Wasn't even on the shelves yet! But I got one of the blue shirts to find me a copy off the stocking cart-- only $12.99. Bought it ran out to my mobile CD player.... Right off, I agree with Ben somewhat on "Clear Horizon", but then on both of the new songs there is only Danny, Basia and a drum programmer performing.... so on it seems to me on "Clear Horizon" they tried to make it sound "bigger" than the 3 of them, whilst with "Go For You" they stay with their strengths. Also, by the same token with less musicians in the studio, there was no samba/latin stuff in there -- in a different way, cleaner and simpler. I loved the lyrics for "Clear Horizon", I think this will joining the ranks of my "soothing, focus" songs from Basia ("Yearning", "Perfect Mother", "An Olive Tree" etc. being some of my other) which I like to listen to before I go to my second (main) job.... but at too many times she is overwhelmed by the chorus. But my main favorite is also "Go For You" -- which I hope will be the single - -- not only is it jazzy and fun, it really showcases Basia's vocal talents, and those lyrics!!! I don't know how many of us were singing along by the second or third (or fourth....) listening, but the pentameter!!! So funky and cool, in a way I hope songs like this is the direction for the new album. I was having too much fun listening to that track. As for "Waters of March" and "Angels Blush" -- I cheated and got the Japanese release of those for Xmas last year.... but still veddy nice. The other stuff was fun to have on the compilation, but I would have also liked to have had "Copernicus" onboard. All in all, a nice teaser of what we may get in 1999!!! -- Beverly Martin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 06:16:42 PST From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: another take on Clear Horizon... >Well, I just picked up the new CD, taking a break from coding Netware >server module linkers (don't ask!). Party on, Ben! Sounds like fun! ^_^ > >"Clear Horizon" -- I didn't care for this track. Basia's voice gets >drowned out by the chorus too often, and there wasn't any real >instrumental charm to it. It screams 'Adult Contemporary Radio Hit,' and I usually don't like that kind of thing, but to my surprise I really like the track- sounds like "Just Another Day" in an odd sort of way with the background drums. And a little dash of "Yearning" added for flavor. :) Not the best she can do, however, but as Rob said, "It'll do!" It's the single in Japan, so I'm curious if it'll penetrate the market here. Let's hope so, then more people will be turned on the the REAL good stuff. >"Go For You" -- WOW! WOW! This is one of my favorite Basia tracks >ever. I've always preferred the jazzy, sassy Basia tracks -- >"Sneaking Out the Back Door", "How Dare You", "Not an Angel", >"Masquerade", and "An Olive Tree" are all in my top 10. This one >shows that she can still take a pile of notes and make it sound >wonderful. It also reminded me a lot of "Come To Heaven" with its dips and turns in the melody. Love it, and it really sticks in your head. Definitely a Basia Song, all capital letters intended. :) >"Waters of March" -- very nice. I'd heard the MP3 version of this a >few months ago, but I'd not really gone back to listen to it again. >I love the wordplay here, again a fast, jazzy masterpiece. This is one helluva great interpretation- she does a great job playing it straight while still adding her own elements to it. Plus I love the end when the sax kinda puffs out. Great touch. I've been listening to this song a lot lately, and I kinda envy you guys who are hearing 4 new tracks instead of 2! :) >"Angels Blush" -- the intro to this reminds me of "Copernicus", and >its a nice song. Quite good in fact, but not a standout. I'll play >this a lot around Christmas, I'm sure Sounds kinda like a "Sweetest Illusion" outtake. I like it but it has always seemed like an odd song to me- the words or something don't make complete sense. But the horns are lush as heck- I was amazed to find out it was only Kevin Robinson & Fayyaz Virji playing all those instruments. Thank goodness for mixing. Man, do they ever kick butt. >The other tracks -- a good selection, no big surprises. At 73:30, >there is no room for any extra tracks; I wish they'd had some >alternate versions, like the street version of Baby You're Mine. >I would have tried to get "Copernicus" in there; others have already >mentioned the missing "Until You Come Back To Me"... its lack of >inclusion might have been financially motivated by Sony -- no extra >royalties to pay. Yeah, I would've like to see "Take Him Back Rachel", "More Fire Than Flame" or "Ordinary People" too. At least the former. But come to think of it, a Basia compilation wihtout Copernicus just isn't right! It's almost like her mission statement or something! :) Rob commented on the cover, and I thought the pictures of them were cool (except isn't it odd how Danny & Basia were so closely placed in the picture but seemed so detached from one another? Weird) But what bugged me was the freakin' sunsets, landscapes, etc. I did not want to see stock photos of sunsets! I was actually hoping for something like 'Best Remixes I'. Oh well, it's nice enough. The blue CD thing could be the fault of anyone, really- when making CD packs the designer and the artist themself have a lot to do with it as well as the label. So we can blame Sony, the design firm that did it or even Basia herself, because she could have a lot to do with the choices made design-wise (witness the whole TSI package) Personally, though, I want to kick the designer in the pants for having my dream assignment and not taking it to it's full potential. :) grrr... Finally- isn't it odd to hear these songs back to back? I keep mentally filling in the end of songs with the following original album track. Eeek! ^_^ - -Leslie ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 06:30:18 PST From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: Re: Clear Horizon comments >Wasn't even on the shelves yet! The end of "Go For You" is now going in my personal dictionary under "perfection". I actually like how it leaves you wanting more. Tomorrow I will have a cassette of the two new songs to listen to on a really long flight to Hawaii. I look forward to time to memorize them but do long for more. Hi all - Just got the new CD this afternoon at lunch. Listened to it on the way back to work and thought I'd throw in my two cents on the new tracks and artwork, etc. I really like the two new tracks. So nice to hear something new from this Incredible Duo! They've got a little bit of a different background vocal on "Clear Horizon" with a Ministry Choir. Cool! I'd also never heard Waters of March before... so... very different, but I sorta liked it! The live tracks are great... but wasn't sure if they were the same ones as on BOB... anyone know? The artwork is really cool. Nice 'landscape' photos and a great shot of them in the back. Can't make the 'Fan Club' chat tomorrow night so...have fun if you go! It threw me at first, too, for two reasons: I don't listen to BOB very much at all, and sonically is sounds a bit brighter than the previous release. Some of the instruments are more prominent. But I went so far as to listen to both CD's simultaneously and they are the same. Go For You is the better of the two new ones in my opinion. And it's certainly nice to hear something new after all this time, but I think I was much more impressed with Sweetest Illusion. I'm kind of lukewarm about all this. I've already had all the other tracks for a some time now, so that wasn't even a deal sweetener.
