Not trying to be sour grapes or anything, but I was beginning to think I was on the Peter White Fan Club Recruitment ML. My email today deals with *Basia.* Ha! Well, in a roundabout way. ;) Remember in 'The Sweetest Interview" when Basia rhapsodizes on the wonder that is Carleen Anderson? You know, some things in TSI being 'very inspired by her?' Well, lo and behold in the friendly neighborhood cut-out bin I scored a copy of her CD from 1994, 'True Spirit.' Now I understand what Basia was talking about. Wow. Why this woman isn't a huge star is beyond me. Her voice is massive- that's the only way I can think to describe it- everything from opera range to very deep tones. The songs are pretty well written and are darn good R&B with a little 'quiet storm' component for good measure. I can't think of who to compare her to; one song sounds like Anita Baker a bit but that comparison isn't quite accurate. She is also the new lead singer for Brand New Heavies (replacing Siedah Garrett, thank God) so maybe she'll get more exposure. But I must say that if you find this CD, get it. Trust me. As for the TSI connnection, there is no real moment when I could tell what Basia copped (unlike Sting, which is a whole 'nother story). She was inspired maybe in the way that she stretched her voice a bit. So, to sum up, Basia is right, Carleen is the shiznit. Jury's still out on Catatonia, however. - --Leslie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I did a little surfing and found a web site containing her biography and several sample tracks from '94 "True Spirit". Verrry interesting biography, which will help you understand her style. Be sure to check out the sample RealPlayer tracks. Here is the link: http://www.imusic.interserv.com/showcase/urban/carleen.html I also came across a UK site containing a critique of her 1998 CD "Blessed Burden". This site also has several sample RealPlayer tracks. http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cubbie.hole/ANDERSON/BLESSED.HTM I'd say that the vocalizations in these CDs did remind me of Anita Baker, also Chaka Khan. > > Jury's still out on Catatonia, however. > Guess I'll have to look back a little. Catatonia doesn't ring a bell in my poor tired head. Jim Clary jclary@fastlane.net ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V4 #211 ***************************
