Fisli" Subject: PW new album (no Basia, sorry!) Hi everyone! I was going to write a note to tell you about Peter White's new album, when this article came across my desk. I thought I'd share it with you: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One perfect moment leads White to perfect album title By Darith Keo (Sacramento CA) Bee staff writer (Published: Friday, September 18, 1998) Toward the end of his show at the Maui Music Festival last May, Peter White let a young man propose to his girlfriend on stage. "I gave him the microphone," said the smooth jazz guitarist, who performs Saturday at the State Theatre in Modesto. "We started playing 'The Closer I Get to You' as he proposed to his girlfriend. And the audience went crazy. Everybody loved it. "Afterward I asked him, 'Why did you want to do that in front of these people?' And he said, 'It seemed like the perfect moment.' " Those last two words lit the light bulb in White's head. They ended his search for the title for his new album. Thus, the "Perfect Moment" album was born. "I had a lot of trouble coming up with the name for this album," White said from his home in Sherman Oaks. "I was up against deadline. I had to finish by the end of May." "Perfect Moment" also became the title of one of the tunes on the new album, White's seventh since he launched his solo career as a guitarist eight years ago. The new release is scheduled to arrive in stores Oct. 20. A limited number of discs will be accompanied by a three-track, bonus CD. "Perfect Moment" features the talents of saxophone players Grover Washington Jr., Gerald Albright and Greg Vail, and trumpeter Rick Braun. Of the 10 tracks on the album, one -- "My Prayer" -- stands out as White's proudest achievement. "It's really different," he said. "I recorded it out of a stream of consciousness. First on the keyboard ... I played the keyboard into a sequencer, which is a musical version of the word processor. I played the chords against the drum beat. And then I played the guitar on the top. I just improvised the guitar melody on the top. That's why there's really no repetition in this song. Each new section is completely different from the last." White said at least one tune from "Perfect Moment" will be performed at the State. And "My Prayer" might be the one. Saturday's show will be White's third performance at the State. He'll be accompanied by Vail, bass player John Menzano, drummer Dave Owens and percussionist Mombo Hernandez, of Lodi. "Of the high-energy jazz, I think he's the best we've ever had," said John Griswold, manager of the theater. "At least he's been my favorite. He's incredible. We'll sell out." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That pretty much says it all. If you would like to see some photos from the show take a peek at http://www.wcsl.org/recent/white.htm Here is a list of the titles: Peter White: Perfect Moment album 1.) San Diego 2.) Kinda Sweet 3.) Midnight In Manhattan 4.) Perfect Moment 5.) Don't Want To Be A Fool 6.) Autumn Day 7.) My Prayer 8.) Another Rainy Day 9.) The View From Your Window 10.) Windy City As you know, I'm a *mite* biased about this, (HA!) but Peter has really outdone himself on this album - his music is showing a nice maturity and growth while maintaining his "signature" style and typical cheerful breeziness as well as nice soulful and sensitive moments. GOOD STUFF!!! :) Interestingly, Peter was thinking of calling this album "Coast To Coast" or something similar, because he had some titles that referred to cities. "Midnight In Manhattan" has been playing on the radio - yes, the sax is Grover Washington Jr., one of Peter's idols - and it was a great thrill for Peter to be able to record with Grover. The album, on the Columbia label is due to be in USA stores October 20th. If you are slated to see Peter in any of his upcoming solo shows he is playing two of the new tunes - he's playing "Midnight In Manhattan" and "My Prayer" (really NICE!) - and may add another - and the show is lasting about 1 3/4 to two hours in length! He is also going to be touring in a Christmas show featuring David Benoit, Dave Koz and BRENDA RUSSELL (wow!) - I have no dates or venues yet but will pop them out on the website when I do. :) TTFN! - --Di. Hi Diane, Very interesting post. Any idea how one gets the bonus CD? Glad to see that Grover Washington is on the disk. He's from my home town, ya see... First of all, I've been gradually working my way through the Basia MP3 archive at http://www.sli.uio.no/basia/ If it had not been for this list I would never have found out about this archive, it's an invaluable source of extra material for someone such as myself who only has T&T, LWNY, TSI, Broadway and the Brave New Hope EP, all obtained from Music Boulevard. Anyway, last night I finally got to playing the new version of 'Third Time Lucky', the one with the drum beat. Golly, that blew my mind big time!! Why on earth wasn't THAT the version on TSI?? And why oh why isn't there some way I can get it on cassette so I can play it in my car.....? Anyway, my point is this: WHERE can I obtain copies of the 'Drunk on Love' 'Third Time Lucky' and 'Angels Blush' EPs? Or were they all deleted way, way before I ever came along...??? Ok, second question. On T&T track 5 'From Now On' WHAT is that noise right at the end, has anyone else noticed? The one that sounds like a muffled road drill ?? Or am I just paranoid??? Last question. Does anybody know anyone who can do VHS-PAL to VHS-NTSC conversions? I will pay, any currency. I have an English format tape produced by Channel 4 which I need to convert to American format in time for Christmas. This is strictly for private use only. No shop will touch it because it hasn't been taped off TV but when I emailed the Channel 4 to ask if there was anywhere I could legally buy the show on NTSC format, back came the reply 'Sorry, we currently have no plans...' etc. etc. For someone like me who regularly shuttles between UK and USA the dual video format is a positve inconvenience. I buy in both formats whenever possible, and have a VCR that plays both, but if the producers can't be bothered to produce it in NTSC then what is one to do? And yes, I know you can now buy dual format VCRs in the States as well, but that is likely to be a bit beyond the means of the family for whom this is intended. Any thoughts, anyone?? Ok, that's it. You can trash this now!!! Byee!!! There are service here in the USA, and there in the UK, that do video transfers (PAL-NTSC or NTSC-PAL). The cost varies a little bit. Here, it can be from $25 - $30, There, it's about 15 pounds sterling. I purchase some videos only available in the UK from http://www.blackstar.co.uk, and they told me they could have the transfers done in England for me, but I chose to do it here, locally. Check the business listings in your telephone book (if your telephone books have such a thing) or in one of ours the next time you are here. The transfer can be done in a day, in most cases.
