Hee! You know, when I first heard it, I thought to myself, man, she must be trying to go after that ol' Adult Contemporary market, eh! Because (like you said, Brian) it sounded, well, formulaic. That's why I'm suprised it hasn't been a single on AC radio (tho' I know they have distributed promos to the stations- I have one), but I think that may be a blessing in disguise. Oh well... >I'll meet you half-way (or maybe a bit more). I'm sick AND tired of angels. But enough already! When I was in the 'States, >there were angels every-freakin'-where, and often totally out of any >religious context whatsoever! They've been--depending on your point of >view--either elevated or reduced to the status of pop icons. I say reduced. I picture all those nuts who are obsessed with Beanie Babies with exztensive angel collections. (You know what kinda person I'm talking about, at least if you are in the States!) Annoying... >("Neon Genesis Evangelion" was, however, an interesting >interpretation.) YES! *hums theme song* One of my favorite anime (behind 'Vision of Escaflowne' and Gundam Wing) Seriously, if any of you want a different take on angels, boy oh boy, wil you ever get one from this series. Amazing that it was on actual TV- if that happened in America, all the hyperreligious folk would make a big fuss about it. It's *that* interesting. ;) Okay, back on topic... > There are basically three things >that I think made "Clear Horizon" less than it could have been (at least to >my ears): 1). the "angel" line; I agree- nice sentiment considering the story, but cheesy way of putting it. 2). the drum machine [Ack!]; I actually like the drum line. Seriously! The >third complaint is ameliorated somewhat by the story of Basia's depressed >friend, however. For all those who don't know it tho' (in other words, the majority of the planet ) it's a dull song. Me, I'm biased, I like it (it grew on me) but the non-Basites can even pick out that it sure isn't her best song. By a long shot. However, if given a choice to listen to Clear Horizon or any of the following songs, I'll pick CH, every time: 1) Prime Time TV. Sounds lke a promo for ABCs fall lineup circa 1988. So, so dumb! The horns save it- barely- but still, UGH! 2) The Prayer of a Happy Housewife. Oh, man, pile on the gooiness. Once again, horns are great, but how cheesy and way, way over the top in sentimentality. TSI should've had 10 songs, period. 3) Give Me That. "There is no one I would rather...uhh!" Nuff said. I think this was one of the songs she wrote when she wasn't speaking/wrinting English too well. 4) Best Friends. It's not the lyric I have a problem with, it's the pseudo-Estafanisms. And what is with that haunted house keyboard riff? Now that I've adequately peeved everyone off.. seriously, Jim raises a good thread idea: songs by Basia that drive us nuts! As for the gospel choir, was it really a children's choir? >Didn't sound like kids to me. That is actually one of my favorite things >about the song. Mine too. :) Well, maybe kids are maturing at a faster rate these days! >"Umm... Hello... Uhhh... My name's Brian.... and I'm a Basia-holic. *choke* Brother I feel you pain, as I too went remix-mad. Only difference is that if I ever found the original Brave New Hope I'd freak out. I've always regretted not buying it waaaay back when I was 13! And don't even talk to me about "Drunk On Love" remixes and singles! - --Leslie ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 19:59:48 -0600 From: "tom, kelly & jordan" Subject: waters of march sweep... Someone said; "p.s. and "Waters of March" isn't THAT bad, is it? I, personally, can't get enough of her harmonies on that one! >> Right on Meg! Basia's version of Waters of March is far superior to any other version I have ever heard, including Jobim's original! I couldn't agree more. It took me a while to get into the song but it soon became one of my favorite recordings by Basia or anyone. - - -Bill Schnaitter" Unanimously carried with three votes. Basia's best song, Waters of March! I thought of an idea. If and when Basia's band tours this year after the new album is out and instead of someone desinging and wearing a "Basia digest t-shirt" a cheap sort of middle of the road white cotton under garment. All the gentlemen on this list if willing, and brave, as to stand out in the crowd, as a full fledged member in good standing on this list should be easily identified by other list members wearing a KILT. Is this stupid? Tom ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V4 #49 **************************
