Any other of the Broadcast/Recording/Audio/Radio people on this list going to be in Las Vegas for the NAB Convention in April? Maybe we can get our own conference going... Dennis ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jan 1999 09:20:50 -0600 From: Meg Evans Subject: Whale call Hey all, To address Richard and Joe's ponderings about the mournful cries at the end of "Yearning," I believe that really IS a recording of whale cries (someone posted that info? or I read it in an interview? or on the liner notes? or something). Joe, SHAME on you for thinking it is synthesized! ;-) How completely effective, too, because I'm sure there are precious few of us who don't instinctively react with melancholy to the sound of a whale call. Everything Basia and Danny wove into that song created a gorgeous tapestry of emotion, nostalgia, longing and peace. I agree with them: that song is one of their best! Ashoke, "Angel" is a very moving poem. You've been holding out on us! Do your talents never end? More snow in Chicago. Sledding this weekend! I plan to move this list to home email when I get a better machine. In any event I am definitely addicted to Basia, listen to her all the time, can't wait until the next CD is released, and would love to see her in concert, hopefully in NYC since I live in NJ. I had to respond today because I noticed two different mails, one from Ashoke and the other, sorry I don't remember (I did an "Evelyn Woods" and deleted) but the comment was about the wailing sound at the end of Yearning. I agree the effect is marvelous and complements the song perfectly. I just wanted to point out that I believe those are humpback whales you are hearing. In reply to Ashoke's question: >That's VERY interesting because the first time I heard Yearning, even though >I got the first stanza right word for word, it did not make complete sense >to me. That part of about "There's willow if bitter, when helpless wild >rose, some sunshine wattle revives our last hopes". Until, that is, I >noticed that the whole section up to this point is in quotes. Is this also >some Polish or other European lore or folk song? Just wondering. >Regards, >Ashoke. Basia is talking about Bach Flower Remedies, i.e. "Tender feelings heal with flowers when your woes and sorrows leave you overwhelmed" Bach Flower remedies work on the etheric or astral body to help heal long-standing emotional and deep seated psychological difficulties. These remedies, while available in the U.S., originated in the U.K. "Yearning" is one of my all-time favorite songs, as is "As" by Stevie Wonder, who I love dearly. Some favorite CDs of '98: Of course, 1. Clear Horizon 2. Best of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band 3. To Travel Sideways, Kid Creole and the Coconuts 4. The Rubaiyat, Alan Hovhaness 5. Miseducation of Lauryn Hill I also enjoyed Peter White's 2 CDs. Thank you all for all the Basia information and for your warmth, humanity, humor, and creativity. I hope to join in more often in the near future. I posted that a couple of days ago. :) The full story is on The Sweetest Interview, but to sum it up Danny felt the song needed an effect that wasn't cheesy in certain parts of the song. They felt the whale enforced the theme of the song. (BTW, if anyone is missing this fine fine interview disc email me privately. I'm willing to share. :) ) - --Leslie ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 10:58:46 PST From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: Re: basia-digest V4 #6 >Basia is talking about Bach Flower Remedies, i.e. "Tender feelings heal >with flowers when your woes and sorrows leave you overwhelmed" >Bach Flower remedies work on the etheric or astral body to help heal >long-standing emotional and deep seated psychological difficulties. >These remedies, while available in the U.S., originated in the U.K. Ya know, this makes an interesting tone to the first verse. If Basia is assuming the guise of "a famous skeptic" then it feels as though she is saying, "well, gee, thanks for the tip but I *still* feel homesick, buddy!" (Just refine that several hundred times over, and you'll get the idea. I certainly am not as eloquent. :) ) Or more accurately (?), no form of remedy can cure such a lonely condition as being homeless in your heart. Ow. >"Yearning" is one of my all-time favorite songs, as is "As" by Stevie Wonder, >who I love dearly. Ohhh!!! A woman after my own heart! That is one of my favorite Stevie tunes as well (guess who got me into Stevie?!) >Some favorite CDs of '98: >5. Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Okay that confirms it. You are the woman. Sometimes my one kitty (HodgePodge) makes those identical noises in the middle of the night for no apparent reason (actually, everytime he does I go pick him up and he starts purring - so may be there is a feline machiavelian reason there). The first time I heard the studio version (I heard the BOB version before that), I almost thought it was the cat!!! :-) At the very end, it really sounds like the crying of a child or something. The message that "this" sounds does convey to me is a cry of wanting something... Regards, Ashoke. ________________________________________________________________ Ashoke S.
