Interestingly, and for the benefit of those who have never heard this story (apologies to those who have), "From Now On" originally had a full band arrangement. A tape of the full arrangement was sent to Peter White (who lives in the US), who then added his little string-picking guitar part to the whole arrangement and sent it back to Basia & Danny. After many more months of work on the album (and I believe, after the album was mastered and in pressing, or, unable to be recalled), Danny casually mentioned, "Oh, by the way, we scrapped the original version of "From Now On" - cut everyone away except a little percussion, the singing, and your guitar. Hope you don't mind!" So that's the story of "From Now On". :) TTFN! --Di. I have been confused with another list member. I DID playfully ask why one of our colleagues would want to play 33 rpm records at the 45 rpm speed, but that was my sole contribution to that discussion." Tom sez: I was the guy who played the 45 at 33, it was me, I confess, Half a minute on the wrong speed. BIG DEAL. At the time I did that the postings on this list were nill, minimal at best. Remember just a few months ago, the long rambling postings did'nt exist. Viva la Basia! Tom PS: Don't forget to attend the Kansas City Jazz and Blues Festival this weeekend it's a great time. That is if you live on this side of the planet. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 20:12:16 -0400 From: Jeff Hamilton Subject: Off topic: sounds of the MP3 technical problem At 09:12 AM 7/16/98 -0500, Martin Praum wrote: >> I recently downloaded a file from the MP3 archive, including a player. >> When starting the file, I only hear a mixture of bits & bytes running >> through my computer. Sounds interesting (unless it's the same sound you here when you pick up a phone line and a computer is using it)... Heheh - that reminds me of the story me and a friend used to tell people about how the B-52's recorded "Revolution Earth" - Kate Pierson and Keith Strickland called up Fred Schneider to tell him that Nile Rodgers (the producer) was sick, and so all studio sessions for the week would be cancelled. Then THEY showed up at the studio and told Nile that Fred was sick and that he'd just suggested they record the song without him. It was through this trickery that the only B-52's song without that annoying chatter was recorded. (P.S. to any B-52's fan on this list - it's just a joke! Really, I love that band...) Anyway, I just logged back on, and there were 445 messages waiting to be downloaded (yahoo...) and seems half of them were from basia@smoe.org (Basia being one of my favorite discussion topics, I really don't mind!). I thought I'd just type one long response here instead of typing a hundred individual repies, which would certainly annoy everyone, I'm sure. (Beverly Martin wrote about BMG...) "I'd Like To Buy A Vowel" LOL (Larry Lipman (who, by the way, IS a pretty nice guy) threatened Jeff) C'mon - I thought we agreed to keep this stuff off of the list (Beverly inquired about the 3-CD set) I haven't even SEEN it in any stores yet - but maybe I just haven't looked... (William McAfee sent a message to Beverly and CC'ed it to the list) C'mon - the whole point of Beverly's "mini-list" was to avoid posting about the mail-fraud topic to the list, right (Larry Lipman commented about people suggesting that he was "rambling" about the various speeds thingy) I think I'm the one who started the various turntable speeds topic (maybe I wasn't) - but yeah - I wouldn't call it "rambling" either - there were a few of us talking about it and it was no more off-topic than the Ford/Chevy and PC/Mac topics (which I think I also inadvertantly started too - maybe I should watch myself a little more often)... (Juan (last name?) wrote about the record contract subject (along with a few other people) and he said "But I wonder now if Basia and Danny are without a record deal - and without a producer to push them.") Basia & Danny have not worked with a third-party producer as far as I know. (Joe Baker, finishing up the Baker vs. Lipman" series, posted (in response to Ashoke's comment) "This guy is an antagonist. Let's beat him up. You go first, I'll back you up.") LOL (Jeff Wasilko suggested that everyone shut the hell up about Roach's shipments (well, Jeff W. said it in quite a polite manner - the "shutting the hell up" is the way I feel about it)). Nevertheless (William McAbee made a few OFFERS...) and these were really quite funny. I think the starting bids were rather low, however. Cheers....
