I do like the Sweetest Illusion. I like the piano solo on Ordinary People better than whatever the other song that was mentioned. Songs are in three categories for me. I hate them, they do nothing for me one way or the other, or I like them. I do not hate any of the songs Basia has done, but there are some that do nothing for me. I just finished listening to my 2-CD Basia favorites that I burned earlier this week. Please no lectures. I bought all the CD's and I just compiled my favorites of off them. So Basia has gotten the royalties. By the way, some of my favorite songs were off of the Best Of Basia and Brave New Hope that are not available anywhere else. Instead, I'll tell you what is on my 2 Basia CDR's: CD 1 From Time and Tide: ***************************** 1) Promises 2) Run For Cover (I like how these two go well together. The opening piano part is in the same key that Promises ended on) 3) Time and Tide 4) Freeze Thaw 5) New Day For You (one of the two songs I heard on the radio that got me interested in checking her out) 6) Prime Time TV 7) Astrud 8) How Dare You From London, Warsaw, New York ******************************************** 1) Crusin For Bruisin (the other song I heard on the radio) 2) Best Friends 3) Ordinary People ( Like I said earlier, I really like the piano parts and the chord progressions in the solo. And I also like Basia's jazz vocals, harmonizing with herself that comes in later) 4) Until You Come Back To Me (The lyrics almost sound like she's stalking someone. If only...) 5) Copernicus 6) Not An Angel CD 2 From "Best of" and "Brave New Hope" ***************************************** 1) Until You Come Back To Me - special remix 2) Give Me That 3) Cruisin For Bruisin - special remix 4) Waters Of March (even though I like Basia's version, my fav is still Art Garfunkel's version because of the neat and weird chords in the background) 5) Go For You 6) Half A Minute (live) 7) Angels Blush From The Sweetest Illusion *********************************************** 1) Drunk On Love (Like Ordinary People, I like Basia's jazz vocals in harmony with herself again towards the end of the song) 2) Yearning 3) The Sweetest Illusion 4) More Fire Than Flame 5) Simple Pleasures (For me, this is the best song to have at the end. It's somewhat melancholy feel and it's message kind of brings me down gently to earth after the more up tempo tunes earlier.) How's that? Trey Lorenz was his name, according to the CD insert. He's one of Mariah Carey BG singers, apparantly, and has credits on lots of albums: http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/results.asp?ctr=86390 That section of that song reminds me of "Mormon Pop Music". You've probably never heard any; the popularity of that kind of music is pretty much limited to the Great Basin in the U.S., such as Utah, Southeast Idaho, parts of Nevada, etc. I was working in Provo, Utah (HQ of Novell, a successful niche technology company) at the time that TSI was getting radio play. I put the disc into a player at work and was listening when this occured to me. I called over one of the "Known Mormons" in the department and said "Does this sound like Mormon Pop to you?" "Yipe, it sure does!" "Prime Time TV", and pretty much any of the other lyrics penned by Peter Ross do nothing for me. This is not to say that Ross' stuff is necessarily worse than the average bubble-gum pop lyric out there, I'd put it on par with lyrics sung by Britney Spears and her ilk: fun (I suppose) but ultimately meaningless can-d. In fact, my favorite of the albums is LWNY, because I can listen to all of it in one sitting without dumb lyrics. Basia's voice, the music, and her production team saved most of these stinkers from being an embarassment overall, but I have to say that when my Basia-ambivalent friends point to why they don't like Basia, they point to a Peter Ross song: "Why on earth is she singing about bad TV shows?" My take is that people will admit TV is full of junk and then still watch it for hours every night. I have a few shows I watch regularly, but I can't sit in front of show if I am not interested in it. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2002 17:19:55 EST From: Gohankla@aol.com Subject: Re: Not-so-favorite I think I have listened to "almost all" of Basia's songs and at least "like" all of them. There is an American musician named Danny White from the New Jersey region of whom I have no knowledge, yet if you go down the Google hierachy this guy has HUNDREDS (well, mabey dozens, but it don't matter) of cites. The bottom line for me is I can find out what this guy is doing even tho I can really give a care. What gives, here? Where the hell is OUR Danny, these days? He can't just be hanging loose, doing heroin or crack. The music business is extremely dynamic. You have to make it happen. Sitting in on other artist's gigs; contributing to the production of other artist's albums; making things happen, in the business sense, in the artistic sense. I really cannot believe Danny HAD to have Basia in order to produce/create. I rather think of him as a Burt Bacharach kind of guy. Striving as a pianist, succeeding as a composer. Most promising as an individual artist. Where the hell is he? Phil ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V7 #24 **************************
