You know, lately there seems to be a great trend towards "nostalgia" or "greatest hits" or "retrospectives" of artists that have been big in the past - Many sets have been released that cover a span of a certain artist's career, plus one or two NEW cuts - the old time fans will buy the set for the new cuts, and people who liked one or two of the artist's works but never bought an album will buy the greatest hits album... This trend is not necessarily new, however the record labels are targeting MY group of peers - we aren't buying too much of the new stuff, so they want to hook us in with some of the "oldies but goodies"... Blatant commercialism? Trying to rook us out of our hard-earned moolah? Well, YES... However, most of these "greatest hits" packages being released currently have really nice booklets included with the collection - new photos, perhaps a new interview, or a personal note from the artist... So maybe this one will have something nice we can all treasure BESIDES the two new cuts... I have my fingers crossed, anyhow... :) And there WILL be a new WHOLE ALBUM in 1999 - This is NOT a substitute. I sort of like it. It seems to be a Brazilian folk song and has a repetative melody with words that keep mentioning everything that lifes all about. It really does not have much of a melody. The one good thing is that it is Basia and that counts for something. There was a young student from Rio Brazil who usto post on the list. Her name was Tati, short for Tatianna. She usto mention Waters of March. On the non-american version of BOB it replaced the Polish cut on the CD. I miss her happiness and sincerity. I hope everything is okay with her. She no longer has an internet account as I tried to contact her. Anyway It's Okay. "Basia Sings Jobim" - better yet, "Basia AND >Jobim") Great idea! I quite agree, Rob. It would be wonderful to hear Basia sing those alltime favourite Brazilian bossa-nova hits. Preferably in her own and/of Peter White's arrangements, just to add a little more spice to the sometimes overly sugary flavour of those songs. Maybe Diane could relay this wish...? >Leslie - I agree, the dates you came up with were about what I had in >mind, '84-'85. Even if the dates were different, I still can't see any >Sade influence in her style or anything else. Don't you think MAYBE >Astrud Gilberto would be a more likely candidate? > Rob, this matter was already discussed several months ago, evolving into an exhaustive debate on Astrud and what not. Anyway, the conclusion was that Astrud Gilberto has been a major influence on Basia, as evidenced by the song "Astrud" alone.
