There is also a Brazilian singer who goes by the single name of Astrid - but I don't know if she's ever recorded anything with George. Astrud, like most of the original Bossa Nova bunch, was never a great singer - her association with pitch was, well, let us say occasional. But her soft delivery was what Bossa Nova required. Astrid, on the other hand, is a much better singer, in the traditional sense. I think handwritten would be nicer than typed IMHO: Dear Basia, I don't know how many letters you get any more, but I wanted you to know that we fans of your music are still out here. I remember driving in my hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas in 1987 when I first heard "Time and Tide" on my then local smooth jazz station (since gone the way of Country and Tejano). I kid you not when I tell you that I was so taken by what I heard that I turned my car around and went to the radio station (mainly since they had not ID'd any of the songs in the block and I *HAD* to know who sang it!). I went in, and I started talking to the deejay on a break, and she was like, "Oh yeah.... that's Basia, 'Time and Tide', we're promoting it at the Record Factory" (local music store) -- isn't it great?" And he gave me a mirror of the smile I had on my face from listening to you. Needless to say, I drove over to the record store ( "Time and Tide" was the "New album of the month" at the store.) and grabbed my CD and took it home.... I listened to the whole album all day. My husband came home from work and after he got settled, I said, "You have to listen to this"... and he got hooked. Since then, we've bought all we could find, even when (from our small town/city perspective) Epic/Sony won't promoting you -- like when we found "The Sweetest Illusion" as a new release while on vacation! We loved catching you on Letterman, The Tonight Show, Arsenio (your Arsenio appearances were my favorite since you got to sit and chat more!), and I remember when you were promoting "Basia on Broadway" on fX's "Breakfast Time" show -- I nearly considered charging a trip to New York City to try and see you until you said the show was sold out! (which may have been best for my credit rating!) Sadly, I've never seen you perform on stage, and it wasn't until 1994 or so when we first joined the internet community that I found a whole mess of folks who love your music as much as I do! We have what is called a "mailing list" at basia@smoe.org; we have a comprehensive site about you at Basiaweb (http://basia.techwood.org/); I too wanted to assist in bringing you to the public so I teamed up with another Basia fan and together we created Basia: The International Discography (http://members.tripod.com/~Basiafan/). On the site Kevin Segura and I created for you, Kevin has found information on just about every release of your music, videos and merchandise... something we do as a labor of love. But mostly what we've done as fans of your music is.....well, waited. Waited to hear when the next album was coming or the next tour - -- which I wanted to know about so badly since I want to see you perform live....a dream I've held since 1987. We fans have exchanged information about you, discussed our favorite songs, other artists who we've tried or gravitated towards since they were one of your influences or that they mentioned *you* as one of their influences. We've shared why a song is important to us, what it is was in the lyrics that affected us, the concerts that others have been able to attend, imagined what we would do if we got to go to a concert and all. I know I was the first person at my local Best Buy to get "Clear Horizon", and we totally enjoying "Go For You" and "Clear Horizon"... we kept waiting.... and waiting... to hear when the new album is coming. You may not know this, but your music and merchandise is sold *daily* on internet sites like eBay and yahoo - sometimes as many as 100 items a day - I know, since this is how I picked up some "rarities" I never could have found in my town: "Greatest Remixes 1 & 2", presskits, songbooks and more. Now I gotta tell you that the internet is a quick gossip line, we have people in our huge circle of fans who (of course) also listen to Peter White and of course we ask him (a lot!): "Have you heard from Basia and Danny? Anything about the new album?" So we hear little things that make us ask more about you and hoping that another project is on the way.... I hope you've considered other avenues for releasing your music. Many artists are successfully selling their music through the internet and I'm certain that more than a few of us fans would be willing to assist you with the effort. (I myself would be more than willing to help you and Danny in that endeavor!) Why wait for the corporate music execs to realize that we don't want the latest "Britney/N*sync" contrived rip-off, we want true artistes who are true to their creative vision. For many of us your music is a salve, a balm for our weary souls. A gentle but strong voice that lifts us up in times of trouble bringing a smile back to one's face... I know many of us have written about our special "Basia moments" - when we are out and about: shopping, at the gym, or restaurant when out of the blue we hear a Basia song.... to me, when I hear a song of yours in a place like that I just stop and reflect with a big smile on my face, sometimes humming and singing along.... the music making everything, even the mundane of shopping or working out more special. It's that special feeling I get when I listen to your music that I do not want to give up without a fight. If some faceless record executive is telling you "the fans aren't there" -- well WE ARE! And we wait for you.... loyally we wait. If there is however anything we can do to help you in getting your message out there, let us know. I await the day I can be watching you live on stage making a magical experience for us all. I've been extremely fortunate to have seen her twice - once on the "London, Warsaw, New York" tour, and then again just after the release of "Sweetest Illusion". Being in Charlotte, North Carolina (not exactly a hotspot for musical artists), I was quite pleasantly surprised when I found out that she was coming here for both tours. Smaller venue - maybe 3,000 seats... but great accoustics and I liked the more "intimate" scale than an arena would have provided. Let me say this for those of you who have, sadly, not had the opportunity to hear and see her perform live: Her voice is as flawless in person as it is when captured in the studio, even on those long notes from "Time & Tide", and her energy level is exactly as one would expect; Basia is very animated and personable - taking the time to talk with the audience on a limited basis between songs. My big regret is not being brave enough to go down front after the show and get my CD covers autographed... and maybe even get the chance to actually speak with her. Next time, if the gods should perchance smile down upon us, I will be there and won't pass up that opportunity again! My letter to her will be going in the mail this week! Thankfully I DID gather up the courage to wait backstage after I saw Basia on 2 consecutive nights in Phoenix back in 1990. I have tried that enough times to realize that you never know what sort of reaction you'll get from a performer - usually ranging from a quick smile and autograph at best, to being totally ignored as the artist rushes to their bus. Not with Basia - she greeted her backstage fans as if we were her best friends. I could scarcely believe how NICE she was...made time for everyone who took the time to wait for her after the show. I told her how much I liked her music, she thanked me profusely, then I somehow got the nerve to make a request - asked if she would sing "Half a Minute" the next night. She checked with Danny, who said "no problem," and sure enough they added it to the show the next evening. We didn't have our cameras that first night, so after the second night's show, we waited backstage again, and Basia was again delightful and charming to everyone. She remembered us from the night before, and took time to pose with each of us for photos. Then as I thanked her again for being so kind, SHE stepped forward and gave me a hug! As you might imagine I more or less floated back to the hotel. I'll have to admit I was sort of dissappointed with Sade's "Lovers Rock" when I first heard it. The more and more I listen to it, it grows on me. I actually think it is a well-made album. Maybe there was just so much time between the last studio album and "Rock," we didn't know what to expect from her. I saw her perform live in Cincinnati last September. The audience left more to be desired (quite noisy and a little rude), but Sade was fabulous. She has a wonderful knack to nail down some of her notes. It was also my frist exposure to India.Arie, who opened up for her. Hoping that she wins at least a few Grammies out of her seven nominations this year.
