I'll meet you half-way (or maybe a bit more). I'm sick AND tired of angels. Theologically, they're an interesting enough subject, although I don't necessarily believe in them. But enough already! When I was in the 'States, there were angels every-freakin'-where, and often totally out of any religious context whatsoever! They've been--depending on your point of view--either elevated or reduced to the status of pop icons. Anyone remember "Date with an Angel?" Ugh! I don't want to see any more angel movies or TV shows. ("Neon Genesis Evangelion" was, however, an interesting interpretation.) And I don't want to hear them used in any more secular music--especially songs by my hero, Basia. There are basically three things that I think made "Clear Horizon" less than it could have been (at least to my ears): 1). the "angel" line; 2). the drum machine [Ack!]; 3). the overused "lost love" theme. Frankly, it does sound a bit formulaic. The third complaint is ameliorated somewhat by the story of Basia's depressed friend, however. As for the gospel choir, was it really a children's choir? Didn't sound like kids to me. That is actually one of my favorite things about the song. >Maybe this >is why Basia doesn't need to record more, because she makes enough money from >suckers from me, who pay full price and receive less than full value! >Dammit!! "Umm... Hello... Uhhh... My name's Brian.... and I'm a Basia-holic. *choke* In 1991, I bought the original version of Brave New Hope, which had seven songs (including two virtually identical mixes of "Brave New Hope"). Then when the nine-song version came out a few months later... I bought that one too! *sob, sob* I own both volumes of 'The Best Remixes' ..." And so on, and so on.... - -Brian* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 10:14:53 -0600 From: Meg Evans Subject: Jim's "Clear Horizon" Lament Happy Friday all, Jim P laments: >...Basia doesn't need to record more, because she makes enough money from >suckers from me, who pay full price and receive less than full value! >Dammit!! James (may I call you James?): you got two totally new pictures of Basia on the Clear Horizon CD, and Danny is ALMOST smiling in one of them. A bargain at twice the price! Don't you worry, she'll tour your city and you'll bump into her in a grocery store. If you happen to be wearing a kilt AND buying her favorite ice cream, I'm sure she'll have NO problem signing a whole BOOK of autographs for you! Wouldn't that be heaven? Hang in there. ;) Meg p.s. and "Waters of March" isn't THAT bad, is it? I, personally, can't get enough of her harmonies on that one! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 16:40:11 -0600 From: Beverly Martin Subject: Re: Basia-holics Anonymous Brian Cundieff wrote: > "Umm... ROTL -- good one dude!!! Although I will admit that not until I came onto the internet did I know that so many Basia items were even available (as I live in small South Texas town that has a fixation on Tejano and Country) and once I found this mailing list.... I started looking and buying stuff! -- Beverly Martin ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V4 #47 **************************
