Hi Leslie, Well, I guess the thing that surprised me most was that she took the chance of inviting us up onto the bus. I mean, we could have been ANYONE! There was no security to speak of, no other vehicles or people anyhwere nearby, and basically the venue had completely cleared out by that point. Fans had gone home and only a few crew were still loading stuff out of the venue, about 100 yards away. Fortunate for her we are just nice guys and completely harmless. But it was a memorable experience. :) And honestly, the venues she was playing on that tour were not that big, so meeting her was not difficult. In fact, I've met many, many of my favorite musicians purely due to the fact that they were playing small venues. If you've never tried to meet anyone before, generally, the smaller the venue, the better your chances. And sometimes in small venues, there is actually time and space set aside after the show for the performers to do a meet & greet with the fans. Ah yes, but if anyone has been busy the past almost-ten years, it has been Kevin Robinson. The Township Express bunch alone crosses over into so many other groups, I at the moment can't even remember them. And he still has sessions with folks like Paul McCartney and Steve Winwood and probably 75,000 other people. But best of all, Kevin is musical director of this group: http://www.dunejazz.com/dune_artists/jazjam_allstars_frameset.html I could go on for days on how cool Jazz Jamaica All Stars is. I bought Massive when I was in the UK and was promptly blown away. They take Jamaican mento, ska and reggae, combine it with American music and haul all of that into a big band context. What ends up happening is a huge, giant band of most of the best players in UK doing "Dolphin Dance" "Confucious" "Walk On By" and --no kidding-- the theme from The Godfather! Kevin directs the band and arranges a bunch of songs ("Walk on By" is gorgeous) and manages to play a lot too. The whole thing has such heart and energy and is just so damn good. If you can, pick it up! It will be hard to find, but worth it. My biggest regret was they were playing live shortly after I left! Here is a link to a concert video that was given on BBC 3. It is well worth the hassle of dealing with Real: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jon3/jon3jjhome.shtml Putting aside any connection with Basia, Kevin as a musician just kicks ass. Phew. I think ten years ago I went to a concert on a park on the Clinton River in Mount Clemens, Michigan, with a wee gazebo somehow retrofitted for concerts and just enough room for about 100-200 to sit. We just walked down the street from my Dad's home and there was music! Not a bad deal. That was how I ended up meeting Keiko and Kazu Matsui and pre-stardom Paul Taylor. Even though it began raining through the signing session, they all stuck around to sign CDs and placards-- I think I still have mine somewhere. She signs in both English and Japanesse. Hee hee, it was cool, now that I think of it! It has been a long time since I had even listened to her music. - --Leslie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
