I Hit command C then Command V and here it is....... tom From: jp Sender: owner-basia@smoe.org To: basia@smoe.org Subject: what happened Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 08:52:16 -0400 Meg, I'm glad you've decided to stay. We need new blood ;-). Here's what's happened. Back in early 1996, through the skullduggery of Roach, we all convinced ourselves that Basia would have a new album in 1998. So, we complained about how far away 1998 was. Then we picked the 10 non-Basia albums we would like to have if stranded on a desert island. Then we complained that it was not yet 1998. And Jacki frightened us all by admitting that she works for the U.S. Postal Service. And we prayed for 1998. And Diane changed her ball joints as we argued about whether the new, rumored Basia song should be properly titled "Water of March," or "Waters of March." And we didn't believe 1998 would ever get here as CD Banzai couldn't seem to find any copies of the CD "Water/s of March" it listed on it's web page. And we each picked our top 10 Basia songs and compiled them into a list. And we gave up on 1998 - forcing accusations of Phil being on crack. And we discussed the rumor that Matt Bianco would release a new album. And 1998 got closer. And Roach was hurt in an accident, and we all worried about him and discussed the stuff of life that truly matters. Then we resumed fussing about 1998. Roach had the idea of compiling the video of Basia appearances all of us had - which led to Ben's Basia video project - and Dennis spotted a new Basia video at Sears - and, amazingly, got a copy. And 1998 didn't seem so far away. Dr. Dirk Pilat graduated from medical school and left the list for a while. And we realized 1998 was much closer. And we all sent in our recollections of the first time we heard a Basia song. And we realized 1998 was only a few weeks away as Peter White went on tour in the U.S. Now it's 1998 and there's still no album. So, what's there to talk about? That's why we need new people, such as you Meg, to get us going again. We're worn out. However, the Basia mpg.3 project has my interest. At last I have a copy of "Waters of March." Maybe I'll even get back to work on the Basia midi stuff I promised months ago - but I did say I work on Basia and Danny time. enough rambling - glad you've stayed Meg. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 13:24:32 PST From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: The Jay Beckenstein thing >Did I miss something? Yes! ;) What is this about? Is it an impending release? Yeah. According to http://www.spyrogyra.com Jay Beckenstein (for those going, "Who?", the main Spyro guy and the sax solo hero in the live version of Yearning) is going to have a solo release sometime next year with Basia as one of his illustrious special guests. Whee! Kinda like a 'Just Another Day ' type thing. >Girlfriend, enjoy it while it lasts! :-D Hee! - --Leslie :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 13:37:52 PST From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: In Defense of Mariah (sort of) >Okay, everyone, all this slamming of Mariah Carey is getting me a >little tinsy bit riled up. :) If Basia likes her, she's gotta be >fantastic! :) Hee! Usually that works for me (as my copies of Nightfly, Songs in the Key of Life and Verve Jazz Masters-Astrud Gilberto can attest!) but in my opinion she was great to start out with, but then in her last couple of albums she sounded good still but her songs were dreck (sorry! Just my opinion!) HOWEVER>>>> I really like the songs on 'Butterfly' and I might buy it, if I find it used. Finallly she acts her age! Thank goodness for the groove. Plus, her and Jermaine Dupri's version of 'Sweetheart' is quite good! >And if you find her annoying, which I'm >sure a lot of people do--this is of course, fine. I'm sure other >people may think the same of Basia--heaven save their souls! :) Yeah! ,g> This reminds me of when I went so see Basia in '94. I came back to school proudly wearing my concert tee (what a dork!) when this other kid came in wearing the Spyro Gyra one! Of course I was in shock to find someone my age liking that sort of thing so I had to go talk to him. He was like, "I love Spyro Gyra, they rule, but I can't STAND Basia! She sucks! (this in the Mike Judge vernacular of the day ;) ) She's so annoying, her songs are dumb, etc." I was like, well buddy *why* did you go see her then? Spyro plays enough shows to see them on their own! Well, this set off a friendly semester long debate, especially since I despised Spyro before I saw them live. Anyway... >before I would go to sleep. Cheesy as it sounds, I would listen to >"Dream Lover" and "Hero" and dream of this guy I was absolutely dying >for--named Grayson, a beautiful half-Japanese, half-Irish man! *drool* *slaps my own face* Phew! That's better! >And her album "Daydream" brings tons of fond memories when I was >living outside of Tokyo for three years. I just associate her songs >with the times somehow. That's what makes music so great. Y'know, I seem to remember seeing a video- in Sears- of 'Freeze Thaw' circa 1987. But the memories are waaay foggy and besides, it wasn't on 'New Day' so it must not exist. Oh well. Would that be the softer side of Sears, or...? >Now it's 1998 and there's still no album. So, what's there to talk about? I finally got the Japanese 'Clear Horizon' single! (the demo version too- yay I was looking for that mug forever) Well, on 'She Deserves It' (this is the live version now- no Mark Anthoni) there's this mysterious guy doing Mr. Anthoni's part. Anyone remember who did it on the tour? I don't. It's bugging me. :) It sure isn't Danny White so that elimiinates that possibility. I always thought that the male vocal on the studio version of "She Deserves It" was done by Trey Lorenz. I will check. On the tour it was probably a backup singer. Some of them DO have decent voices you know. Ask Mill-Vannilli! ;-D BTW, now that we know that Danny DIDN'T do the vocals on Masquerade, I have a question: Has Danny ever sung lead on any of the Matt Bianco stuff. Pardon me, but as Meg will attest, I am not a Matt Bianco fan (with the exception of WSAYO) and thank the dude upstairs daily for having given Basia enough sense to fly the coop! Hence, I don't know much of these MB trivia. Regarding this whole Mariah "Scary" thing, I agree with Leslie (and Joe, but that conversation was on the phone, so...). I actually was totally captivated the first time I heard "Love Takes Time". I used really dig her back then. Then with this whole "My All" hype she sounded sooo jaded, like she had a sequencing unit stuck in her throat that was producing the same thing over and over and over again, and much like Celine "Demon", listening to this inane vocal style was like morning sickness. One item of note here (maybe I will do a Chronicle on this sometime), is that there have been several "divas" and there currently are. However, unlike Basia most of them really don't have a well-ground, mature and developed style. Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin are some other exceptions - like Basia, when I listen to their works, spanning decades, there is a recognizable, unique and consistent style (more so in Basia and Aretha than Whitney) that is somehow comforting. It also gives one the opportunity to realize and, hence, admire, the exemplary evolution and maturity that these voices have gone through over the years. Ms. "Demon", on the other hand, had to take an umpteen month hiatus to "work on her image". What does that say about the artist? Talking about Chronicles, someone suggested a while ago that I write one about "heroes". I am working on that and having a ton-o-fun! Thanks for suggesting it. Is is, however, far from complete.
