I think the Basia write-up is actually just an artifact of BMG and Sony strikng a deal where BMG now carries older Sony Music recordings. For a long time, there were discs that were exclusive to Columbia House, Sony's CD club arm. Now that BMG has access to that catalog, I'd expect them to highlight some of the better people on the Sony labels as they'd be new to the BMG loyal members. - -- Benjamin L. Talukdar" Subject: Ladies and gentlemen : "Baker vs. Lipman" followed by "Basia" Ok guys. You're beginning to sound like my late grandparents who were married for 62 years! :-) __________________________________________ I know I keep going back to some artists, but having dabbled in some music myself, I can't help becoming very attached to certain styles of delivery. I remember the first time I heard Tori Amos. It was about 1:00 in the morning and I was about to fall asleep, when I heard some piano and a female voice on my neighbors TV. I rushed upstairs and turned on my TV thinking it was Sarah, only to find someone else, in a stunning black evening dress, articulating her passionate sentiments in front of a Steinway - almost a surrealistic "Fabulous Baker Boys" dream. In reality, it was only the Late Show with D.L. and the woman in black was Tori Amos. Tori is one of the few artists that I know who can completely overwhelm 20,000 with nothing but her voice and fingers. I find this fascinating because this was also the reason I got hooked on to Sarah - I was listening to the title track of Fumbling Towards Ecstacy and it was "OK". When the song ended there were about 50 seconds of silence and then, the opening chords of the acoustic "Possession" started (a hidden track, with Sarah on the piano and vocals). I was driving home after a night out with the boys. I nearly got into a "Drunk on Love"-esque incident, but didn't, thanks to a rather indifferent Cleveland cop (I have tried to avoid driving cars that look like donuts). I have often wondered, why it is that with Danny being as superb as he is on the keys, Basia has not penned a few acoustic numbers along the lines of "From Now On" or at least some acoustic versions of her existing songs. The only exception is the piano-only version of "Brave New Hope" from the BNH CD (actually, I was kind of hoping the Broadway version would be acapella). Basia is also somewhat unique among the other female vocalists that I listen to in that she rarely, if ever, did covers. I think sometimes it is wonderful to rediscover a song by one favorite artist because of the interpretation by another. Two songs come to mind - Tori covering Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat" and Sinead doing Elton John's "Sacrifice". Both covers are VERY different from the originals and very captivating. I guess I am responding late to the whole discussion about covers that we went through a while ago (affectionately summed up as the "Mikey-Spice Episodes"). But in some ways, this is another reason why Basia is missing out. These are times when we are all looking back into the past in some way or the other - urban to rural migration, Chrysler's 300M, Sinead crooning "Am I not your girl". What a wealth of tributes Basia could have left as legacy, with her powerful voice. ________________________________________________________________ Ashoke S.
