This time a belated "thank you" to Ashoke, who continues to supply elaborate food for thought (better than an orange-oat-bran muffin that doesn't taste like orange), for his "Copernican Chronicles: A Perfect Mother." As a mother, divorced, and the primary custodial parent of my 7-year-old son, the sometimes exhausting experience is one that constantly changes. Just when I think I've mastered something with my son, I realize he has gone on without me to the next stage and I have to start all over. And when I feel my patience being stretched to a thread (which is often), I can reflect on the thoughts Ashoke offered, the philosophies of Shari Lewis that are being echoed on the airwaves in the wake of her passing, the lessons I've learned from my parents (what to do and what NOT to do), the support of my dear friends, and all the other spiritual and philosophical sources that soothe, reassure, and reinforce to help me through. I am fortunate and THANKFUL to have so much wisdom around me! "Peace" is the message I keep with me daily, and one I wish I could bring to the lives of all those wee ones who live at the mercy of an unhappy and unhealthy adult. Maybe I can't be the perfect mother, and have the perfect relationship with my son, but he is the most perfectly beautiful, wonderful, charming being in my universe, and if I can teach him love and peace and help him grow and learn, while keeping him safe, then more than any other conceivable achievement, I'll feel like I've done my job and made my contribution to the world. Thank you, BasiaList, for indulging me, and thanks again, dear Ashoke. Good to know that Basia and Danny continue to weave their charm into our lives. Regarding, hands, I will partially support Jeff's bid to rule the world right (pardon the pun). However, the following interesting tale from my advisor in college, who is a closet left-hander! Apparently, his parents (austrian) implanted in his (then young) mind the idea that if he wrote with his left hand or used the left hand for other activities in our dextro-philic universe, he would be regarded as somewhat less than the whole egg, if you will. So he grew up forcing himself to use his right hand. I would say that one look at a hand written letter from him will prove to you that in spite of their best intentions, parents do make blunders! :-) Meg's post regarding motherhood came in as I was writing this. You are most welcome, Meg. All I have to say is that the future world might be IN the hands tomorrow's children but it is being SHAPED by the hands of today's mothers. Your reward, Meg, is the unspoken appreciation of thousands of Sean's, everytime they are wheeled into a child trauma unit for less than optimal parental care. This morning I finally dragged out my LWNY CD again and gave it a whirl on my way to work. But more about that later... Talukdar" Subject: THE COPERNICAN CHRONICLES: Always Something to Improve I have to admit that the I heard a number of the songs from the London Warsaw New York CD on the Broadway album and Brave New Hope EP first. When I actually bought the album, it did not overwhelm me, the way The Sweetest Illusion did. I believe that music appreciation is a process of absorption where we "tune" in to one or more aspects of an artist and his or her work. What I realized with some wonder is that in the case of Basia and Danny, it is the exquisitely aural nature of there work that I find so magnetic. Hence, my initial difficulty with the LWNY album. There are some fine technical differences in the sound quality - a natural progression from Time and Tide - which makes the album sound somewhat more "engineered" than the other 3 full length works. It adds a twist to comparing this album with the Broadway version, the latter being a live performance, along with its own set of acoustic intricacies. "Cruising for Bruising" is a good example - the studio version sounds as though it were written with the possibility of live improvisations and interpretations in mind. One of the qualities I admire in Basia's music is also exemplified in this song - it eludes my ability to decide which version I like more. But LWNY continues to sound different from her collective works, because in spite of the delightfully concocted, synthesized sound of the TSI title track, that album as a unique "earthiness" to it, so that the sounds are not so different from T&T (which to me is THE quintessential Basia) or BOB. What I find interesting is the actual progression of that sound. In this aspect Basia faces a much greater challenge than the well known female songWRITERS today. When one tunes mostly into the lyrics, the minute variations in the sound are perhaps not that important, so that artists like Tori Amos and Suzanne Vega can experiment with vastly different acoustic environments. But the experimental style and melodic threads started in T&T that, in a way, forever defined Basia, almost HAD to reach their developmental peak in LWNY, perhaps in an all too obligatory fashion. Regardless of whether this was the result of her producers wanting her to refine a particular "brand" of sound or just her penchant for the sound itself, it is quite possible that the LWNY might have been, in some ways, responsible for the long gap between it and TSI - it was the time to try something else. TSI almost sounds like an effort to go back to the basics, but not completely so. It looses much of the technical wizardry but retains the polish - BOTH of which are quite audible in LWNY. The balance is impressively elegant. It says a lot about an artists talent and resolve when the albums thrive even in the presence of variations of the prime aspect in focus - in Basia's case, the tunes, melodies and arrangements. In this respect I completely agree with the sentiment (I believe I read this on one Jeff Hamilton's web pages) that TSI is one of the most well- crafted pop albums of our times. But LWNY provided for me a slightly different facet of Basia the songwriter which I had not experienced before (mostly due to faults of my own). For the past few days, including this morning, before leaving home, I did what I should have done when I first got the CD - read the lyrics as the songs played, almost turning a bit deaf to the tonal differences. Now the album feels somewhat more intimate and isolated at the same time. After thinking about the lyrics, the only reason I can attach to this feeling is the lack of subjective coherence in the different songs - not that this is a requirement for a good album, but it IS present in T&T and TSI. LWNY talks about many human feelings - friendship, love lost and won, homesickness, relationships, childhood, etc. - much like her other albums. But the treatment of these issues here is more isolated to each song. Hence, more so than in any other album, this is where her song writing skills shine. "Copernicus" is the song that has always intrigued me and provides a good example. As I read the lyrics, I was vividly picturing scenes from the movie "The Silence" (Ingmar Bergman), which is a grim visual essay about our inability to communicate with each other. Inspite of the difference in the "tone" of these two works, the starkness of the imagery is a striking testimony to the strength of Basia's lyrics, in their ability to create this bizarrely incongruous illusion, but ONLY till the end of the song. And when, a short while later, you are listening with some amusement about the intricacies of Rachael's man-troubles, explained with flair, finesse and aplomb, it is easy to overlook the artistic significance of words that can carry you effortlessly on such a incredible journey. Ultimately, we all have our own reasons to define our affinities for different artists. Whereas some of the artists we like are those whose works we personally identify with, there are others, who engage our attention simply because we are afforded the opportunity of rediscovering the art itself over and over again, albeit in a more objective way. I can definitely say that, for me, the latter world is DEFINED by Basia. Peace, Ashoke. ________________________________________________________________ Ashoke S.
