I had also found the Popcorn interview! But that's all, don't expect more... Basia Trzetrzelewska (who performed in Poland with, among others, Alibabki and Perfect) is one of the few Polish artists (if "few" is equal to "one"... R) who managed to have a career in the West. First in the group Matt Bianco, then solo. Her three studio albums became platinum. Not so long ago her newest CD was released; it's a documentary of her Broadway performance. POPCORN talked to Basia about these concerts, about singing in Polish and managed to convince the star to tell at least a little about her private life. The interview follows. BASIA, WHO CONQUERED BROADWAY POPCORN: Lately you have released the live album. The recording of Broadway performances. Did you conquer Broadway? BASIA: Yes, it was a success. Over ten concerts were sold out. And the publicity had great fun, which you can hear on the CD. To play there even once is a big success for an artist. P: Your albums often feature Polish accents. The newest contains a whole Polish-sung song. How did the audience take it? B: I wanted to record this song, to make people know, that I always was, am and will be a Pole. And the Katarzyna Gaertner's song, "Dzien sie budzi" is simply beautiful anyway. And - did people like it? I think that you can hear it on the album. P: Are you going to include such Polish accents on the next albums? B: I'd like to record few songs in the family language. Maybe I'd release a special album... P: ...and present it live to the Polish audience. B: I love the Polish audience. They're great, which I could feel during the Polish tour. Yes, I'd like to play for the compatriots again. Who knows, maybe even this year? P: We know you from the albums, clips, concerts, but we don't know much about your private life, interests, your boyfriend, who plays in your band. Could you at least reveal a part of the secret? B: Yes, my boyfriend really plays in my band. His name is Kevin Robinson and he's known in London as the musician and producer. He co-works with many stars. Right now, for example, with Pet Shop Boys. (YES!!! R) P: And privately? B: We had known ourselves for a very long time, and we've been together for five years. I think we match each other perfectly. Exactly the same things are pleasant for us. We love raving on bikes or skis. And when we need to calm down, we solve crosswords or cook. And I have to admit that Kevin cooks great. The pity is, that we have so little time for ourselves - we both work hard. P: You're busy, which means that a new album will be out soon. When? B: Oh, I don't know. Right now we're working with Danny White, the author of many of my compositions, on new songs. The album is far away from complete. Maybe we'll manage to have it out before the end of the year. We'll see. P: Your fans wait for it impatiently, just like for the concerts. B: I'll try not to disappoint them. The only thing I can do now is to wish them best. That's another article for you to enjoy... I've found it, looking through my old press cuttings - among the ones of Kylie (I still love you, sugar!) and Pet Shop Boys (umm... no comments :). The article was taken from eerm, not a very reliable paper. (Tabloid, that is) Well... when exactly was Danny Basia's life partner? This article was written after the release of The Sweetest Illusion, by the way. BASIA TRZETRZELEWSKA: the star born in Jaworzno SHE DOESN'T FORGET ABOUT POLAND Three millions of albums sold, a place in the biggest world pop music encyclopaedia, the separate placings with CDs in world's biggest music stores and millions of fans worldwide are the gain of Basia Trzetrzelewska's last 10 years. For a girl, who started her international career from the zero, not even knowing the language - that's not little. When 15 years ago she started singing with, then popular, "Alibabki" she thought that she was close to the top of her singing career. A little later, when Zbigniew Holdys took her into the famous "Perfect" she thought that she was at the top of professional singing... Recently "Alibabki", crying from the emotion and, always sad, Zbigniew Holdys attended the press conference of their famous colleague, who began her first tour of her home country. In 1980 Basia Trzetrzelewska left her family Silesian Jaworzno for London, where her English fiancee worked as the educator in orphanage. The bad knowledge of English was a boundary when Basia was looking for a job. In the popular musical weekly "Melody Maker" she found an ad of a band looking for a female vocalist. When the boss of the band heard her Polish accent, he frowned and said no. The sound engineer, Danny White, also attended the audition and he decided that the sound of this petite Polish girl is more important than her poor English. This way Basia began working with Matt Bianco. The moody bossa novas turned to be the kind of music Basia likes and sings best. She had to "polish" [Wow! Double entendre :) Bet the writer of the article didn't realise... R] the language anyway and work on the conditions of hard, western showbusiness. Luckily she had the help of Danny, who soon became something more than her composer, producer and adviser. After the success of the album recorded with Matt Bianco Basia decided to try the solo career. The success was outstanding. The three CDs she has so far released were sold in over 3 millions of copies. She's loved by the American and Japanese audience and recently she has even conquered Philippines - very exotical for us. Amongst the admirers and also great friends of Basia Trzetrzelewska we can find the singers known to the Polish audiences, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, who are also connected with Basia's recording company. The fame didn't spoil her. She still spends much time thinking about the family and friends she left in the country. Each of her albums contains a Polish accent; one of the most recent of her songs, sounding, as always, jazz-latino, is ended with the words familiar to our ears - "szla dzieweczka..." Despite of the outstanding success, Basia tries to live normally. She keeps the house, she cooks. She taught her man to appreciate the Polish food. Chops with porridge became his favourite dish. But aside from some polite sentences Danny has never learned to speak Polish. "I can never speak, when I'm with Basia, because she talks very quickly and often", complains the sympathetic Englishman. But there is a sentence that he has known since the very beginning of their 12-years relationship. There's no trace of foreign accent there. The sentence is "Jestem bardzo glodny" [I'm very hungry - R] - --- Well! How do you like it? At least that's better than in one of Suzanne Vega interviews the journalist called Ruby "the daughter she [Suzy] still refuses to name". One of the members of Suzanne's mailing list Undertow commented this "You should think up a name for Ruby, Suzanne. My mother always thought that "Hey you" was very catchy". Or am I wrong and Basia and Danny were life partners for 12 years...? There was at least one more article on Basia that I had, but I can't find it; it has at least mentioned Kevin as Basia's love, which made me rather confused, as I also thought that Danny was her husband. Don't flame me! I was 16 then :D From the other news: My brother asked his friend, who owns a scanner, to scan the previous interview (CKM) - but if I were you, I wouldn't be very excited about it, 'cause his friend said it was going to be in CDR format. (Which, of course, does wonders to photos) Anyway, I'll also give him this tabloid interview, cause it has three photos from the special session - the big one, with Basia looking quite tearful, but happy (subtitle: "Despite of the outstanding success Basia lives normally - she keeps house, cooks diners...") then the small, with Basia looking, to my horror, like Kate Bush (subtitle: "She likes singing romantic bossa novas best.") and the photo with Danny (subtitle: "Englishman Danny White was the first to believe in Basia's talent. Now he's her closest friend, life partner and admirer of her cooking.") Hehe, I just found that the paper was called "Housewife". OK... back to learning...
