The concert was held in the beautifully restored RKO Orpheum theatre in downtown Memphis, just off Beale St. A 2,000 seat(give or take) house with awesome acoustics, gold leaf mouldings, and antique chandeliers all over the place. I bought the last ticket up in the nose bleed section for the concert originally scheduled for May 24th, but was postponed due to artist illness. It was worth the 6 month wait. Binoculars made being 5 stories up tolerable. If there was one disappointment for the whole evening, it was that she came out in jeans instead of giving us red blooded males a chance to ogle at those fantastic legs of hers. Oh well, it allowed me to focus on the music more. The concert started off rather slowly and built up momentum as the hour and 40 minute set carried on. Her version of "The Look of Love" is slower than normal, but the live version was even slower than the CD. Gawd, is this woman gorgeous or what? Her band consisted of Anthony Wilson on the acoustic and hollow-bodied Gibson electric guitar, Jeff Hamilton on a simple trap set, and John Clayton, a veritable virtuoso on the upright bass, bow and all. This combo had been playing together on tour for 18 months and it showed. This was the final stop on the tour as well. They probably didn't do 15 songs total(including a couple verses of "Heartbreak Hotel" to tease the locals), but each song carried major breaks in the middle where the artists really opened out. Her 9 foot Steinway had at least 4 mics on it and she made it sing. I'm convinced you go see Diana Krall live for the same reason you go see Al Jarreau live(as oppossed to CD's). She even did a little scat singing, which I've not heard to this point. The crowd was a rather reserved bunch, making only a few blurted out "We love you Diana" styled outbursts. I still don't have a clue how old she is(and can't find documentation anywhere), but her performance will not soon be forgotten. End of report.
