Ashoke says, >5. What's up with this cats-vacuum-cleaners-hate-fest deal? Did I miss something? If you will indulge me, I just want to comment on something included in Ashoke's recent Chronicle: >A friend said to me the other day (about my >taste with respect these two artists) that she found it a very odd >combination. Perhaps. I find that kind of observation interesting, because it would be quite boring if we each listened to only one kind of music. Thankfully, there is so MUCH music to hear. How long could I sustain myself on a musical collection that consisted strictly of Basia-like artists? (But of course, we know that would be IMPOSSIBLE because there really are NO other artists like Basia.) I find it natural that Ashoke listens to and admires Suzanne Vega and Basia in the same breath. And don't we all have some musical skeletons on our CD shelves: groups and artists that don't seem to "match" our personalities, as others perceive us? I have CDs by the likes of Jesus Jones, The Police, Marshall Crenshaw, Living Color, Klark Kent, Gipsy Kings, Animal Logic, Sonny Landreth, Capercaille, Douglas Spotted Eagle, Strunz & Farah, Dave Brubeck, Astrud, Vince Guaraldi, Joni Mitchell, Tears for Fears, Talk Talk, Soto Koto Band, Robbie Robertson, Jane Siberry ... the list goes on and on and on. It is varied and often quite unrelated. My collection is at once entirely and not at ALL a representation of my personality, as I'm sure are the collections of many if not all the people on this list. I remember an ex-boyfriend commenting thusly when I admired a Living Color song on the radio: "You don't like THEM!" And what would YOU know about it, I thought to myself. See, he associated me strongly with Jane Siberry, whose quirky-folksy style is SIGNIFICANTLY different from Living Color. He refused to accept the combination; not surprisingly, that relationship didn't last long. The many kinds of music we are drawn to color our personalities, but don't (or shouldn't) completely define us. We are far more interesting BECAUSE we bring variety into our lives, rather than speaking the same "musical esperanto." Thank you Ashoke, as always, for your thoughtful musings and observations. And unless they have changed it over the last 2 years sense I have been there they are all fairly small with the acoustics of a small room. You get enough sound bouncing that it could seriously confuse a bat. The only "room" there that has the ability to sound good is the Jazz Company. It is fairly natural sounding. I am unaware if they are doing shows outside. If they are this would be much preferable to an inside venue. For may people the inherent problems with these places will not be herd but, those of who have the audiophile syndrome, will plainly hear. I consulted (as well as the rest of the Audiophile Society here) on a few places there. The aforementioned Jazz Company also Mannequins, Wildhorse Saloon, and the disco place whose name escapes me at the moment. I talked to a friend of mine who works at the Jazz Company and he said the fest will be great this year so I will be visiting him this in October. I had chance to give my better half a shopping list of albums that I had been meaning to buy but had not got around to. Well amongst them, she bought the new Marc Antoine album Madrid. Somebody asked if PW appeared on it. Well he does on the first track only on a great album lead in song called Sunland. However PW plays, accordion. Now my wife also picked up and Album called Love is the Power by Rachel Z. Had never heard of her before but now I want to hear more. She plays keyboard, piano. However also very interesting is that her guitar player on quiet a few track on the album is none other than former Basia guitarist Marc Antoine. Also guesting on the album is Narjee. One of the best tracks on the album IMHO is her version of the Alanis Morissette song *Head over Feet*. bfn BobR ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 21:37:53 -0500 From: "Don Leuty" Subject: Re: basia's birthday That's OK.
