfan@bcpl.net Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2003 12:58 PM To: basia@smoe.org Subject: RE: Meeting musicians, cont'd Hey Steve and Jeff! Looking forward to seeing Peter this Sunday with the Guitars & Saxes group...will be the first time I've seen Peter as a (co)headliner after seeing him once with Al Stewart and 3 times with Basia. Of course Basia always had him come forward for one solo tune during her shows, where he inevitably blew the audience away.
