Yes, and even more interesting is that she does it in a second language. She must be very intelligent - a few years ago on this list we guessed her height - any guesses now about her IQ? And Ernst-Jan - your english is fine. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 06:26:18 -0400 From: jp Subject: Re: Sergio Mendes At 12:41 AM 6/24/99 EDT, you wrote: > Of >course, Sergio's band was the classic "jazz combo", back in the 60's when >"only jazz musicians, were smoking marijuana". "I have a PBS mind in an MTV world." I don't think it's an MTV world anymore - more like mp3 world now. The best Sergio Mendes was Brazil '65 - better musicians on the album. By Brazil '66 he was seeking a more commercial sound. He could be an influence, but Basia credits Astrud Gilberto, who sang with bossa nova creators Joao Gilberto and Tom Jobim. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 07:39:12 EDT From: Gorskiceap@aol.com Subject: Re: Watch out, a newbie/Basia Origins Yes! I was at her appearance in here in Buffalo that year. If (and when) the next one happens, maybe we can get together in one city or the other for the concert. I know at least two of us (on this list) from Buffalo will be there! I know that other bands have fan clubs that get together for shows. From what I gather, she has never visited Toronto. Though, from what I recall, she didn't do Half A Minute or Dzien Sie Budzi. There was plenty of merchandise available, but I couldn't afford any at the time. The show was probably close to three hours, but that included Spyro Gyra opening for her. Peter White did a solo (sort of) of Promenade. On the other hand, she got together most of the road crew, I think, for help with the chorus of Yearning. The wardrobe selection was stunning. I remember thinking at the time she could easily have been a model. She looked outstanding! I don't remember too many other details. It's been, what, almost 5 years? My God, we HAVE been waiting a long time! However, I have a question... Does anyone out there know of any other artists and or groups that have music similar to that of Basia? I am curious... Can anyone help? Regards, Maverick" Hi, I'm Tom Basia is very unique in her sound, but I'd say Black Sabbath's 3rd album is close and then there is the Resident's "Great American composers series" John Phillip Sousa or perhaps Led Zeppelin II! Just kidding. The Sergio Mendes sound has been on my turntable forever. That is close in a primative way, they also did Brazil '77 which has one of the best squeak-sounds I have ever heard on a record. I do not know if they released '88 and I have heard the talk of a Sergio Mendes and Brazil '99, but never looked, Anyone? I think Basia and the boys should cover "O-pato" Goodbye, Tom At this very moment I am listening to Joni Mitchell's Ladies of the Canyon for the first time. Damn she is good. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 20:40:43 EDT From: SHOEMAN99@aol.com Subject: Re: Favorite Basia CD is there any way to get a concert schedule for Basia? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 23:14:35 -0400 From: Jeff Hamilton Subject: favors (well, just one - no need for me to pluralize it) About 10 months ago, shortly after Ashoke began posting his "Copernican Chronicles", someone (my memory tells me is was either Juan or Joe, or someone (other than me!) whose name began with the letter J) posted a message, the subject of which was "My own little chronicle".
