Listening to Dimitri from Paris "Sacrebleu" - worth checking! That's the translation of the online article that Leslie has found at http://www.zw.com.pl/1998/981117/art1.html (Sorry, I can't tell you what's written on the photo... I didn't see it yet. I'd ask somebody to mail it to me, but I don't want to end with 100 people posting the photo to me ;) Leslie, you, who made this amazing discovery ;) would you mail the photo to me? I used the text browser to download the interview) The Warsaw's Life online, November 17th, 1998 Basia Trzetrzelewska visited Warsaw [Photo] Basia Trzetrzelewska is in Warsaw. The artist, widely known in the world of entertainment, isn't however planning to play live in Poland. She came for the pre-premiere promotion of her new album. - - Isn't it too soon for the greatest hits album? The fans of your talent would surely prefer the album with new music. - - I would also prefer to give them something new, but my record company convinced me that now, before Christmas, everyone is releasing the compilations, because the popular hits sell better. The album "Clear Horizon - the best of Basia" embodies 17 compositions. Apart from the known songs, like "Cruising For Bruising", "Baby You're Mine" or "New Day For You" it includes the brand new propositions: "The Waters Of March", "Go For You", "Angels Blush" and the title one "Clear Horizon". Those songs are the forecast of the new album, which should be released before the 1999 summer holidays. - - What music will be included on this new album? - - This is yet a secret, but I'll reveal a little. I'd like the new album to be happier, more dance-y than what I've been doing before. My inspirations are the same for years; salsa and the latino music in general, jazz, apart from that among others Sting and Prince. - - Will the album tour involve Poland? - - I feel I'm a Pole and I always stress it. Remembering how warm the reception was when I came here to sing live, I'd love to do it again, but that's not so easy. I've got a big, 30 people band, so the costs are big too - - hotels, travels, and of course the payment. I, myself, am ready to sing for nothing, but the band expects the money; the same money as worldwide. - - Do you know the vocalists who currently dominate the Polish scene? - - Since the beginning of the Eighties I live in England, but I'm coming to Poland, privately, quite often. The family youths give me CDs and tapes, so I'm probably quite keen on what you're listening to here. - - What would you advice to the Polish performers, who try to conquer the international market? - - The very talented girls are Edyta Bartosiewicz and Edyta Gorniak. They both sing in English, which is a big bonus. But they don't try to be original. Sometimes, when I listen to Edyta Gorniak, I forget it's her and think it's Mariah Carey. And one more thing: if you want to conquer the world, you have to have much bravery, independence, even if they seem risky. And you need luck. - - Your English beginnings in the Eighties were so much harder... - - When I came to England I've had the advantage of years of singing with Alibabki, with whom I toured whole Poland and the nearest countries, and a short episode with Perfect, with whom I performed in the Polish clubs of Chicago. My English was very poor, I've been learning the language day and night. In London I didn't know the people, but I had nothing to lose so I called the number from the ad in the Melody Maker magazine. That's how I became the vocalist of Bronze, then Matt Bianco, where I met Danny White, the co-writer of my repertoire. This was my bit of luck. Our songs became popular. The debut solo album from 1987, "Time And Tide" sold over million copies. The second, "London, Warsaw, New York" was also popular. Danny also worked with me on the follow-ups "Sweetest Illusion" and "Basia on Broadway". - - You write the English lyrics for your songs. Didn't you ever think of writing a song in Polish? - - I feel the resistance in myself. In England or USA the lyrics are written on the knee (Polish idiom; no idea if it's used in English, it means that the writers don't care much about the lyrics - R) In Poland the tradition is different, shaped by the great poems of Osiecka or Mlynarski. Those examples are very thrilling and intimidating at once. Leslie (the sweet one) (as if there were thousands of Leslies) (there are, actually) (ok, that's the sweet one) wrote: >Now, if our hero Ray can give us a clue on what it says.... List members are here tend to get a lot more subjectively involved in a conversation. And I really DO think that Basia's ABSENCE from the list might have something to do with it. Although, I dare say that if she were to be on this list and just joined right along in our friendly banters, that would probably work too. Okay, everyone, all this slamming of Mariah Carey is getting me a little tinsy bit riled up. :) If Basia likes her, she's gotta be fantastic! :) Okay, it's not like I'm a total fan of Mariah Carey. Though some people might find her high octaves annoying, and her songs senseless pop--well, maybe they are all that. But senseless or not senseless, But I love to listen to divas that got the soul--and a voice, with a range that is incredible. And if you find her annoying, which I'm sure a lot of people do--this is of course, fine. I'm sure other people may think the same of Basia--heaven save their souls! :) One of the reasons that have drawn me to Mariah is that music, especially her music, makes me remember with fond memories times of my past. I'm not sure why hers especially does this to me. Her album "Music Box" I listened to A LOT when I was going through a difficult time while an exchange student in Japan. I listened to it often before I would go to sleep. Cheesy as it sounds, I would listen to "Dream Lover" and "Hero" and dream of this guy I was absolutely dying for--named Grayson, a beautiful half-Japanese, half-Irish man! And her album "Daydream" brings tons of fond memories when I was living outside of Tokyo for three years.
