Talukdar" Subject: THE COPERNICAN CHRONICLES: We circle the globe... Hey gang! Yes I am back in Cleveland, as Joanna pointed out!! It's a bit cold but I am glad to be home. And Robin was right too - I WAS writing a Chronicle. First of all, I have to apologize for being incognito this past week. Unfortunately, the new job kinda overwhelmed my first week. But I love it. I skipped the orientation and initial time wasting and jumped in both feet (and hands) into it. Meg will vouch for this, because even my normal daily e-mails to her were disrupted. :-D The essay below is best described as "Yearning Revisited". It's somewhat strange that there were several moments on my trip to California, when I intensely missed my home. This trip is by the far the most touristy thing I have done in a LONG time. This is I guess the rediscovery that I so admire in Basia's lyrics which stayed with me pretty consistently - they are not necessarily profound and erudite, but they are simple, identifiable and poignant - a telling of the tales of our daily lives. ________________________________________________________________ "But for this simple case of longing what are we to do when left homeless in our hearts" I was not looking forward to my time in San Diego. For once, I wanted to get away from everything that would remind me of work and school. And here I was headed for 70 degree weather and sunshine to wear a suit and attend a conference. This feeling changed the moment I woke up the next morning and walked out on to the balcony of my hotel room, in a T-shirt and boxers, and smelt the warm air of the ocean! I thought of the smells that we in the midwest are so fond of - particularly the smell that heralds the approach of spring. It's a damp, musty kind of smell, that tells you that the thaw is on the way. But the smell of the ocean is different. It's mysterious, welcoming, comforting, but somewhat unspectacular in its persistence, all at the same time. The sunshine was intense and I knew that I would like San Diego, which I did. Indeed, if I were to ever move to CA, this would be the top in the list of cities. I got to spend some time at the beach and have some of the best Italian food ever, in Hillcrest. Friday morning, waking up in West Hills, in the San Fernando valley, was not much of a visual change - the colors were somewhat similar - but the smells were different. By this time of the year, this area receives about 12 inches of rain. This year, it's only been 4 inches so far. You could not smell the ocean anymore - but the dryness of the earth made for an anachronistic smell for my now-midwestern nose. This was the more familiar smell of the earth that I would expect in the middle of late or even fall. And walking out into the backyard of Carl's house could have been anywhere in Shaker Heights. As I sat down on a lawn chair and opened the paper, I watched the sun. It was 7:00 am and I missed my kitties dreadfully. ****************** "Wherever we go, God, we're trying so hard to make everything seem like home left behind" Packing for the trip to San Francisco was a frenzy. We planned on the longer, prettier PCH on the way up and the quicker, blander I5 on the way back. The house was a mess of toothbrushes, clothes, socks, shoes, maps, cell phones and travel paraphernalia. The creature comforts we enjoy at home travel less economically than we do, but we are bound to them as inextricably as we are to the air that we breathe. There is something about the pacific coast that can only be felt when one is there. You might hear things said about it, and read accounts of travels, but there are several aspects of that experience that cannot be put into words and pictures. Perhaps this is because there is so much more to the Southern California coastline than just sight and sounds. As we winded down the PCH, between breathtaking views of the coastline, my attention was infrequently fixated on large boulders jutting out from the sections of the hills over us, where a previous landlide had left the landscape smoothe, but for these boulders. A single motion of the earth and we could be crushed under them like an empty egg-shell. These visions were blending seemlessly with the colors of midwestern summer. There is much peace to be found in the sombre greenness of the highlands and parks. I could not help being transported to the Euclid Creek Reservations here in Cleveland, where I have spent many a summer afternoon, atop a boulder jutting out over the creek, watching the miniscule little people, threading their way along the banks below. Back in LA, I enjoyed a moment of utter ecstacy when, at the Virgin Records megastore, I chanced upon a Japanese import version of Basia's Best Remixes. I have to disagree with a comment I read some time ago about the street version of "Baby You're Mine" - I LOVE it. How else would you be able to figure out those beautiful guitar parts (which I cannot play!)? I couldn't wait to listen to them on my way to work on Monday. But wait - wrong Monday. THAT Monday was still a week away! ******************* "We circle the globe, go native, go far But it's not a country a town, not a house" As I neared the end of my vacation, the pangs of home were only a bit more frequent. Nothing bad, just a comforting thought of home popping up every now and then. There was this interesting duality of some internal argument that wanted to prolong the stay, against a voice that kept bringing up visions of a couch, sounds of contented purring and the familiar smells of coffee in the morning that I know and love. Both San Francisco and West Hollywood were exhilarating, but exhausting, and in different ways. There is too much activity and everyone is breathless from trying to fit everything into a little tiny sachet of time. The individual tones that would offer brilliant views of the richness of their contributing cultures, all blend into a busy canvas and you have to strain your eyes to see how everything make sense. The foggy glimpse of the Alcatraz from the Golden Gate bridge also makes you strain your eyes, but somehow that is aptly reflective of its sinister past, and helps tell the tale of its place in our world with more clarity than all the colors and sounds of West Hollywood ever could. But the impatient heart of it all beats on and gives one the aerobics necessary to jolt the senses back into motion. The sun, smoke and the heathaze on Santa Monica Boulevard was the invasive surgery needed to remedy whatever might have been wrong internally. It was sharp, messy and corrective. I escaped back into the valley, which offered the senses some reminders of home. This was post-operative recuperation. ***************** Perhaps it all came together in Santa Barbara, where I was flying out of. The quiet, placate seaside town is conducive to moments of introspection. The smell of fish as I walked towards the dock was intense, but it came in brief patches, intertwined with the sun-drenched smell of the coast. And there was a different kind of comfort here that I was growing to love too. My travels were over and I was looking forward to home and my babies. Perhaps a little lesson learnt was that such journeys are not really about discovering new worlds. Perhaps they are opportunitues to revisit the joys of home instead. There was uncanny similarity between the yearning I felt then and that which I feel at the end of each day as I head home. Those small and disjoint memories of different days, make home what it is and it takes being away from them sometimes, to realize their worth. So perhaps, there is some use to distant travel after all... Regards, Ashoke. ________________________________________________________________ Ashoke S.
