It is a wonderfully upbeat and positive song with some of the most incredibly lush harmonies that I have ever heard, especially, "...I know there's a lesson in every false hope, next time I might get it riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight." <----voted best harmony ever! The song obviously deals with relationships, hers, however I apply it to all aspects of my life. To me it's don't ever give up. It's one of the interviews Ray translated from Polish radio, done in 1997 I believe. To sum up roughly: the first guy was back in Poland, the second was an Englishman who persuaded her to go to the West. - --Leslie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You're welcome, but let me say that I don't want to presume that's what the reference is. Materialism - give up all material possessions and wander the landscape, I'm guessing you're right on that one, Jim. Guy #2 seems to fit Leslie's Nietsche-reading, clove-cigarette-smoking, hyper-intellectual, beatnik wannabe -- not Basia's type at all! I don't think he had suicide in mind (those intellectual types are too cowardly for actual suicide); perhaps just forsaking all material things and living on love. Basia's response: hell no, dude! I LIKE my house in England! >I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say >because it's such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is >attractive, but I have photographs of her. That is hysterical! Point well taken. (I forgot who said this, but it's very funny.) Leslie takes a stab at my Mac specs: >Maybe the stuff we're talking about may be too geared >for OS 8.1 or 5 to work with your OS. I'm guessing it >ain't in the 8's, considering the memory you would >need. Not so, Ms. G3, I'm on 8.1 with 72mb of RAM (I know -- that seems puny by today's standards!). Any more suggestions? I'm desperate! This is fun -- the list is getting chatty again! meg ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 17:56:04 -0500 From: "Jim Clary" Subject: Re: Third Time Lucky Those interviews provide a lot of insight and are well worth reading. I learned from reading them how tough the recording business really is. Usually when recording a CD, the *artist* has to pay for all studio time, which is quite expensive. During one interview, the numbers quoted *per day* for a good London studio were 1,000UKP ($1,650), or 1,500UKP ($2,470) for digital recording. This can run up a lot of debt very quickly, which is probably why artists go on CD promotional tours - to pay off the debt, and hopefully make a some bucks for themselves in the process. Also, my understanding is that the artist receives a few cents royalty for each CD sold. The only artists who do not have to pay up front for recording time are those considered "superstar status". I'm not in the music business, so anyone feel free to correct any errors. The interviews can be found at http://basia.techwood.org/ under "Interesting Messages from the Mailing List". I was originally turned on to Basia by a Dallas radio station called "The Oasis". When they first played a couple of songs from T&T, I was hooked. The station used to play several songs from T&T, and still does occasionally. LWNY was also played when it came out. However, when TSI became available, the station ignored it, which I found very strange since they were still playing songs from the previous CD's. It was as if the station had decided in advance to ignore TSI for some reason. The TSI freeze occurred in Dallas, where I live, and I don't travel much so the situation might have been entirely different at stations in other US cities. Any ideas or feedback? Pardon if this subject has already been discussed. It has anything and everything one could desire from a song - catchy melody, fine vocal performance, intelligent lyrics, and clever arrangement. It is certainly too sophisticated for any form of radio :) Also, I know that some of us on this list are musicians or play instruments (Richard, you started this!), and this song has some of the best music I have ever seen. If I could ever come up with one song this good I would retire! Third Time Lucky FOREVER!! I remember nearly crying aloud after the first time I heard the horn echo-soli of the piano solo (I was there, it was heaven). At the end of the night I told Danny I was going to steal the ending riff of the solo. He forgave me. But don't get me started on my Basia close-encounter stories. - -- Jeff Abrams doctorpc@erols.com 1993 Brilliant Black GS I have six locks on my door all in a row.
