We can use this as a kind of mentoring program so when she starts touring again, we as fans will know how to behave. Polka in the Aisles, sing out loud, stump your feet but enjoy yourself. I have been to many Jazz concerts and the fans are a different kind of crowd. You can simply go to a jazz concert and just listen, you must participate to the max. Lets keep the mentoring comments comming for new concert fans so we can welcome Basia back with the zest she she get. Afterall "She deserves it". Half way during the >song she emplores the crowd to sing with her. It was a totally new side to >her which I thought was great. She really needs to get the crowd into it. ...because if the show I saw her at was any indication, really lame people go to her shows and SIT ON THEIR BUTTS. I saw her at Pine Knob (metro Detroit) for the TSI tour and I just wanted to smack everyone. Not only was the place pretty sparsely populated (Pine Knob is huge, she should've went to nearby Meadowbrook IMHO- smaller, more personal, and she'd played there before) but they were dead weight. She had to keep prodding the crowd to respond. My friend and I kept laughing because we cheered really loudly for particular band members and no one really knew what our deal was (Danny was my hero at the time- I even bought Yamaha because that's what he had- so we gave extra shouts to him). Oh gee, are we enjoying ourselves too much? Sooo sorry! I personally was so excited that I kinda was also seeing Incognito. A bunch of fans there (as opposed to the rest who- well, god knows why they were there, scored free tix or something) knew how cool it was that she was there- one couple I loved were dancing down the aisles. She was pretty glad to see that. Plus she got to kiss a whoooole lotta people and got a whole lot of roses (I of course lacked the guts to give her one- BAKA! ) But I really kinda felt bad for Basia at a few points because she kept saying stuff, intended for us to respond to, and we really couldn't understand her. I don't know if it was the mike interfering or what, but her accent was difficult to decipher that night. Poor lady would wait for us to acknowledge what she said and then just kinda go, well......okay then. I'll go back to singing now. It wasn't the most fun feeling, I'm sure. :( - -Leslie going to work on midterms now ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Oct 1998 09:27:23 -0700 From: billsch@transmeta.com (Bill Schnaitter) Subject: Re: Basia concerts > From: "Leslie Brown" > To: basia@smoe.org > ...because if the show I saw her at was any indication, really lame > people go to her shows and SIT ON THEIR BUTTS. I saw her at Pine Knob I was really sorry to hear this account of a Basia concert. If most are like this, no wonder she doesn't tour more. I have been to two of her concerts. Both were in outdoor amphitheaters seating around 8000 I would guess; could be way off. One was in '88 in San Diego area, she was the main act. The other was a few years ago in Concord, CA, east of Oakland. Spiro Gyra was the early act, then Basia. At both concerts the crowd was packed and totally into the music, dancing, screaming, crying. It was really torment to be at the end of the Spiro Gyra set, wanting them to go on but wanting Basia to start. From those concerts, I wondered how she could stand not to tour MORE! What have other shows been like around the country or the world? - -Bill ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Oct 1998 09:32:56 -0700 From: billsch@transmeta.com (Bill Schnaitter) Subject: Re: Basia concerts > From: "Leslie Brown" > To: basia@smoe.org > ...because if the show I saw her at was any indication, really lame > people go to her shows and SIT ON THEIR BUTTS. If most are like this, no wonder she doesn't tour more. I think that if the show were in the city instead of the suburbs, it would have been a lot more exciting. I've been to a few in both and the city of Detroit takes it, hands down. Fox Theatre especially- I saw Pat Metheny Group there and earlier Rippingtons/Najee/Larry Carlton/Acoustic Alchemy, and *those* were what I call jazz crowds! Audience participation to a whole new level. The Fox is where Basia needs to go. The suburban venues usually get these stiffs- when I saw David Sanborn it was a lot like it was with Basia. Maybe too if it was a couple of years earlier- I mean, when Brave New Hope was released, you couldn't find it in Detroit for very long- it was off the shelf pretty quick. (They played the remixes on the radio here, so...) I found that a lot of people didn't even realise Basia did anything new after that when I worked at Media Play. This guy bought Incognito and was talking to me about it and I clued him in that BOB also had the same guys. "Basia has other albums out?" Uh, yeah. But at least he bought it. I'm straying from the point now...time to go! Yell at Danny because he's the man. 'Nuff said. 9. At the approprate moment- chant along with "Until You Come Back To Me-Thats what I'm gonna dooooooo!" BOB-style. Create that feeling in your own locale! 8. Polka down the aisles. Denis was right- the folks that did that at Pine Knob were my heroes. 7. Get misty-eyed at "Yearning." 6. Yell at Kevin (if still applicable in 1999, which I hope it is). I mean, ya gotta.... 5. Observe her costumes, 'cause, well...wow. Not every stage show has this well-dressed a star, much less a concert. 4. Go up to the stage and give her a freakin' rose, durn it! Don't do what I did and get freaked out. 3. Please don't go to the concession stand when Peter does his bit. 2. RESPOND WHEN SHE TALKS TO THE AUDIENCE PLEASE! 1. And the #1 thing you must do at a Basia show is dance- especially when she asks ya to! Okay, so the lack of sleep has finally caught up to me!
