It's an instrumental titled "Summer Samba" (Samba de Veraro) and features Wanderly on the Hammond B-3 organ. It was recorded on May 16 and 17, 1966 according to the liner notes on my well scratched album. About a year later, Astrud recorded it with Wanderly as "So Nice." Both versions are on a compilation CD titled "Walter Wanderly Samba Swing" available from the on-line stores. Can I borrow some salt? CHANDLER: (opening the door) Sshh! We're sleeping! RACHEL: Oh, I'm sorry. Now, where's the salt? CHANDLER: Why do you need it? RACHEL: Monica cooked something that can't be eaten without salt. Much, much salt. Actually I hope even she will say it's too salty and then we will be able to throw this thing to the trash. Why are you sleeping at 2 pm? CHANDLER: You wouldn't ask this question if you were here overnight! RACHEL: What happened...? (Joey's room opens) JOEY: (naked) OK honey, I'll be right back! BASIA: (from the inside) With double cheese, if you please! RACHEL: Ewwww! Joey, you're naked! JOEY: Oh God! (closes the door back, staying outside. Realizes, opens the door and jumps inside) [OPENING CREDITS] Scene: Central Perk, everyone but Joey. RACHEL: And then he jumps at me, still naked! MONICA: Ohh! RACHEL: Well, actually he didn't, but I thought it would sound dramatic. And it did. Nevermind! He sleeps with a woman twice his age! MONICA: But it's Basia! She's so incredibly talented... I would even sleep with her! CHANDLER: (stares blankly) MONICA: (realising) Of course, if I was a man. And I said "sleep" not "have sex". (pats Chandler) Oh, grow up, you! JOEY: (enters) Hi guys! JOEY: Actually we were playing strip-poker and she won. ROSS: Yeah, sure, come on, we won't tell anyone you're sleeping with a famous pop star. JOEY: No, really! Actually she was teaching me to sing all night. CHANDLER: Oh! And I kept wondering what are you doing to the poor woman all the time. This is everyone. EVERYONE: Hi! MONICA: (running towards Basia) Oh, I'm such a huge fan of yours. I have all your three albums. You're my favourite singer. BASIA: Actually I recorded five albums. MONICA: Did I say "three"? I mean, I wanted to say five! The first, the last and all you did in between. BASIA: Joey, when are you going to pay me for the singing lessons? JOEY: Oh, eerm, I knew I forgot something. (turns to everyone) Actually I met Basia here and we played some poker, and we bet that she'd spent a night with me if I won, and I have, but then, we decided that she'll teach me singing for free instead, and then we bet that I would pay if she won and she did. BASIA: OK, Joey, it's a long story, that doesn't need further telling, just pay and I will go. JOEY: And then we bet that if I won, she would... BASIA: OK, Joey, that's enough, look, stop telling the story and you won't have to pay. PHOEBE: Sorry, are you a kind of, eerm, singer? BASIA: Yes, I am. Your description of the Astrud '66 version is right on target. Faf was kind enough to Email me a *.wav copy of the Astrud 1966 version (first half; wav files are HUGE). I converted that wav file to mp3, which reduced the file size by about 70%. If anyone would like the first half of the Astrud version in an mp3, I can Email it. Both the '66 and '99 versions sound good to me. That Hammond organ is certainly predominant in Astrud '66. Astrud '66 moves at a slower pace, pleasing and laid-back, a typical Astrud Gilberto song for that era. It sounds kinda like a zip from the flip side of "Girl from Ipanema".Taro/Basia '99 is way faster-paced and more upbeat, very *happy*. I'm going to see if I can find that Gilberto-Wamberly '66 album at CDNow or Best Buy. Faf's Email made one comment which I would like to quote; this is a precise description of Basia's style, IMHO: "> Basia is a successful combination between fire (Latin) and ice (Slav)!!!" That pretty much sums it up for me. Thanks Faf!! Okay, you have caused me to do two things: one, die laughing at work and two, to consider a survey/roll call since all we seem to be talking about is complete crap. I made a valiant attempt a few days ago with the Carleen Anderson post and I get answered with some bizarro weather forcasting. Oy! And I don't even want to think about Basia and Joey even in the same room cause it makes me feel kinda scared. Big OOPS! Sorry Jan, for mistaking you for a man. Now I can think of situations where that would be even more embarrassing, but this is not the place... Anyway, I should have known Jan was a girl's name, as it tends to be in the English-speaking part of the world. Here in Holland, it's a very common man's name (note that I'm not saying "boy's name"; 'Jan' is regarded a little old-fashioned, so parents tend to think twice before naming their boy child 'Jan' these days...). And incidentally, Janine is a very pretty name too.
