Talukdar" Subject: Notebook, mailing instructions, etc. Ok gang, I have 13 responses so far. I was kinda serious about the number 20, although I will use whatever I get. It will be a bit of an effort and I think to make it worthwhile we need a few more shows of hands. On another note, I want to thank Diane for her offer to hand it to Peter White. However, realistically, I don't think we will be done. Even if I could collect all the contributions, between full time work and full time school, it will be impossible for me to get it all put together, scan the pages, send in the proofs and get it bound, etc. by October! Besides, I am sure we all want this to be good, so I don't want to rush anyone. In the meantime, my mailing address is : Ashoke Talukdar 3741 Monticello Blvd. Cleveland Hts, OH 44121. I advise AGAINST mailing things that require me to sign for them, coz I am rarely home when mail, UPS, FedEx, etc. come for delivery. Make sure you use padded envelopes and/or cardboard backing if you are sending fragile artwork. A couple of general things regarding format. 1. Since this is going to be bound, I will paste all contributions onto 8.5"x11" stationary. For binding purposes I think I'll opt for a thread bind rather than a glue bind, because the former is longer lasting. So we need to have about 1-1.5" gutter on the left margin. Which means that whatver you contribute, MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 7-7.5" WIDE. So, unless I get something that fits already, I might have to crop it. 2. Remember that this is a GIFT to Basia. Your contribution does not have to be in words - you can submit anything that can be pasted into a 7.5"x9" (approx.) area and I encourage you be creative. Do lay it out on a piece of paper yourself, before sending me the final version. In return, when the page is ready, I will scan it and send you a proof. 3. If anyone has interesting Basia related artwork that they would like to include as watermarks for different pages, I would LOVE to have them. Ideally I would like for the pages to be different from each other. 4. I would also like to receive anecdotes that are Basia related. These you could e-mail me privately. They can include tales of how YOU got introduced/ interested in Basia's work, etc. I will try to interperse the pages with translucent paper with these tales printed, along with the authors name. More ideas are welcome... I think this will be great way to show her our appreciation. I love the enthusiasm you have shown. Keep 'em coming, folks. Regards, Ashoke. ________________________________________________________________ Ashoke S. I take it you are trying to compile a little "love offering" to our favorite singer. What a nice idea! I first stumbled upon "London Warsaw New York" by accident while browsing in the Wauwatosa Wisconsin public library's CD collection. Was blown away by what I heard! Shortly thereafter, I found a tape of the same in the cut-out shelves at Target, a local department store. I couldn't find anything else until last week, when I found more at Tower Records in Toronto. "Basia on Broadway" gave me the idea of contacting the Sony website, and here I am. I haven't explored the whole site yet, and am hoping to find lyrics. I have already contacted Milwaukee's Polish Festivals, Inc. about trying to get Basia for Polish Fest, the largest Polish festival in the country. What's the scoop on Basia and Danny White? Apparently they were once married but are now divorced. Does Basia have a love interest at present? Thanks for doing this. ~Marianne Gorski ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 13:51:34 -0400 From: "Ashoke S. All electronic submissions should be sent to : atalukdar@research.mhmc.org This server has more disk-space, etc. I would REALLY prefer that you ZIP your submissions. I can decode ZIP and UNIX compressed (.Z) archives. I can also decode Mac BinHEX and MIME files. The following formats are kosher: Any Office 97 product (word, powerpoint, Photoeditor, etc.) or earlier Word Perfect v7.0 or earlier Adobe Photoshop v5.0 or earlier (as long as you save things in PC format) Corel Draw v7.0 or earlier Adobe Pagemaker 6.0 or earlier (NOT preferred) In addition, you can send me digital artwork in any of the following formats: Raster: JPEG (preferred), TIFF, GIF, BMP, SunRaster Vector: Enhanced Meta File, Windows Meta File, Encapsulated PostScript If you send color documents, I will print them out, in color, at 720 dpi. Hence, scan them at 360 dpi, 24-bit color, for optimal results. For the illustration minded folks, if you have specific colorimetric adjustments you like to use (brightness & contrast settings, gamma, etc.), let me know and I will use those values to print. > >And a lot of us sent in our "how we first heard Basia" letters what - a >year or so ago? > Could I perhaps recruit some volunteers to dig through the archives and send me some interesting ones? Ben, I've been desperately reading through back numbers of the digest (the ones I missed when I was on holiday in the States in August) to see if a general call went out to ask people to register with you if they wanted to receive copies of the CD when it became available. Have you shipped it yet? Did I miss it? Yours in desperation Jan Johnson p.s. Have you shipped it yet? Did I > miss it? Nope... work and filmmaking have been consuming my time, so I've not yet finished v2... but a fresh upgrade to my machine last week got my NLE setup stable again, and I should be able to bring in the remaining videos now. Just hope my CDR drive holds up too (having problems with TDK media at 4x speed lately). Its about an hour work for each clip -- that involves playing the clip to look for trouble areas and set the levels, then digitizing, then playing the digitized clip to make sure its in sync and stereo, then clipping off the front and end before the clip starts, and then finally taking that output and starting up the MPEG compressor, which then takes three to four hours to run. (I ought to grab its source and run it through CodeWarrior to speed it up :) But, yes, I'm gathering names and email addresses. When I'm ready to start duplicating and shipping, I'll let everyone know in a seperate mailing. - -- Benjamin L.
