Unfortunately, "Clear Horizon" just isn't such a great song. That wouldn't be a problem if Celine Dion were singing it, but our Basia is basically a nobody, even in Japan, where she was supposedly so much more popular than in the States. When people ask me who my favorite singer is and I say, "Basia," they're always like, "WHO?!" (Actually, they say, "DARE?!" because I'm in Japan and they speak Japanese here, you know.) I like the song, myself, but then it would be difficult for Basia to write something I didn't like. Nevertheless.... >1) Prime Time TV. Sounds lke a promo for ABCs fall lineup circa 1988. >So, so dumb! The horns save it- barely- but still, UGH! Well, I like "Prime Time TV." However, you're right about the horns. The horns and the harmonies are what I like most about it. But let's be honest, (Pardon me while I slip into my asbestos PJs.) the lyrics for most the songs on Time and Tide were not exactly brilliant. That doesn't necessarily make them any less enjoyable. Some of my favorite songs are from that album. >2) The Prayer of a Happy Housewife. Oh, man, pile on the gooiness. Once >again, horns are great, but how cheesy and way, way over the top in >sentimentality. TSI should've had 10 songs, period. It's not a song I'd pick out to listen to by itself, but after listening to the other 10 songs, it's kind of comforting. My major gripe is the title. Ugh! So much for Political Correctness, eh? >3) Give Me That. "There is no one I would rather...uhh!" Nuff said. I >think this was one of the songs she wrote when she wasn't >speaking/writing English too well. BINGO! Man, I hated that song so much, I only listened to it once. I can't even remember the line you're quoting, but I'm sure it's terrible. And to think, that was one of the two songs I bought the second release of the Brave New Hope EP for! >4) Best Friends. It's not the lyric I have a problem with, it's the >pseudo-Estafanisms. And what is with that haunted house keyboard riff? Again, one of the few Basia songs I just can't listen to. Are you referring to the riff at the beginning of the song? Ugh! Yeah, it's terrible. I can't believe Danny White actually played that. And it IS the lyric I have a problem with. It just seems so forced, unnatural, cumbersome. Okay, my turn. Aside from those already mentioned... "Angels Blush." Wow! Talk about gooey! This song just drips in it! I had to stop listening to it, because my teeth started falling out. Also, it's an angel song, so.... >Brother I feel you pain, as I too went remix-mad. Only difference is >that if I ever found the original Brave New Hope I'd freak out. I've >always regretted not buying it waaaay back when I was 13! 13?! Unusual taste in music for someone that age. But then, people used to say the same thing about me because I listened to jazz in high school. Anyway, if you have the new BNH, you're not missing anything. However, the old one didn't have "Give Me That," which may make it more valuable to some of us. ;-) - -Brian* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 06:20:40 -0500 From: jp Subject: Re: Prime Time TV >It's time for the new season at Fox, and their creative geniuses have come up >with this commercial................... > MUSIC SCORE SCENES > >"Where there's a hero, \ characters from Melrose Place > You'll find a villain....." / > >Fade out.............................. > >(Jim P., who's been watching WAY too much TV.....) > And as someone who worked for FOX for many years, I'm glad you watched the right channel. I'm suprised to hear that! I mean, TSI was in the top 10 there, at least #6 I think! Wow, bummer. When people ask me who my favorite singer is and I say, "Basia," >they're always like, "WHO?!" As in the United States.... gee, if it were 1990 I wonder if that would be thae case... I like the song, myself, but >then it would be >difficult for Basia to write something I didn't like. Nevertheless.... I'm with you there. good for us, but it ain't that great overall. But let's be honest, >(Pardon me while I slip into my asbestos PJs.) the lyrics for most the songs >on Time and Tide were not exactly brilliant. Yeah, some of them made you kinda wonder. Like Promises, that song makes little sense to me, but it works well with the music. Like you said: That doesn't necessarily make >them any less enjoyable. Some of my favorite songs are from that album. As are some of mine. :) But the truth is, now I think she can kick the pants off a lot of native-speaking-English songwriters when she's at her best (for example, a lot of TSI- wow) (not Clear Horizon tho') > My major gripe is the title. >Ugh! So much for Political Correctness, eh? I was really, really glad to hear it was about her sister instead of her just because the sentiment-and words- were so sappy. Nice horns tho'! >BINGO! Man, I hated that song so much, I only listened to it once. I can't >even remember the line you're quoting, but I'm sure it's terrible. And to >think, that was one of the two songs I bought the second release of the >Brave New Hope EP for! Luckily Forgive and Forget redeemed that. (for me, anyway) Well, at least it's obvious why it was left off the US release! >Again, one of the few Basia songs I just can't listen to. Are you referring >to the riff at the beginning of the song? Ugh! Yeah, it's terrible. Actually, in the middle. but, yeah, that sucks too. I can't >believe Danny White actually played that. One good thing Danny White did was get rid of the '80's synth madness he seemed to contract beginning with Matt Bianco. Time and Tide was excusable since it was recorded in '86, but with LWNY some of it was a bit much. Actually, only Best Friends was a bit much. Okay, so I can't decide. But the new wave synth thing had to die. >Okay, my turn. Aside from those already mentioned... "Angels Blush." Wow! >Talk about gooey! This song just drips in it! I had to stop listening to it, >because my teeth started falling out. Also, it's an angel song, so.... I was gonna ask you about that... Does 'Not an Angel' give bad vibes too? Sorry... I'm emabrassed to admit this but I like Angels Blush. It's so, well, nice. The words dont completely make sense, but other than that it's OK with me. Love the horns (gotta love overdubbing- 2 guys for what, 6 horns?) >13?! Unusual taste in music for someone that age. Tell me about it. i was a weird kid. I was a huge Rippingtons fan too (they suck now though) and Pat Metheny was my other idol, apart frorm Basia. Basically I had the musical taste of someone 3 times my age. Now I can't stand a lot of that stuff. A few guys I still like a lot- Pat, David Sanborn, Michael Franks, Spyro Gyra, but a lot of that music makes me cringe now. Of course, a lot of music in general makes me cringe. >Anyway, if you have the new BNH, you're not missing anything. it's the lure of the one that got away, I think. :) - --Leslie ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 11:23:51 EST From: JPovlock@aol.com Subject: Prime Time TV Juan, if your buddies at Fox want to use my ideas, make sure I get full credit(?) :) Jim P. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 17:34:45 -0600 From: "tom, kelly & jordan" Subject: Re: basia-digest V4 #50 >Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 07:17:48 -0500 >From: "Thelma Gunter" >Subject: Re: waters of march sweep...
