["Joe Palcher" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 09:09:46 +0900 From: "Brian Cundieff" Subject: Yearning Yearning has always been a very powerful song for me, because I've always felt a strong desire to travel to foreign countries, as if there's something somewhere that I need, but can't find at home. But now that I'm here in Japan--a country very different from my own, where I can't really speak the language yet, that song seems to have been written specifically for me. Right down to the line, "I gave up the world to be with you." When I came to Japan, I left behind a wonderful woman who I still love and who still loves me. I believe I could "give up the world" and be happy with her in Texas, but I still feel like I *need* to be here. My contract is for 17 more months, but I can request another 12 next December. Unless something changes between now and then, that's going to be one of the toughest decisions of my life. Anyway, "Yearning" is very very close to the top of my favorite Basia songs list. In other news..... "Brave New Hope" is not so close to the top, but still, I almost crashed my car today when I heard it on the radio. That's an experience I haven't had in a long long time. (Hearing Basia on the radio, that is. Not crashing my car. I haven't had that experience at all.) - -Brian* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 10:12:28 EST From: Richard216@aol.com Subject: Re: basia-digest V4 #3 In a message dated 1/4/99 1:17:03 AM Eastern Standard Time, owner-basia- digest@smoe.org writes: << I love how PSB uses so much Brazilian rhythm and instruments on their album--just as Basia always does. I just want to quickly address "the Big Q" about my five favorite CDs of the year, which will not necessarily have been released this year (I've got LOTS of catching up to do in my life). So here they are: 1) "Book of Secrets" by Loreena McKennitt 2) "Noels Celtiques" by the Ensemble Choral du Bout du Monde (Celtic Christmas music from Brittany) 3) "Contact From The Underworld of Red Boy" by Robbie Robertson 4) "Pray" by Douglas Spotted Eagle 5) "The Sun and The Moon and The Stars" by Spirit of Eden Um, I'm curious about this: >3) Basia's, "KC Masterpiece" Am I missing some inside Basia joke? This time, perhaps I won't be getting over a cold and make dinner for EVERYONE. Not to mention that there is always gourmet coffee and candy and lovable kitty cats to welcome you. Just ask Joe. :-) > >LAYER 1: >>Meg, Joe and Patrick (the only non-Basian > >Jeez, what did HE think of this madness! "these people are NUTS!" > Perhaps he did, but it's mute. He did admit to being intrigued and bugged by the syncopated rhythms of "An Olive Tree" during dinner. > >Well, back to my Michigan snowed-in ways. > Talking about Michigan, if she sings at the Pine Knob, I will drive there. In fact, if she does the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, Detroit/Pine Knob circuit, I might just take a whole week or more off and follow her around and be an honest to god Basia-head! I do believe I will be making many more new friends this year and given the current crop I am soooo looking forward to it. Thank you for your kind words - I am flattered. And yes, I kinda do think of the likes of Basia, Paul Simon and Suzanne Vega as my musical heroes. Many years ago, singing "Homeword Bound" for the first time with my highschool friend and fellow singer, Ankur, I was thrilled when all the harmony we worked out finally came together. I thought Art Garfunkel was the angel Grabriel in disguise - I mean what an ethereal voice! :-) Anyway, back to work! He heard Basia before but not in a while and then only once or twice. So it is always interesting to hear what someone from the outide has to say. He didn't think Clear Horizon was as good as any of her other songs, for one. Then about halfway through he said, "She's always singing with herself! What kind of egoist is she?" which,as the joke it was, made me laugh. Sooo many people dub their own vocals! But he was trying to get my goat. Also, and this is interesting, he thought Waters of March was rushed, like she was doing all she could to get though it. Hmmm. Thank you, Richard, Joe and Jackie for making your variously long trips to Cleveland so we could do this wonderful thing! Jackie, I do hope we get to meet again, with more time to get to know you. Twenty minutes and one iced tea just isn't enough. Richard's impressive collection of Basia memoribilia was a real treat (including a HAND-WRITTEN letter from our girl herself and a newspaper clipping from something like 1988!), and I echo his feeling that we all could have spent many more hours together NOT talking about Basia. Joe's now-famous flannel jammies really ARE adorable, although I only saw them sticking out of an overnight bag (Joe and Ashoke, any incriminating pictures that you're willing to share?), and Ashoke's sumptuous cooking could start riots. Richard, your kind words about each of us (you're incredibly insightful!) and our small gathering really warmed me. You said: "I am proud to consider these individuals as my new friends ... My only regret is that it ended so soon" and I couldn't agree more. I do wish we could have added more of you Basia fans to the group, and I hope we inspire others on the list to meet whenever possible. I'm also hoping that with all the musical talent on this list, we somehow record a tribute or two to Basia! Leslie, you are PERILOUSLY close to Cleveland (in Detroit, yes?) that next time there is no excuse for you not to join us. Or us to join you? Rich" Literally, "Love Love" in Japanese. If you pronounce it out loud, it might roughly sound like it in English. If Japanese were written in English letters, they use "r" for all l's, and they have to add a vowel to the end of every consonant (except "n") in order to pronounce them. So, that's why the spelling is so funked up. In Japanese "raburabu" might be used to describe someone or a couple in love or something. However, I adopted it as a cute way to say "Love," as a salutation at the end of my letters while staying in Japan. Then I just started using for all my e-mail. :) Kind of cute, with personal meaning, I suppose. Thanks for asking! raburabu joe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 17:45:28 -0500 From: "Joe Palcher" Subject: Re: Bilingual... I nearly forgot all he told me. :) Any Portuguese speakers out there? You know how they say, Se E Vida E" or something in the that song, and in English "That's the way life is." Well, I know, from what ex told me, that it's neither a literal translation or something completely different all together. I forgot the better English translation. I don't know if this is reflective of the PSB's Portuguese language ability or not. :) I think Neil Tenant was dating a man from the Canary Islands at one point or another, but that's a different story. :) I hope this mess was useful to you! raburabu joe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 17:51:21 -0500 From: "Joe Palcher" Subject: Re: Party at Dennis's!
