Sorry to keep banging on about this, but I didn't mean Ben's site (which I knew about, and its great) but the original mp3 site at http://www.sli.uio.no/basia/ which seems to have disappeared. If you recall we had to enter a username and password to get into it. There was a great version of TTL on there and some other tracks which Ben's site doesn't have **sob** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 13:04:23 EST From: JEFREGNIER@aol.com Subject: Sacrilegious !!! Hi ! I have recently joined Basia's list. I live in France (excuse me for my english...) and I think Basia must to be known much more than nowadays in my country. Beautifull voice, diamond voice, that goes from lower to higher, from ice to fire, from east (Dzien sie budzi) to south (Astrud) and both (Copernicus). Much more than Celine Dion, a great interpreter, Basia is a full vocalist (and by the way musician) and she writes lyrics. A complete artist. I've been lately disappointed because a french female singer, called Sandy Valentino, made a pale cover of "Copernicus" called "Pourquoi" (why). Same music but this "artist" (???) pretends she was the first who composed it. Sacrilegious !!!. I feel cheated !!!. This an injustice when you know the care and the time that take Basia and...Danny to compose and arrange (see "An Olive tree"). However, I don't mind. We, all the fans, know where talent is. Can someone tell me where I could find the titles "Traditionnal Polish Sambas" and the vinyl singles "Me and Mr Sanchez" and "Haunted Cocktails". Regards Jeff. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 12:21:20 PST From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: Re: Waters of March >Hello everybody! Hey Tim! Welcome! :) > I have been a recent convert of Basia. I >fell in love with her music after picking up a $5 promo CD of her "Clear >Horizons." Her music is so captivating after which I bought "The Sweetest >Illusion," "London Warsaw New York" and "Basia on Broadway." Wow! You know that you have restored my faith in the record-buying public by doing this! >Has Basia had any charting hits before? What is she currently doing right >now? Is she touring or recording a new CD? Well! Where to begin... before I go on my (characteristic, Tim) tangent here, might I suggest that you check out the archives of the list at http://www.smoe.org/lists/basia because there's some mighty fine reading there. Some pretty knowledgable fanfolks have come and gone and left behind some fascinating stuff. Also there are some kick-butt interviews at http://basia.techwood.org you will definitely dig. Our resident translator/hero Ray found some great stuff in the Polish press that just may answer some questions. Basia's life is pretty damn interesting and you will learn that (and this is my opinion here, but I'm sure most of you out there will agree) the personal element is very important in Basia's work. Granted, they are great songs in and of themselves, but the background on each gives them a whole new meaning. These aren't just randomly written words, see. I mean, Crusing For Bruising sounds so, I don't know, simple until you find out that the lyrics refer to the end of her relationship with Danny White. Or that Rachel is a real person. Or that the reason Kevin Robinson sings the 'answer' part on Yearning on the live album is because he's the guy Basia's singing about. Whoo! So you see, there's a lot to talk about. The cool thing is that this personal stuff is so voluntarily given! She opens up to her audience, and we love her for it. Anyway- charts. I don't have the exact numbers here, but two songs charted on Billboard: Time & Tide was around 25 or so to the best of my memory on the singles chart, but the album was I believe #1 on the Contemporary Jazz chart at one point (if not, it was pretty darn close.) Cruising For Bruising was in the top 20 on the singles chart, as was London Warsaw New York on the album chart (I think it got as far as #11! Of course all my info on this isn't here!) There have been other songs on other charts- for example, New Day for You was #1 on the Radio & Records Adult Contemporary chart! Weird. I also remember reading that Promises had gone somewhere too. Sadly, nothing happened with the other albums. The Sweetest Illusion was about #27 on the album chart, but if I remember correctly no single charted. Boo. However, the myriad remixes of 'Drunk on Love' reached #1 on the club-play dance singles chart! Basia on Broadway and so far Clear Horizon failed to do squat. Boo. We on the list have many theories as to why this is