Why not judge Basia's singing abilities by 'Departures' then, it's from 1983, and her songwriting by 'How Dare You'. Then we'll continue with Everything But The Girl (God, this Thorn girl really has a nasal voice, if you listen to 'When All's Well'), Alanis Morissette (have you heard her Canadian disco records? this girl only does bubblegum pop) etc. I think the lot of you happen to be somewhat blinded by the fact that Madonna had a book called 'Sex'. This was done to promote her weakest album, 'Erotica'. The album didn't sell. The book did. I'm sure none of you bought it. :) But BEFORE she did the book, she recorded 'Like a Prayer' which happens to be one of the finest pop albums ever, together with Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation 1814'. And years AFTER she did the book, she did 'Ray of Light'. The album. And how about we judge her vocal abilities by the Evita performance? Catherine, why do you think Madonna 'feels compulsively driven to make money after having over $830 million'? Maybe she in fact wants to be an artist (I can hear your cynical laugh, Star Eyes :) and records music because she feels she has something to say. Do you think that there is a certain sum of money that one should earn and after that they have to retire? I happen to really, really like Madonna and I don't want her to retire. I want her to record more albums like 'Ray of Light' and 'Music'. I don't care if she sells 5 millions of copies of each and earns another 10 million $. I don't care if she strips naked. I care about the music and in the world of britneys, willyoungs, celinedions and mariahcareys Madonna is a breathe of fresh air... or a ray of light, indeed. I think I'll shut up now. It's a bit like discussing gay rights with a homophobe: whatever I say, how many logical points I make, you know better anyway. In your world Madonna is a slut and she can do nothing to change it. By the way, the naked photos of Madonna in Playboy and Penthouse were made years before she became famous (these days she had to live on food she found on the garbage bins) and published, oh well, years AFTER she became famous, and it's not as if someone asked her permission to do that. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 21:50:18 -0500 From: "Paul S. We are all going to stand by the artists that we call our favorites, and be honest about those that we don't. I'm just having trouble understanding all this disgust about Madonna. Granted, she probably was a huge whore and a tramp and the trashiest thing this side of the garbage dump. Who cares? I wouldn't necessary call her that today, though. She's dealing with too many diapers now. Most of this image she portrays to the public is just a ploy to get things stirred up. Get people talking. Get her agenda out. Make a living, whatever. Yes, she's a very wealthy woman, but I hardly call her a money raker. Talk to Bill Gates or one of those people in trouble for the Enron scandal. If Madonna was so concerned about maintaining her $830 wealth, why is she going to star in a play, "Up For Grabs," in London's West End? It can't pay her that well. There could be about a million things she could do to increase her money pot, but she's not doing it. For all of us that love Basia and her "image," what makes us think that she's been a perfect little angel? And if we were told something that would conflict this perfect image of her, how would that make us feel? How would that make us feel about her music--would it no longer had the effect that it has on us now? Would her talent erode away in an instant? What would happen if we found about some long lost pictures that suddenly showed up in an issue of Hustler? I'm not the biggest fan of Madonna's music. She is one of the artists I admire the most, almost over any other though. For the fact that she has been around nearly 20 years in the music business and people are still talking about her. This list is evidence of that! She is still able to hit number one songs, and able to sell million of records. Her concert tickets sell out. She's got to be doing something right. raburabu joe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 22:40:39 -0500 From: Timothy Yap Subject: Re: Madonna and electronics In relation to the Basia-Madonna debate, I think someone on the list when he/she said it's unfair to compare Basia and Madonna. They are both different artists--each has her own marketing and artistic excellency. Every artist before their claim to fame have recorded some "embarrassing" records. Shania Twain before her Mercury contract sang very embarrassing hard rock. At that point, many of these artists do not have the experience, money, producer, record company to allow them to fully express themselves. So, it's unfair to judge Madonna by her "Lucky Star" record. I am not a BIG fan of Madonna but I must say the lady knows her way to stay on top and still write, produce, record songs that are just as diverse. "Music" sounds nothing like "Like a Prayer" or "Cherish." Just some thoughts, Timothy At 10:49 AM 3/4/02 +0100, you wrote: > >Gee, 'Lucky Star', from 1984. Madonna was featured in Forbes magazine a few years ago as arguably the most business-savvy "musician" in the entertainment industry. They cited her corporation that handles her publicity and her deliberately planned "scandals" that timed well with the release of key albums or movies, and noted that she makes every significant decision and runs the company very closely. She's a marketing machine. - - Steve P.S. An artist? C'mon now...................... Jim P." She would definately admit to doing things for their shock value. She won't lose any sleep if people think that. It'd just part of her act. (What's Basia's act, anyway? Is her he lack of an "act" that we love about her? Is it that the beautiful angelic singer just part of her act, whether she is like that in real life or not?) Less we not forget that this trashy whorey slut (Madonna) has done vast more than her fair share of charitable work, and won awards for it. Especially AIDS related work. She has helped bring out gay and lesbian issues to the forefront and made people think about "sex," either for the good or the better. C'mon now................. she can't be all that bad. And lest we not forgot the Rock the Vote campaign she did in the early nineties (even though she wasn't registered herself! :)) What is an "artist" anyway? That could be the start of volumes and volumes of e-mails and opinions! I think the only thing that matters is that a performer is able to reach someone on some level, that provides and escape from the daily norm for whatever reason. Okay, I know I'm going to get myself in trouble for that one! What about Marilyn Mason or Insane Clown Posse? I guess I just have given up worried about such artists like that, it's just wasted time. If their jelly works for someone else, whatever. Just as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else are cause violence. I just get on with my life and concentrate on what artists do it for me. Namely, Basia!!! raburabu joe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 22:58:53 -0500 From: "John Palcher" Subject: Re: Madonna and electronics "P.S. And she's a porn queen."
