Astrud Gilberto: brilliant Brazilian songstress, best known in the US for her recording of "The Girl From Ipanema," with Stan Getz. Obviously a main source of inspiration for Basia. Listen to the lyric again...it is definitely about her. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 09:37:18 est From: whroberts@iquest.net Subject: Re: station I found that plays Basia songs >Astrud Gilberto: brilliant Brazilian songstress, best known in the US for her >recording of "The Girl From Ipanema," with Stan Getz. Obviously a main >source of inspiration for Basia. Listen to the lyric again...it is >definitely about her. > There are transcripts of interviews that Basia has had over the years on one of the Basia fan sites. In one of those, it is definitely stated that indeed "Astrud" is about Astrud Gilberto. There is even a picture of Basia and her together in one place. Basia states that AG was one of her heroes. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2002 01:19:20 +0100 From: "Ben van Maaren" Subject: Re: Astrud I quite agree, Ben. That album is actually one of the first CDs I ever bought! If it's no longer available, you might want to check out the "Silver" album, which is still widely available and carries a larger range of Astrud's songs. But if you can, try to get the "Compact Jazz" album. Socks knocking good stuff. As re: Astrud. Anyone know the origins of this particular name? I've done some looking around the Web, and have gotten nowhere. When I was quite a bit younger I lived near Cape Canaveral, Florida. Our next door neighbor was (seriously, folks) a German rocket scientist. His daughter, quite Nordicly gorgeous and blonde, was named Astrud. She was a senior at Satellite High School - I was but a mere 7th grader. My Dad caught me in the act of observing one of Astrud's pool parties from our roof. Phil (still infatuated with Basia and Astrud) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 19:31:30 -0600 From: Dan Meyer Subject: Musical Tastes I've recently discovered Sergio Mendez and Brrasil 66. I also enjoy the Carpenters, Melissa Manchester, Matt Bianco, Steely Dan, Spyro Gyra, Earth, Wind and Fire, Manheim Steamroller and C.W. McCall (!) I find almost everything on the radio these days in Minneapolis - Saint Paul very unsatisfying. This might have something to do with my demographic profile - I'm a 40 year old male computer professional. Oh for the days of the upstart KTCZ - the Cities 97. That's the station that had the guts to play Basia 15 years ago. They've since been bought by one of the big radio conglomerates, and the music just isn't the same. - -- Dan Meyer ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 22:28:21 -0500 From: jp Subject: Re: Astrud At 07:52 PM 1/30/02 -0500, you wrote: >As re: Astrud.
