The second song on TSI is titled 'Third Time Lucky'. I am intrigued by the following section: "later I met a boy whose inner life was his true passion we did connect in an exploratory fashion he claimed what ties us to this mortal coil we should sever could i ever live up to his dreams or would i like to play a part in his scheme? oh i fear not..." Not quite sure how to interpret this, in particular the central "mortal coil" line. Some possibilities which have come to mind are: 1. Materialism - give up all material possessions and wander the landscape, e.g. "Holy Men" of India? 2. Suicide pact? 3. Rapture? Anyone know? I have looked around a good bit and cannot find any references. Any and all comments are welcome. Okay, okay, I'm sorry. I screwed it up! I guess I don't look at the liner notes so much. Maybe the stuff we're talking about may be too geared for OS 8.1 or 5 to work with your OS. I'm guessing it ain't in the 8's, considering the memory you would need. I just don't know, though. > You mean the colors of an iMac, Leslie? Actually my bee-utiful G3. It's a loud mofo and it frightens my non-computer family when it starts up. I have to explain that, yes, it's normal for the computer to suddenly, robotically spout Basia lyrics when certain windows pop up. Or that you need to click on Anakin Skywalker's head to get to Illustrator, hit Dave Lister to access AOL, and click on the guy with the 'H' on his forehead ;) to be able to start dinking with photos. - --Leslie, ...happier, more productive __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Ye see, 'TTL" is one of my absolute favorite Basia lyric ever. I like the outlook that while one may keep looking for life's joys, the journey to them is just fine to take. Even if you screw up a little. Remember the Ally McBeal episode when Tracey Ullman told Ally to find a personal theme song? Okay, the idea was very weird, but I understood a little of it, considering that TTL was constantly in my mind this past year when I was wrapping up my degree work, getting freaked out about becoming a grownup, going on all the interviews and feeling like a mattress salesman... the one verse (or maybe it would be a bridge) kept repeating itself: "I have my plans and brave ambitions Knowing no bounds or inhibitions I know there's a lesson in every fall So next time I'll get closer" I liked that so much that I took off on that idea with the goofy graduation invite I sent to my friends, because it summmed up my mission, really. Even when it was getting less and less encouraging, well, the next time I might get it right. Obviously, Basia was talking about relationships, but I think the idea holds true for anything: keep looking until you find 'it,' whatever 'it' is. Simple idea, but we all know how many people don't do that. And for relationships, too, it makes damn good advice. So the weird verse. Well, another element of the song I have always loved is its humor. Basia is making fun of her own love life! I could relate to some of her implied experiences (I say implied 'cause this is all in my own head at this point). To me, Guy #1 was this yuppie sort that thought he was soooo smart and expected a trophy of sorts (living up to his dreams etc etc) Guy #2 is this *deep* existensialist kinda guy who would read Nietsche before bed and smoke clove cigarettes while discussing his favorite topic-himself. I too thought of some idea where "our love goes beyond mere matter, take me to the other side!" kinda thing, which made me laugh (and explains the emphatic, kinda freaked out sounding, "Oh, I fear not!") But the idea of the Tao makes more sense, and if that is the meaning, then it was worked into the lyric very cleverly. Might I add that Basia's actual meaning, to my knowledge, has never been stated. And you all know what an archivist I am. But I can guess that it is a reference to Kevin Robinson being the 'lucky' guy (ha ha ha) making the other two, well, the other two. Note to that Basia has been married- and divorced -twice. - --Leslie, preparing to become an 'uncarved block' now. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LOL!! I agree that Guy#2 being hung up on Taoism/mysticism (and himself) sounds likely. Also, the descripion of Guy#1 (yuppie) looks to be right on the money. Beautiful song, one of my alltime favorites. Listening to TTL once is never enough; playing it three times is about right. Thanks Leslie and Jeff!!
