( I think doing the polka was in there somewhere) Hmmm...since I'm one of the few people on the list who actually knows what Ashoke looks like, I'll have to go through some of my old tour books to pick something out for him. I think that hat Danny wears in the "Cruising for Bruising" video would be a good start :-)...oh, and what about the baby thing?!? Of course, we are jumping the gun since there has not been any tour news yet...but we will just have to hold our breaths and wait. My thoughts on Clear Horizon, since I'm listening to it right now...after several listens, I really appreciate how the "new" songs are interspersed with the old ones. ("new" in quotes b/c I downloaded "Angels Blush" and "Waters of March" right after getting back from Cleveland so they're not "new" to me). What amazes me, aside from Basia's incredible voice, is that her and Danny's varied writing styles give us everything from toe-tapping, rug-cutting, butt-shaking, samba-dancing tunes to quiet, sultry, romantic tunes, and in between, some smooth, mid-tempo songs for just listening to. LWNY seems to have gotten short shrift; as many have mentioned the glaring omissions of "Reward" and "Until You Come Back to Me," I wonder why "Brave New Hope" was not included. I absolutely LOVE "Angels Blush," but "Clear Horizon" and "Go For You" are definitely growing on me! Back to work... I've never bought any of her albums and probably never will. So everybody, hold your fire!! ^_~ Having listened to "Clear Horizon" many times and having somewhat recovered from the initial "New Basia Song" euphoria, I've become just a tiiiiiiiiiiny little bit critical of it. It's still a very good song, but I feel that it didn't quite live up to its potential. The lost love theme is one of the most common--if not THE most common--in Basia's music. And she does it very well. However, the chorus of "Clear Horizon" could have made a truly great inspirational song, something along the lines of Mariah Carey's "Hero," except 100 times better, of course!! What I'm saying is that, instead of a song specifically about finding strength and moving on after losing at love, "Clear Horizon" could have had a more all-purpose, uplifting message of self confidence and optimism. I guess what I'm saying is that "Clear Horizon" is a good song that aspired to greatness but didn't quite make it. On the other hand, I see "Go For You" as a song that only aspired to be good, but achieved it's potential so thoroughly, that it is great. Trust me, somewhere in all that mess I just wrote, there's a point. If I remember what it is, I'll let you know. ;-) - -Brian* ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 20:59:38 +0900 From: "Brian Cundieff" Subject: Answers from Brian in Japan... No, I didn't see anything. Keep in mind, though, that the CD had been out for a week (if memory serves) before I bought it. So there might have been a display earlier. Also, when I say I went to "the city" to buy it, I'm talking about a city of only 100,000 people, so it isn't exactly a booming metropolis. And I'm told that in this region, the people are not very internationally aware--kinda' isolationist. I'd expect more fanfare in places like Tokyo and Osaka. Having said all that, this particular store puts all of the new CDs by foreign artists on a big display at the front of the store and Clear Horizon did get a whole column to itself (still there when I went back last Saturday), which is probably more exposure than she's getting in the 'States. And a few people I've talked to do recognize her. > Just as perspective here in my town, they had up displays for Garth >Brooks and Celine Dion, but Basia was relegated to her usual slot in the >Rock/Pop A-Z. Kinda' makes me question the wisdom of democracy in America! ^_~ That reminds me of when I bought The Sweetest Illusion. There used to be a Sound Warehouse (Anybody remember those?) on my way home from school. So if I had time to kill, I'd stop in just to browse. So as I was casually flipping through the Basia CDs (T&T, LWNY, BNH,...), I saw something new and almost peed my pants! > Also, did people seem enthused about Basia??? > > I mean, in Japan, she's been (to my view) a pretty big star -- with >lots of albums and speciality releases... I'm not aware of any buzz around here. Still haven't heard "Clear Horizon" on the radio. But I hate Japanese radio anyway. If you think American DJs are chatty, you ain't heard nuthin'!! Wish I had better news for you. There's probably a lot more enthusiasm in the big cities. ********* So Beverly, I've had some free time this week, so I'm finishing up my "papers" (*wink*) for the post office. If Mr. Roach still has any friends around here, I hope they'll do him a favor and ask him to contact me. Bummer. Or I could be the cover to Brave New Hope except I'm not blue enough. I'm too cheap to pay full price for a couple new songs. So I figure maybe Santa will leave it in my stocking?? I've really been good this year (which really means that I didn't have too much fun :) ) Besides, if Santa doesn't come thru, I'll probably have to purchase it, grumbling like the Grinch about how much her record company just made. Ben said that he would like to hear Basia do a collection of jazz standards. I say not yet - that is for when your career is nearing the end (see Toni Tennille and Carly Simon). I would like to see Basia and Danny do a Christmas CD. I suspect they would treat the songs with the respect they deserve, and not destroy them like the artists do in the "Very Special Christmas" CD's. I want to gag when I hear Stevie Nicks croaking "Silent Night". Something else I would like is for the Danny to do some of his own stuff. I think it would be cool for him to do something real funky on the Hammond organ - maybe a Matt's Mood part 3. With the band they have, it would be hot. Please make sure this e-mail gets sent to the North Pole, hopefully Santa has lots of copies for all of us! Jim P. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 12:19:36 -0500 From: "Ashoke S.
