I like the ideas that are flowing! :) I will ask Peter White if he would mind personally *handing* the book to Basia - that way we will be assured of delivery... I don't think he'd mind this kind of thing just this once (he is a busy guy!)... I have to tell you, he's planning to go to England right around the first week of October, for two weeks. I enjoyed hearing her and the band do the Aretha rendition of Bacharach-David's 'I say a Little Prayer'. Was that actually Basia doing the lead on that selection, tho? Almost seemed a lower register from the lead singer, whereas the backups seemed to contain her soprano Also, someone's female voice near the tape recorder suggesting it would be worth hearing her do some Steely Dan. Amen, sister! To me it argues for more of the sort from them, and I know others here agree with me on that. A tribute album, or something that would otherwise show their range of appreciation. Offensive tho it seems my suggestion SONY force them to produce more albums, it is probably more of a case of her positioning as a fairly popular artist in Japan, there appears to be no tough love sort of prompting from that direction. Good for SONY and Basia/Danny - not for us. Is it my math, or is the number of years between TSI (Spring 1994) and the now OFFICIALLY promised LNR (Late Ninety-nine Release) NOT actually 5+ years, as was suggested here a little while back? Speaking of Burt Bacharach, I understand a boxed set is due in October (Larry take note). Anyone here catch his TV tribute on the US cable network TNT earlier this summer? It was very good, tho the weakest segment was, ironically, Dionne Warwick. Still, a lot of new artists doing old Burt (the guy is almost 70!) stuff was - stimulating! The only downside is with so many fans writing her messages of good wishes, she will not send me any response. But thats okay. I will say that I am currently performing with my artistic abilities which is "Pen and Ink". I am do ing a Portrait of her and plan on sending it to her with a special message. I will keep trying until I hear back from her personally. Count me in also. Amen, sister! > That's definitely Ms. B on the lead vocal of ISALP (which, as I mentioned before, is one of *my* favorite songs, too)... though that does raise a good point-- since her vocal lessons, around the time TSI was being recorded, she's had a tendency to sing "correctly", which in her case lowers her range noticeably. One of the things I liked most about the KC show (and the live tracks from the 1276 promo) is that she is singing the material as it was originally recorded, which, I grant you, is much rougher on the throat night after night than the way she sings now. And since our goal is to keep her singing as long as possible, I suppose that's all for the best... *sigh*... - -Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 16:18:46 -0400 From: jp Subject: basia book count me in, too. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 17:22:05 -0700 From: "Robert J. Phil ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 15:10:10 PDT From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: It's a newwwwbie for you... Sorry! Horrible pun, I know! ^_^ I've been lurking for a couple of weeks so I thought it was high time I actually post something! (My name is Leslie by the way. Nice to meet all of you ^_^) First of all, the book sounds like a wonderful idea. I really think Basia would appreciate it. Heck, ANYONE appreciates being told they have had an impact on others and that they are doing a great job at their art! Okay, here is my intro- to-Basia story. We were coming back from Cedar Point and a friend of ours just freaks out when this song comes on. "Turn it up!! This is Basia! She just came out she's so great etc. etc." The song was, of course, Time and Tide. Now, this was definitely a new sound for me. (Especially considering the wasteland that was pop music in 1988) I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was only eleven at this time, so maybe that fact has something to do with it. But I had to hear more of this woman's voice! "Wave" stations were in full force then, and my dad was a Wave kinda guy. One day we were in the car and- there she was again! "New Day for You". I heard she was coming in concert, and I bugged my parents to take me. But, I was a little young in their eyes for concerts. Time went on. So here comes 1990, and- hey!- "Cruising for Bruising" drops. I loved the rhythms and the sound. She was everywhere then it seemed like so I was really up on VH1. I remember seening the "Until You Come Back to Me" video and just thinking, wow. That year she was up for an American Music Award and I remember cheering her on. But Anita Baker beat her- no fair! ^_^ The funny thing was I still didn't own any tapes of hers (no CDs yet for me). We had 2 great contemp. jazz stations that played her all the time (ah, those were the days of halfway decent Detroit radio), on one they frequently played the remixes of "Cruising for Bruising" and "UYCBTM" BEFORE Brave New Hope was out of CD-5 mode. Finally, though, I got them both- and played them TO DEATH. Actually when I got my CD player, the rereleased "Brave New Hope" was my first CD. Well, through the most awkward years I can remember (AKA high school) I could escape with my headphones and LWNY. Her optimism and the personal subjects she dealt with from her own life in her music were quite encouraging to me. Seems like kids pick their 'heroes' at that age, be they sports heroes or musicians or whatever- Basia was my "hero". Of course, this was funny because I was one of those kids who dyed their hair purple (long and with bangs though of course!) and wore all black. Talk about demographic crossover! After I saw her in '94 I bought a t-shirt I wore it to school complete with my usual regalia. I must have looked like some nutty smooth-jazz punk. So TSI came out, I had to listen to it a few times, then I loved it. It kinda threw me though. I saw her perform with an equally smitten friend of mine and we hooted at Danny. And had to get over the fact that she was REAL! An actual person! Then college came and so did Basia. Brave New Hope was my anthem when I got out of a particularly difficult relationship situaltion. I got BOB. I listened some more. Then, nothing. For a whole year and a half. I must have burned out. Then 3 weeks ago I pulled BOB out of the cobwebs and listened, time giving me better objectivity. And I thought, man! this really is great stuff. Maybe it's maturity (I'm still only 21- not too adult!) , but then TSI made much more sense. And last night before I fell asleep, I put in T&T (as was my custom in days of yore) and felt it again. One line, "for better or worse, this time I'm sure/ It's gonna last/ gonna last forever" really got me. What a bold and passionate statement- especially considering the origin of the song ^_^ But, finally, I could understand truly where Basia was coming from. Yearning is the same way- I can understand now finding my home in another person (I have). This is heavy stuff- one can't be fooled by the deceptively simple feel of the music's melody ("what ties us to this mortal coil we should sever"- has anyone ever wondered if 'he' really meant such a thing.?) Anyway, I like Basia . I'm going to shut up now before the people who get the digest version want to kick my butt. I think this is a great forum and I look forward to being able to contribute. Honestly, I usually am not so long winded. ^_^ You can count me in for the book, too. My hubby had a beta version of Windows 98 and it was about to expire. He tried to uninstall it and it would not go away so he and my computer-like son got the idea to change the date. It messed up my desk top and he has not had time to deal with it. We are in South Carolina and we are about as low as you can get on the education level however we have managed to keep up with changing years. Thanks for the concern.
