I had assumed that the 'J' would be pronounced 'H' as in Spanish. Also it would have *never* occurred to me that the 'G' in the last name might be pronounced that-a-way :o) BTW, I used Morpheus to download a copy of Bebel Gilberto and Kenny G's collaboration on "The Girl From Ipanema", which is from one of Kenny's albums. Very beautiful rendition. Sorry Astrud, no disrespect intended, but the Bebel/Kenny version is far superior imho. Bebel begins singing in English, then switches to Portuguese. Kenny is also very good here. I certainly hope they do some more work together. I have Bebel's 'Tanto Tempo' CD (nice!), and also have downloaded a couple of earlier singles which she recorded in Brazil. I have become quite infatuated with Bebel :o) ~ Jim >From: Denis Naranjo >Reply-To: basia@smoe.org >To: basia@smoe.org >Subject: Re: Joao Gilberto 2.0 >Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 10:17:14 -0700 > > >-Jim, > >a challenge 2detail here but.... >use a 'z' sound in his first name, a combo of >'z' with 'sh' at the same time, only one syllable...'zshow". >it's hot a hard 'j' at all, but a 'j+z+sh' phonetically. >the second name is also special, 3 syllables but >the beginning 'g' is pronounced similarly....."zshil-bere-toe". > >Denis >Jim C wrote: > > > > Would anyone on the list know how to pronounce Joao Gilberto's *first* >name? > > He is from Brazil (Developed Bossa Nova, also is father of Bebel >Gilberto:) > > and my Portuguese isn't up to much. Not that I'd expect anyone would notice, but I thought I'd just say "hi" after having been offline since late June (trying to work out some "personal life" stuff...) :^( And I admit that I didn't have the gumption to comb through all of the smoe.org archives for the past couple of months-- hope I didn't miss much!! [Oh, and Bev-- drop me an e-mail off-list, and I'll see what I can do about getting you the pix you need for the discography] :^) Anyhow, howdy again from the left coast of the U.S., folks... let's hope we all have something to talk about soon! - -Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 06:29:23 -0500 From: "Jim C" Subject: Re: Hello, all... >>>Anyhow, howdy again from the left coast of the U.S., folks... let's hope we all have something to talk about soon!<<< *Sigh* me too. If only Ms. Trzetrzelewska & Group were a bit less reticent. A simple "We are seeking" or "We negotiating" would be nice to hear. It is rather frustrating to hear from Peter that completion of the material for a CD is imminent, then the key players remain silent for months thereafter. Oh well, blessings to all of 'em for their womderful accomplishments since the 80's, in the *very* difficult music environment. Not being in the industry, I had no idea just how difficult it is until I read Basia's 1999 interview from Poland (Thanks Ray!!!! That was a LOT of translation!). Knowing these things causes me to appreciate the artists and their work a good deal more. ~ Jim >From: Joel Cairo >Reply-To: basia@smoe.org >To: basia@smoe.org >Subject: Hello, all... >Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 00:32:28 -0700 > > >Not that I'd expect anyone would notice, but I thought I'd just say "hi" >after having been offline since late June (trying to work out some >"personal life" stuff...) :^( > >And I admit that I didn't have the gumption to comb through all of the >smoe.org archives for the past couple of months-- hope I didn't miss >much!! > >[Oh, and Bev-- drop me an e-mail off-list, and I'll see what I can do >about getting you the pix you need for the discography] :^) > >Anyhow, howdy again from the left coast of the U.S., folks... let's >hope we all have something to talk about soon! > >-Kevin _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 21:22:20 -0700 From: "Steve Richardson" Subject: Willa Ford Saw an interesting item at Circuit City today...one of the artists featured on their listening station this month is Willa Ford. The blurb above her CD states that among her diverse influence are "Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Basia, and Radiohead." I give her credit for good taste...although I don't hear any Basia influence coming through in her music. Sounds more like a Britney wannabe.
