If only 10% of them weren't all "I'm Missy..." oops "Misty and you stink!" and "Oh no Misty, _you_ stink!" :) I like the EP discussion. I think the music was much more exciting with the vinyl releases... just recently I bought the double 12" of New York City Boy (Pet Shop Boys, if _anyone_ didn't guess) and I love it. EBTG had some nice stuff on 12" singles too... Thank God the period when Michael Jackson or George Michael would release 10 singles from an album with all of them on 7", 12" and CD and tracklisting "1. Song (album version) 2. Song (album version instrumental)" is long gone now. :) That's all about me being retrospective... on a Basia subject, "So Nice" made number 8 on my chart so far. :) (-) Ray - -=[::: come.to\raynavarra ::: www.mp3.com\raynavarra :::::::::::]=- Number one this week: Everything But The Girl "Five Fathoms" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Nov 1999 04:07:35 -0600 From: "Ben Combee" Subject: Roll Call Response Well, I just made the first basia.techwood.org updates in months, so I guess I should reintroduce myself. Name: Ben Combee Age: 25 Location: Austin, Texas Occupation: Lead IA-32 (x86) compiler engineer for CodeWarrior Employer: Metrowerks, a Motorola company Been on List: since 1994... I'm an old-timer! I joined the list shortly before I put up the first version of BasiaWeb. First Basia experience: saw "Time and Tide" video on MTV at 1:30 in the morning in 1988, the summer before I started high school. I became an instant fan. Live experiences: really wanted to go to her 1990 show in Atlant at the Fox Theater, but didn't have a way to get down there. I did catch her 1994 show in Atlanta, however, and it was awesome, save for the rather rude people near me that wouldn't be quiet. I did tape the concert on my walkman with a little clip-on microphone sticking out of the top of my backpack. I really need to MP3 it sometime and get it posted for people. Favorite Basia album: The Sweetest Illusion Favorite Basia song: it varies, but right now I favor "Go For You" Hobbies: public access television (technical advisor and occasional director for The SHow With No Name), video game collecting, science fiction Other favorite music: They Might Be Giants, Everything But the Girl, Ani Difranco, Talking Heads, lots of great Austin bands I've seen live. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Nov 1999 11:39:08 GMT From: "José Torres" Subject: Re: Intiating rollcall sequence... Funny you should mention that. One of the things I've noticed about music in Japan is that a new album is not released until several singles (as many as the label expects to be popular) have already been on sale. This has taken more than a year in some cases since I came here. I have no proof of this, but it seems like "cheating the record buyer into purchasing the same song twice." In a country where young people have tons of disposable income, this policy must be a real money maker. As many of you may have noticed, Japanese CDs are outrageously expensive (CDs by Japanese artists tend to cost even more than foreign artists). If you figure four singles at $10 each and one album (containing all those songs plus a few more) at $30. Well, you can see how profitable this would be. (Thank Kami-sama we can rent CDs here!) In the US, as I recall, the album would usually come out at the same time as or shortly after the first single. - -Brian* ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Nov 1999 08:42:15 -0800 From: Bob & Janine Hester Subject: Re: Roll Call Name: Bob Hester Age: 33, MWM Reside in Portland, OR. She and Ottmar Liebert were playing. I discovered what a true musician really was when I saw her performance. Incredible. Best Songs: They are all great. Though I really enjoy Yearning and Miles Away, Half a minute. Worst Songs: I don't think she has any, though some are better than others. What I Like Best: I like the fact that she sings out front in her music. She does not hide behind a band. The music supports and accompanies her voice, not drown it out. She has enough oomph on her own vocally to rise over the band, as well as not needing backup singers to prop her voice up. Several highly fertile list members, Texan computer nuts, gay disco fans, and a real age split between the 20s' and the 40's (with a few in between for flavor ;) ) That's what I call an ML! - --Leslie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Leslie, you are so sweet to comment on things. I just so enjoy hearing about everyone and even though we are different in many ways there is this "wonderful plush bond" (say that five times fast) that we share that brings the differences together. I read other peoples interest and many times feel I enjoy the same. I enjoy hearing where everyone is from, it brings the world to my world. I had to sing "South of France" and just melted at the imagining of going there. I love to hear from a "lurker". Come on people who have not spoken up. You too Basia. Dreaming.
