I rank it below the doggy jingle bells when it comes to christmas carols. I know I'm gonna hear about this tooo! lol John "Paul S. Hello all, Someone at the yahoo group raised the issue of marketability for the next CD by Basia and Danny (I can only assume that they still work together). When TSI came out, I thought it was the best work they had produced, far and away. TSI remains my favorite Basia CD. However it sold poorly in the US, mostly because (my opinion) it got no airplay. The stations which would have played it were converting to smooth jazz. The US radio environment seems as stratified in 2001 as it was in 1994 when TSI came out. What's changed since then? How might her style have to change in order to accommodate the current market? Any ideas? I can't say anything has really changed since '94 insofar as US jazz/adult-contemporary radio airplay goes (at least not in the Pittsburgh area). For Basia to play to this audience would be easy, she is well remembered and well respected. As long as the producers are good, Basia will have a success. Her style shouldn't have to change at all, I don't believe. Just by coming back Basia will see great placings on the jazz charts as the welcome return of a beloved veteran. I don't see very much likelihood, given the current musical climate in the US, that Basia would have much of a chance at receiving airplay anywhere on FM other than those same stations that wouldn't play her previously. No matter what she does on the album this would be true. So it's probably best for Basia to stick with what she's known for and is best at, albeit with a good contemporary production. Keeping her fanbase ( as well as attracting newcomers to lite-jazz to her own unique sound and style.) Of course this is just my opinion :-) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++ http://community.webtv.net/into_the_arena/Asia Received: from smtpin-101-4.bryant.webtv.net (209.240.198.29) by storefull-611.iap.bryant.webtv.net with WTV-SMTP; Mon, 19 Feb 2001 16:17:58 -0800 (PST) Received: by smtpin-101-4.bryant.webtv.net (WebTV_Postfix) id D14641A9; Mon, 19 Feb 2001 16:17:57 -0800 (PST) Delivered-To: into_the_arena@webtv.net Received: from smoe.org (jane.smoe.org [216.200.102.14]) by smtpin-101-4.bryant.webtv.net (WebTV_Postfix) with ESMTP id E57191E0 for ; Mon, 19 Feb 2001 16:17:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) with SMTP id TAA16609; Mon, 19 Feb 2001 19:13:50 -0500 (EST) Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.10); Mon, 19 Feb 2001 19:13:22 -0500 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id TAA16588 for basia-outgoing; Mon, 19 Feb 2001 19:13:19 -0500 (EST) Received: from hotmail.com (f211.law12.hotmail.com [64.4.19.211]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-jane) with ESMTP id TAA16583 for ; Mon, 19 Feb 2001 19:13:14 -0500 (EST) Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Mon, 19 Feb 2001 16:12:43 -0800 Received: from 24.179.95.161 by lw12fd.law12.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Tue, 20 Feb 2001 00:12:43 GMT X-Originating-IP: [24.179.95.161] From: "Jim C" To: basia@smoe.org Subject: Market Niche? The WORST Christmas song I've ever heard came on a compilation CD, The Stars Come Out For Christmas. It had a song called "Shadrack the Black Reindeer", sung by Loretta Lynn. Shadrack was goofing around, and hid the key to Santa's sleigh, but Santa forgave him because he was the fastest reindeer there was. The song was so filled with god-awful stereotypes that I cringed when I heard it. It must be very old, it's not something you would record today.
