By the way, Clear Horizon is listed on CDNow for $12.49. You can advance order it there. Amazon lists it for $14.99, I believe. I'll probably just wait for it to hit the local stores. The shipping charges will likely bring it up to the store price, anyway. And, I'll have it that much quicker. For those of you who nearly suffered an untimely coronary infarction, I apologize. Hello fanatics, Seriously, BEN COMBEE, ARE YOU OUT THERE: Ashoke and I (and countless others, I'm sure) are counting on you to SOMEHOW get a hold of and post the dates for Basia's imminent and upcoming tour, wherein she will enthusiastically promote the astounding THREE new songs (two of which have apparently already been released for public consumption) that will appear on the breathlessly long-awaited "best of" CD for which we will be battling endless lines of unruly Basia fans in order to get a copy on November 17. (Whew!) After FOUR YEARS of waiting, hoping, and cursing, I'm certain we can expect EVERY ONE OF YOU to attend at least one Basia show, if she actually hits the road to promote the astounding three new songs. Talukdar" Subject: THE COPERNICAN CHRONICLES: Drunk on Love _______________________________________________________________ The Greek work "amethystos" basically can be translated as "not drunken." Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it! The gemstone still symbolizes sobriety. _______________________________________________________________ Sometimes the similarity of thoughts from two people are so striking that it makes us stop dead in our tracks. Recently, my friend Patrick read for me an poem/essay that he was in the process of writing to commemorate two years of being "drunk on love". Needless to say, the phrase prodded my curiosity and I had to ask him more about it. As it turns out, this work (a very spellbinding prose-poem) describes Patrick's many thoughts about the relationship in the context of a seemingly endless journey that two souls have embarked on. Each passage is set in context of a place where they spent some time together, spoken of with beautiful clarity and honesty. Of course it is always amazing to hear someone "talk" about their creative process. And in that process Patrick used images, each of which so vividly brought to my mind, different passages of various songs - Basia & Others. I sat and listened in wonder - when it comes to the essentials of human thoughts, there is a similarity that transcends the bounds of spoken language. One particular passage struck in my mind; that of time spent in a cafe. The description was very simple, innocent and all the time thematically reflecting the phrase "And later, I met a boy whose inner life was his true passion...". Such is the power of remembrance. I have spoken before of remembrance as a language. Here it was at work. But there is more to these parallel thoughts than remembrance. While he sat there and explained this labor of love to me, I was remembering Suzanne Vega's "Honeymoon Suite" where she talks about the mysteries of someone who you are very close to and yet those elements of mystery remain: when we sleep so close together that our hair becomes entwined I must have missed that moment in the gateway to his mind For you see, while I played the role of the objective audience, he was offering insights to his writing that he would not divulge to Jeff, to whom Patrick will remain a desirably wholesome mystery. Sometimes we frown on the allure of this mystery, for in an ideal world with perfect communication, there would be no mystery. But I think, it serves a purpose - that of keeping alive our wonderful gift of curiousity, in the light of which we can overlook the seemingly inebrious temporal follies of "selective" thought. After all, he is only very drunk on love. _______________________________________________________________ The legend of the origin of amethyst comes from Greek myths. Dionysus, the god of intoxication, was angered one day by an insult from a mere mortal and swore revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path, creating fierce tigers to carry out his wish. Along came unsuspecting Amethyst, a beautiful young maiden on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana. Diana turned Amethyst into a stature of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from the brutal claws. Dionysus wept tears of wine in remorse for his action at the sight of the beautiful statue. The god's tears stained the quartz purple, creating the gem we know today. _______________________________________________________________ Regards, Ashoke. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 18:26:28 +0100 From: Erling Berg Subject: paintings i"The sweetest illusions " Basia: Still impressed by Your album about «the sweetest illusions».
