In 1990, while on hiatus from the Sugarcubes, Bjork recorded an Icelandic (mostly) language jazz album called "Gling Glo" that would have been a PERFECT vehicle for a Basia appearance; Basia really could have given what was basically a traditional jazz cd a kick. "Gling Glo" is still a great cd, and this is despite the language barrier; you should check it out if you already haven't. I have an inordinate amount of Bjork's work on cd, including some very rare stuff; let me know if you'd like anything taped. I don't know if you've gotten into Bjork's old ('86-'92) band the Sugarcubes yet, but another 'Cube, Margret Ornolfsdottir, recorded an instrumental cd in 1995 called "Einkalif" that I would imagine any of Basia's more avant-garde oriented fans would love, especially you. I love the Sugarcubes, and have often said that they should reunite, and even if without Bjork Gudmundsdottir, Basia would have made a perfect foil for male vocalist Einar Orn on a track or two. Which is why I find your posts so interesting. From day one I've thought there's more to Basia than Matt Bianco and her solo work has attested to, and I'm hoping she explores a bit more when she returns. A collaboration with Bjork would be fascinating and vital, and would definitely expose her to a completely new and younger audience. It's quite disappointing to me that Basia is overlooked in the US. All of this talk has me thinking - has Basia hurt herself by sticking so closely to Danny? (Leslie is away, so maybe I can get away with saying that.) Most singers with long careers switch arrangers and band leaders several times during their careers. Look at Gloria Estafan for one - she began with the old Miami Sound Machine, went through the Lawrence Dermer and Joe Galdo phase, then Clay Ostwald and Jorge Casas, then Kike Santander, and now back to Lawrence Dermer again. All have taken her through very different musical phases - and she has grown greatly as a singer. Could Basia be helped by something similar? un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2000 05:19:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Jim Clary Subject: Re: Bjork/Basia > >Bjork and Basia have never worked together, but it > would be a > >fascinating proposition. > that.) Thanks for the info regarding Bjork; I was not familiar with this wonderful artist but after listening to some tracks I'm starting to collect CD's. So Bjork's visibility is skyrocketing, it's the right time for them to hook up marketing-wise. And Bjork isn't an 11-year-old pixie prodigy anymore, she's a mature singer and definitely has the experience to work with other divas. Imagine Bjork's Icelandic/English accents with Basia's Polish/? accents in the same song ... ? How bout "New Day", alternating stanzas, just to start? : ) How long does it take to write, record and produce say 2-5 songs, in terms of fulltime effort? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 19:35:46 -0400 From: jp Subject: Re: Bjork/Basia At 10:41 AM 10/8/00 -0700, you wrote: > >How long does it take to write, record and produce say 2-5 >songs, in terms of fulltime effort? > For Basia, it appears to be about 4 years. Inasmuch as she has averaged a CD every four years (thanks for doing the math Juan!), I say she has not worked ENOUGH with Danny. She hasn't worked enough with ANYBODY. Since I hear her daily on Muzak at my store, she must be pulling in enough money that she doesn't have to work. Must be nice............ We've discussed who we would like to see her collaborate with in the future, but since she has really done little solo work, and it has been very good, I think she should stick with Danny. I've seen singers choose the wrong producers and have poor results. Billy Joel used Danny Kortchmar, he of the Carole King/James Taylor era, on his River Of Dreams CD, and I thought it was real disappointing. Even though I play guitar, I would really hate for her to collaborate in any major way with a guitarist - yes, even Peter. I say stick with a winner in Danny and keep doing good work. But do it soon, please................. Jim P. ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V5 #113 ***************************
