Anyway, I'm still here (and yes Kevin still trying to update the website the way I'd like....need some photos still I think!) and praying for Basia to be able to make a resurgance as Sade has... they said on cnn.com that she's touring even. *Deep sigh* I truly wish Basia and Danny the best and hope they can come out for some more tours, but the music industry as it stands now is pathetically limiting itself to all have the same sounds with (as far as I'm concerned) anonymous interchangeable singers (I refuse to call them artists!). I can't tell Britney from Christina from N'snyc... to me this is like Menudo - -- use 'em up and move on. Ray made an excellent point about an artist HAVING to sell a certain point now... the support of the industry is no longer there and that is sad. (Quite a bit of non-country work is done in Nashville.) I was all set to run up there and meet the dynamic duo. But, I don't know if it ever came to pass...I suspect not. Peter White would know. Roach....yeah, he was something. I received about half of the merchandise he promised. To this day, I don't think he was intentionally trying to swindle anyone, I think he just "lost it" for whatever reason. I met Diane and Peter White in LA several years ago. Had a nice long chat with Peter... incredible artist and a wicked sense of humor. You have to understand that, while he has literally established "smooth jazz" as a format and is quite the celebrity now, for many years he was somewhat known as "Basia's guitarist." This must have been very frustrating for him as he is an incredibly talented artist in his own right - has penned several hit songs - and shouldn't have had to be in her shadow for so long. I am so thrilled for him and his success. I understand Jeff (the listserv owner) maintains an archive of all posts, and there should be a command to obtain a list of all members subscribed to the Basia listserv. Jeff is a great guy. A couple of times throughout the years, he has requested small contributions to keep the list running. He does it for free and as a labor of love. I've always donated to the cause. Ben maintains what is arguably the very best archive of her material in his CD compilations. This is also a true labor of love. For those of you not familiar with media production, it represents 100s of hours of work. Thanks Ben! Many of our list members have incredible careers and stories. Many are wonderful moms and dads working their own miracles by raising great kids. It occurs to me we should really try to have a "reunion" of list members somewhere central to the country next Spring. We really do represent a very diverse group of folks. Anyone game? And before that he spent a decade or more known as "Al Stewart's guitarist" (and collaborator). Must be especially nice to carve out his own niche in the music world. I always used to wonder why Basia's shows didn't start off with a set by Peter. Indeed, the first two times I saw her live, Ottmar Liebert and his group opened the show. I wondered, why hire another guitarist to open when you have Peter White in the auditorium. With Peter's growing fame, by the next time Basia tours, she may have to open the show for him. Brian Cundieff here. I've mostly kept quiet since coming to Japan three years ago, which was also about the time I nearly got burned on Roach's close-out sale. In fairness to him, I'll say that he did eventually ship most of what I paid for, and even sent it airmail all the way to Japan. I knew he'd had an accident, but didn't realize how bad it was. Wherever he's gone, I hope he's doing better. > The most upset posters seem to be new members who expect to get new > information about Basia - and we don't have any as there does not > appear to > be any. > So, we frequently talk about other singers and musicians we find > interesting - sometimes similar to Basia and sometimes not. That sometimes > upsets folks, but with the low traffic on this list, it really shouldn't > matter. I'll admit to having been one of those complainers, although I wasn't exactly new to the list. But I mean, come on, weren't a lot of those posts a few years ago about PC vs. Mac or Ford vs. Chevy or something? Oh well, water under the bridge. My current pet peeve is people posting with subject lines like "!!!NEW BASIA CD!!!" leading us to believe there was actually a new release. But the message really only asks if anyone knows WHEN the new CD is due. (Which, of course, tentatively is sometime before the sun uses up all of its fuel and explodes, as far as anyone knows. ...Maybe.) Please! People, you're giving me a heart attack! ;-) As for other artists, guess I'll plug my favorite band again, Dreams Come True. They're Japanese, but have released two English albums in the last couple years. Their Japanese songs are better, but lead vocalist YOSHIDA Miwa sings (and speaks, for that matter) in English with no noticeable accent. Pretty sure Napster or someone has a few of their songs. > Now Larry, you certainly stirred the pot with your no new cd speculation. > Why don't you book some studio time in Memphis, grab some studio > musicians, > Alfred and Dr. Dirk can run down to Biggen Hill and grab our > girl, ship her > to Memphis and you and I can force and album out of her. I appreciate your enthusiasm about/for Peter White, I happen to know him also, and his music speaks for itself. There's no one like him. But he hardly established "smooth jazz" literally by himself. Perhaps treading way too far here LL, though your intentions are well and good. As far as having to be in Basia's shadow, that was his choice as an artist. It's paid off handsomely 4him since '94, Ms. B's last outing. Besides it allows for greater exposure for him to have this artistic association, aside from the fact they all have ties from UK/Europe. I expect in 30 yrs., "artists" will be mainly contributing little bits, notes, and vocal samples. The software and programmers will do the rest. By 2035 or so the AOL-TW Master Computer will re-synth the entire radio inventory daily according to instant sales feedback from the distribution net. Music will evolve at lightning speed toward an "end state" of lowest common denominator canned product. Peter White's music and production of it just fit into the 'format' really, really well, and he's done super well because of it, getting lots of airplay and support. Even though I don't like the 'smooth jazz' thing, it is nice to see a good guy benefit from it. Good for him. I like his older stuff better, myself. :-) - --Leslie Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo!