so. Please anyone correct me cause my memory is sure to falter somewhere in there. :) What now? Well, according to the interviews Ray translated she and Danny have an album to be released this year! One blessing of you being a new convert is that you didn't have to wait 5 years like most of us! Lamenting the constant repackaging all the way. There's no date yet, but believe me we are looking. :) Also, Basia is set to guest on Spyro Gyra saxophonist Jay Beckenstein's upcoming solo album. The latest word on that is later this year. The most frustrating thing about Basia is she rarely records or tours. She really enjoys her private life and doesn't seem to care for the madness of touring et al. And if you want my opinion, all indicators are that the two of them are perfectionists. Danny has been called a workoholic by Basia, and Basia herself has said she spends hours a day working on songs. Yet they don't put out an album for 5 years! That just screams retentive to me. :) >I would love to hear from any Basia fans esp. your opinions on "Brave New >Hope" and "Time and Tide" Cd's. What do you think of them and should I get >them? Get anything Basia looks at, if you want my opinion (LOL!) Seriously, they are definitely worth buying. T&T (we're big on acronyms here) is great and a must have. It's funny now because of the '80's vibe but it's one helluva album. Also, Brave New Hope is fun but not as vital. Its a collection of LWNY B-sides, two songs from T&T that we didn't get in the States, and some remixes. It's pretty cool in my opinion but it's not for everyone. ('specially 'Give Me That', right Brian! ) Alrighty then! Time for me to hand over the mike to someone else. Have fun, Timothy! - --Leslie (Hotmail trashed everything in my folders! Grrrr!) Beautifull voice, diamond voice, >that goes from lower to higher, from ice to fire, from east (Dzien sie budzi) >to south (Astrud) and both (Copernicus). Wow. Well put! :) Don't worry about your English, there are plenty of folks from other places on this list. Much more than Celine Dion, a great >interpreter, Basia is a full vocalist (and by the way musician) and she writes >lyrics. A complete artist. Hee! You missed our Celine Dion debate a few months ago. Some were for her, but most were against. Anyway... >I've been lately disappointed because a french female singer, called Sandy >Valentino, made a pale cover of "Copernicus" called "Pourquoi" (why). Same >music but this "artist" (???) pretends she was the first who composed it. Whoa! This an injustice when you know the care >and the time that take Basia and...Danny to compose and arrange (see "An Olive >tree"). Olive Tree is such a complex song it took 3 incredibly talented musicians to write it! Anyway, I understand how you feel. The same feeling hits me whenever I hear that girl from Will Smith's old TV show sing 'Boy You Knock Me Out." Talk about minimal songwriting and maximal (no, not the Transformers! LOL) ripping off. I think that maybe someone may have written the vocal line independently (which isn't sayinbg much considering how simple it is) but otherwise, "let's take the background of Kool & The Gang's 'Summer Madness' and the horn section from Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' and make a song out of them!" Grrr..... especially since I love that old Bobby Caldwell song. Okay, end of tirade. :) >However, I don't mind. >We, all the fans, know where talent is. Damn straight, brutha! >Can someone tell me where I could find the titles "Traditionnal Polish Sambas" >and the vinyl singles "Me and Mr Sanchez" and "Haunted Cocktails". >Regards Maybe Kevin knows where to get the first one. ;) As for the others- Me and Mr. Sanchez is on the Polish Sambas CD but as far as the vinyl of both- just gotta dig :) By the way, have you heard 'Departures?' I have to ask.... :) Leslie Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 13:01:23 PST From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: A little amendment to the last post... I should really have made the distinction that the chart information I cited was from the US only. It's been said that in simple chart terms, she has had far greater success in Japan, and far less in the UK. But that requires info from people who know, and I do not. :) I do remember a Japan album chart in which TSI was at #6 or so, and she was quite visible on the airplay charts for (big Japanese radio station) J-Wave. - --Leslie Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 22:31:08 -0600 From: "Ileana Mowbrey" Subject: Re: Basia clips Please erase me from your list.
