It was Miki Howard that did the simultaneous (and rather inferior) remake of the old Aretha Franklin (written by Stevie Wonder) tune. Umberto has done some of the finest re-mixes of the Miami Sound machine and Madonna; most of them are superior to the original. I know I'm gonna need to hop in the asbestos suit for this one, but I think Miki pulled it off better than Basia did. While Basia does a great job with it live, and I always have been a fan of the remixes (they were pretty inventive for the time), the studio, LWNY version makes her sound weak, and the drum machines are obnoxious. Not that I don't like the song, mind you, :) but looking at it from a critical standpoint she could definitely have done much better. But I'd hold the live version up to any other cover of the song in a battle royale. ;) - --Leslie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? And to bring the six degrees back 'round to 360, Emilio Estefan produced parts of the Matt Bianco CD, 'Indigo.' I don't recall that version being too much different from the original. I'll have to listen to it again tonight to be sure, but I think he added another bit of drum-machine and a little reverb effect. Just tweaked it enough to make it slightly better than the album version IMHO. > So perhaps Sony paid some big > bucks to have this guy come in and remix it to HIT > STATUS, but it did not work. They played the video like hell on VH1 at the time, if that's any help (LOL) Now, recall the 'New Day' video where Basia remarks that she wan't altogether happy with the original version (at least, that's what I took her to mean) and said they "completely changed it" by adding "an element of hip-hop." Don't know if she was referring to the 1990 hip-hop-by-way-of-Phil-Harding remix, but they did use the Gatica remix on the video. I knew I knew that name from *somewhere!* - --Leslie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! He regularly works with producers like George Martin (Beatles) etc. If he did a remix, it is FIRST CLASS all the way! You'll have fun exploring Umberto's career - it's a rather fantastic body of work. Regret I won't get your reply until after Feb 24 - I'm off to Paris for an audio conference. Enjoy!
