It was on the "Wave" station here in Cleveland. Some of the "Top 40" and "Light Rock" stations were playing it, too. I saw her in concert. She was incredible with a great rapport with the audience. Ottmar Liebert opened for her. I certainly hope we see more from her soon. Fish" Subject: Would you like some cheese with that whine? Let me try to explain myself on using the word "whiney" when I frist heard the luminous voice of Basia. It was the mid-eighties and I was totally into both Heavy Metal and Pop. During those years I saw all sorts of bands from Kiss and Queensryche to Thompson Twins and Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark. I worked in a retail store that played Muzak through really bad mono speakers. Since the radio stations that I listened to did not play a very wide variety of music, the Muzak was a rather unfortunate window to other worlds. So when I heard "Who's Side Are You On?" sometimes as much as twice a day, I began to tire of it, and the female vocalist who sang the chorus came out very whiney sounding (remember - BAD speakers). So years later while I was watching the VH1 special and fell in love with the soothing, luscious sounds, I was stunned (STUNNED!) that this was the same woman who's voice I had disregarded a few years only. It is some sort of strange twist of fate that I now can't get enough of that voice. So, in closing, it wasn't her voice that was actually whiney, it was my ears that just needed a little fine tuning! Paul By the way - I now own many different versions of the classic "Who's Side Are You On" (CD, LP, tape, 12" single, 7" single). So here I am, chewing my own words, and enjoying them with a glass of milk.
