Sort of a fun thing really. I am pretty convinced that we are the only Basia fan club in the world that talks about her band and all the cool songs and shows we have seen and so forth. Day after day, year after year. Let's face it, she is a great when it comes to making music. I propose that the Basia Digest members elect a Basia Fan Club President. The term would be 2 months. The president would have no real responsibilities other than just being the President. Perhaps he or she could greet new list subscribers?? (I am making this up as I go along here so bear with me.) Nominations for President will be submitted to the list subscribers with or without the permision of the Nominee. Campainging would occur upto the first Monay of every other month with voting occuring the following day. Am I being too American here? Picture yourself saying "I am the President of the Basia International Fan Club" or maybe "Basia, I can't believe I am meeting you!! I am the President of your International Fan Club" It could be anyone of you out there! No, Really. Now let us say that for example Leslie gets excited and nominates herself for President and lets say that Ashoke nominates Meg for President. So we have Meg Vs. Leslie for the January thru March Presidential office. The voters, on Tuesday cast their vote to an independent e-mail address for the tally. the following day we have a new president. What am I missing here?? somebody out there give me some feedback. Obviously, our hero didn't make it, but some of those that did I didn't quite understand. At the risk of sounding musically naive, who are Exene Cervenka, Mahalia Jackson, Big Momma Thornton, Nico, Kim Gordon, Lucinda Williams, Kim Deal, and Tina Weymouth? And say what you will about them, but Celine Dion and Mariah Carey didn't even make the list. My friends and I have had fun discussing how the women really should be ranked. Anyone care to bat this one around for awhile? And as far as Basia not making the list, all I can say is that if Yoko Ono, whose main and only talent was marrying smart, was #84, then it is a crime that Basia was omitted. Anyone care to bat this one around for awhile? Nico: singer for the Velvet Underground, Lou Reed's band that played in Andy Warhol's Factory Kim Gordon: singer and guitarist for Sonic Youth, one of the most influential punk/rock bands of the 80's Lucinda Williams: very talented songwriter in the alt-country/folk rock genre Kim Deal: former lead of the Pixies with Black Francis, later led the Breeders who hit it big in the early to mid 1990's. Tina Weymouth: keyboardist and singer for the Talking Heads and co-lead of the Tom Tom Club (a dance music collaboration with fellow Heads member and husband Jerry Harrison) I'm not familiar with the other three. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Aug 1999 00:23:31 -0700 From: Denis Naranjo Subject: Re: digital fanzine An absurd idea at this time. Why can't you wait until her recording/performing career picks up and resumes. Is there really enough of an agenda out there to drive such an administrative online project? Your notion that Basia is a jazz singer is rather painful. Do you know what a jazz singer is? Are you aware of the history of vocal jazz in America? Basia has, to a degree, been perhaps been "influenced" by jazz singers of one import or another. But she's not a jazz singer; at heart, she's a crossover pop singer. If you want to hear lady jazz singers listen to Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington, Ella, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Helen Forrest, June Christy, Chris Connor, Cleo Laine, Mildred Bailey, or somebody of their caliber and tradition. Thank God Basia didn't get slammed into any Best of Rock countdown either. Let's enjoy her talent and disregard categorizations, esp. when we all agree there are few natural singing voices like hers. She's an artist, so crave her creativity.
