Pretty much unlimited; from releasing an album through a smaller company, through releasing it on her own, up to releasing it as mp3s at www.mp3.com/basia. The question is, would she bother? Or she might do the Marillion thing - Marillion sold their album in advance, before it was recorded - in other words, they collected money from their fans to be able to record the album. Does that sound good? (BTW, I tried to find out with how many bands I would pay for the album not hearing a single note and the sad conclusion is, it would only be Everything But The Girl, Bjork and Pet Shop Boys.) The music industry has been changed again by a company called Clear Channel Communications - one that's not well known outside of broadcasting - - but it owns more radio stations than any other company in the US (about 1400) plus a dozen or so TV stations. It's a very hard-nosed operation - I know, I once worked for Cheap Channel, as we called it. A while back, Clear Channel bought SFX Entertainment, which books the big concerts and tours for major acts and renamed it Clear Channel Entertainment. Now, and this is admitted by Clear Channel, Clear Channel radio stations are limiting their air-play to artists who are booked by Clear Channel Entertainment. That will severely limit the artists who can get airplay. How will the music industry counter this? MTV? Internet radio stations? This is a list of intelligent people - who has an idea? un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 09:20:01 EST From: JPovlock@aol.com Subject: Re: Clear Channel This is not a good thing. This smacks even more of making disposable music for the masses. I sense a lot of artistic controls here. The thought police are out again! I can also see lots more non-talents like Britney coming along, since she has a Playboy-caliber body :) Wait, that was discussed already on this list, right??? I played golf this summer with a guy who is a GM for two local radio stations here in Buffalo. One station is an adult soft rock station, the other an urban R & B station. Talk about opposite ends of the musical spectrum. I asked him about playlists and variety, and about companies like CBS coming up with one format for their stations across the country. He said that there was so much money involved that one couldn't take any chances. It came down to playing the same old songs and artists so that you didn't offend anyone. I worked at a store for the past two years that had a Muzak system. It had four formats available, and they were pretty good. At least there was some variety. About a week ago I got transfered to another store without Muzak, that you have to play the radio for music throughout the store. I have really not listened to the radio for two years, but when I played this one, there were two different stations PLAYING THE SAME SONGS AND OLDIES THAT THEY DID TWO YEARS AGO!!!! I'm telling you, I wanted to scream. The music industry industry is in trouble, I suspect.
