Ray, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE. My main feeling coming away from this is that Basia loves to make music and not money. It was also great to finally see the origins of "Angels Blush" and "Water of March" -- I would have loved to have bought those compilation albums had they finally existed. And if only Stevie Wonder and Sting would send her some songs... that was another bit of the article I found somewhat troubling: obviously EPIC is trying to force her and Danny's hands in composing new work by sending demo tapes. And even more sobering, that she hated them. But it does sound encouraging that she may be working with Stevie Winwood (this would be a great topper along with her working with the folks from Spyro Gryo!), but I think right now we are waiting to see where things go this year -- maybe Ben's prediction that we might just get an album in the vein of "Go For You" will come true! Again Ray -- THANKS -- hope you did well in your exams. -- Beverly Martin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 12:29:43 -0500 From: "Ashoke S. There was a very interesting note of humility in everything she said and a COMPLETE lack of any aspirations to stardom. It's heart-warming and a little sad at the same time. Heart warming because she is one of my heroes and these sentiments are admirable. The sad part is that, I have a feeling that if she had some other means of livelihood, she probably would not be interested in making music commercially at all. The one thing that I got from her interview is that she has lost ALL interest in the commercial aspects of the music industry. It's fortunate that Danny IS the businessman that he is. > > Mikolaj is 22, he's on the third year of college and has been living > alone for three years. Kevin is the > 22? Holy smokes! See, I didn't see it that way. It seems to me she just has no desire to get in the whole singing-star machine. I mean, she could be singing Diane Warren songs, but she just didn't like them artistically. Commerically I'm sure she knew what they could do for her. But she didn't seem to want to make that compromise. And I'm sure glad she didn't. Also, like Beverley said, Sony was kinda pushing it to her to do that sort of thing. Even worse would be giving in to the record company! They just want to make money. Basia wants to make music. Granted, she probably will get more motivated for financial reasons due to this whole Poland thing, but now it sounds as though she has artistic motives. Like with Glen Ballard (ugh), she felt he would be good musically for her. The more-commercial thing would be a given, but she didn't go there with it, so who knows. Besides, this issue is like the whole England/Poland thing. One day (or interview, more accurately) she's about it, the next she's the reverse. I'm just curious who this new producer is going to be. >Hee, hee. I guess Danny boy is a tad anally-retentive! :-D She has called him a workaholic. You know, I'm curious how he handled the idea of an outside producer treading on his turf. I mean, he knew Kevin for a while, and he wasn;t happy about him coming in on the process. Oh well, guess we'll hear about that later. :) - --Leslie ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 22:46:00 -0500 From: "Joe Palcher" Subject: Oh my gosh! Another Basia moment! I just could not believe it. As many of you know, I lived in Japan for three years up until I moved back to Ohio last summer. I became quite attached to about six or so TV shows in Japan that I would watch religiously. I watched them under the guise that "it will help improve my Japanese." ANYWAY, one of the biggest things that bummed be about coming back to the States was that I would miss this shows. But when I visited a local Japanese grocery, I found most of my favorite shows there--quite recent ones, actually--on video tape. Each tape has about two shows on it, and it kind of helps me keep up on Japanese entertainment. On this one particular show I watch and rent from that store, called "Gakoo E Ikkou" ("Let's Go To School") (stars a teen idol group called V6--know them, Brian?), these two singers, thinking they were really cool by dressing up like Sherlock Holmes and Watson, were searching for this guy that had accidentally been videotaped on a previous show. He had kind of bleach shroomed hair--very "un-Japanese." Anyway, as they were riding into this rice paddy, asking this lady if she'd seen this guy, they played "Whose Side Are You On?" in the background--with Basia's "Whoo oo oo" all through-out--and Ashoke would be happy because there was NO MATT BIANCO! YIPPEE! Isn't it wonderful how we all get excited about little bits and pieces of Basia that we find in our ordinary lives? raburabu joe ******************************************************************** Joe Palcher jjpalcher@msn.com ICQ#4618534 ******************************************************************** ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V4 #30 **************************
