["Ashoke S. Talukdar" Subject: THE COPERNICAN CHRONICLES: This mortal coil... These seem to be good times on the list, with the upcoming album. All Basia is good Basia. Some new, some old and some rare. Just like having a fine meal in the mid-west. Some random thoughts that have been running around in various circles: 1. Who IS Basia dating these days? Or did she sneakily get married? And while we are at it, where is this Nick guy? 2. If the musical trends in TSI are indicative, are all her new tracks going to be completely "live"? Imaging Basia, Danny and Peter battling it out in an all acoustic piece... 3. What's up with Rachael? 4. Where the hell is Jeff Hamilton (that incorrigible capitalist)? 5. What's up with this cats-vacuum-cleaners-hate-fest deal? So much to know, so little to ask... _________________________________________________________________________ I have to say that my pulse quickened a little bit when I first read Diane's e-mail. I had almost given up hope of ever seeing Basia perform live. Now, maybe I will. That's the first thought that crossed my mind - to see her in person. Goodness! What a moment that would be. It's only been a short time that I have had exposure to Basia's work. It amazes me, how strongly her style has gripped my attention. Even Suzanne Vega fails to inspire me to return to her work with such gratifying regularity has does Basia. A friend said to me the other day (about my taste with respect these two artists) that she found it a very odd combination. Perhaps. At first my response would have been that I like them for different reasons based on their lyrics, style, etc. But I think it goes deeper than that. I find Suzanne's words to be singularly profound, in that they have a way of molding the listener's life into the story that they are conveying. It was as if they were born of a craft that caters exclusively to the human identity. But it is also, therefore, the kind of work which stays with you even when you are not near - like memories of your childhood. Basia, however, strikes a resonant chord somewhere inside me. It would be hard to describe how and where, and perhaps, unnecessary. But, as I have mentioned before, her songs speak a language that has nothing to do with the words she says or the notes she sings. They are uplifting, satisfying and gripping all at the same time - like a very intense love affair, in whose wake ones emotions lie thankfully spent. In the end, the two are not that different. The difference is in what we hear in a strictly acoustic context. Perhaps, all songwriters ultimately convey the same idealogies, wrapped in different themes. It seems natural therefore that both Suzanne and Basia were influenced by Astrud Gilberto. And when I listen to "Caramel" and "From Now On", the confluence comes through with immense clarity. This mortal coil. We are all still bound to it, speechless. I would never want to hear them both perform together. Somewhere in my mind I take some silly comfort knowing that I need not fear - it will never happen. Perhaps esperanto was never such a good idea. I wonder why. However it is not large and the acoustics are lousy. I am sorry. I did all that I could to help the designers make it more audio friendly. But you know how those architects can be. Still the sound reinforcement is damn good, just not audiophile quality sounding. All McIntosh amps. Any performers I have seen there use the house equipment. It is better than 99% of the sound reinforcement for the road that the performers use. If you call the Disney 800 number they will give you info on where exactly to call.
