Hey, fellow Basia-nuts... working late at work again tonight. I just got an email from CDNow -- they are having a 30% off sale on imports for the next week, which makes all three import Matt Bianco albums $14. I'm just about to order "Matt Bianco" from them -- it will be very cool to have their second, albeit Basia-and-Danny-less, album on CD. The other two they had listed were "Whose Side Are You On?" and "The Best Of..." If you're interested, please visit CDNow through the links on BasiaWeb. Sales made through those links results in a small commision in CDNow Credit for me for directing people to their site. Note, as a rule, I don't emphasise that aspect of BasiaWeb. but I think this is one of the best deals for us Americans to pick up more Matt Bianco music, and didn't want ya'll to miss it. (BTW, BasiaWeb is at http://basia.techwood.org/ ...just in case) By the way, I got the CD mailers tonight, so the beta discs will go out on Wednesday morning. Contributors should look for them in your mailbox on Saturday or Monday. - -- Benjamin L. First, IMHO, Basia is more influenced by the Bossa Nova craze which swept the world in the early to mid 60s than by the tradional samba. Musicians in Brazil took traditional samba rhythms and added chromatic chordings similar to what bebop players had done in jazz shortly after World War II. American guitarist Charlie Byrd went to Brazil on a U.S. State Department sponsored visit - heard the new music - and brought it back to the U.S. In 1962, Byrd and Stan Getz recorded "Jazz Samba" (yes, it's on CD) for Verve, and the bossa nova craze was on. In 1964, Getz brought two of the bossa nova masters from Brazil to record in New York - Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto. Since neither of them spoke English, they brought along Gilberto's wife, Astrud, who did. She wound up singing on the album as others have outlined. That album is simply "Getz/Gilberto" on Verve and is probably still available on CD. Through the 60s and 70s Astrud recorded a number of albums, IMHO, some very good and some absolutely terrible. The Verve Jazz Masters #9 Meg recommends is a good one to get the flavor of what she did. My favorite though, is a rather obscure album entitled "Getz Au Go Go" recorded live at Greenwich Village's Cafe Au Go Go in 1964. Astrud sings with Getz on sax and Gary Burton on vibes. I think the small setting and small combo mix very well with her small voice - and she's actually pretty much in tune. If you like guitar, look for Joao Gilberto - "Joao Gilberto Live in Montreaux" is one I enjoy. If you like Hammond B3 organ - several record companies are re-releasing stuff by Walter Wanderly - Astrud sang with him some, too. The master and composer of a lot of bossa nova was Antonio Carlos Jobim - anything I've heard by him is very good. To hear him with other female vocalists, I'd suggest "Elis and Tom" (Elis Regina) which includes what I believe is the original "Waters of March/Aguas de Marco", or "Rio Revisited" with Gal Costa. That one's on video, too. And for a modern look at Tom Jobim, there's "Red, Hot and Rio" a collection of Jobim's songs played by lots of pop, dance and jazz musicians. Astrud sings "Desafinado" with George Michael, Everything But The Girl does a jungle mix of "Corcovado", and Herbie Mann's flute is wild on "One Note Samba." And Jobim himself is included, singing and playing "How Insensitive" with Sting. This note is long enough. I'll talk about possible Cuban influences later, unless you're all sick of this. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 09:06:29 -0600 From: Meg Evans Subject: Photos on the Web! G'morning all! First, thank you AGAIN to Ashoke for sharing all his wonderful gifts with us. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Is there still an interest in posting photos and personal so we can take a gander at our fellow BasiaList members? If so, is it at Anders' website? I am, even now, having my production manager, who is bored out of her skull, scan a recent photo of me. Do I e-mail it to Anders when it's ready? Any information on this would help. Also, what became of the chatroom thingie? Or perhaps we should save that for WHEN we have all just returned from Basia's next concert tour and we are all buzzing about the experience! Thank you, Ben, for the Matt Bianco CDnow information, and also please add me to your growing list of members who are interested in acquiring the CD you are working on. Your efforts are GREATLY appreciated. Thank you, also, to Abrazo Juan, for your comprehensive bossa nova, etc. information. Imagine, there I was, growing up in the 60s, and my Dad's record collection was probably chock full of these and other albums -- Getzm,o Gilberto were definitely among them, and, as I told you privately, I used to sing along to Astrud's "Girl From Ipanema" while my Dad played the guitar. What a unique musical era that was (I know -- there have been MANY unique musical eras, but probably none that strike that nostalgic chord in me as strongly). I have LOTS of catching up to do! Fantine, who am I? If Bluey can talk about near death experiences, I suppose I can talk about gender confusions. So here goes... _______________________ The joys of owning a new car and enjoying my favorite SV and Basia songs in surround sound in an automobile being a novelty of the weeks past, I was finally begin to feel the tribulations of owning a white car. I have to point out that not only is Cleveland on the lake, but it also seems to be in an annoyingly perpetual flux of road repairs. Needless to say, as the weeks passed on, the battle between the dirt and debris and the bugs was beginning to show a trend - the bugs were finding increasingly spectular ways of resigning themselves to martyrdom. But pray, why on MY front grille, may I ask? Anyhow, I finally succumbed to the subliminal entomological messages on the fenders and decided to do something about it. And as a true offspring of the communications age, I did what I do best - whipped out some plastic from my wallet, picked up the phone and dailed. SIX weeks later (as in four weeks late), the remedy arrived. Now I would like to point out two things. First, being an engineer in training and a system administrator by profession, I like to spend my spare time rebuilding and refinishing old houses and furtinure, preferring the giddy aftereffects of inhaling copious quantities of hydrocarbon fumes to the distasteful prospects of facing yet another engineering task which requires me to RTFM (popular engineering acronym: Read The F**king Manual). Second, growing up a gay man in a third world country, I always ignorantly prided myself of having avoided the deleterious influences of cross-dressers and drag-queens and a concomitant familiarity, or lack thereof, with women's clothing. Imaging my predicament then, as I stood in front of my somewhat masculine looking car, with a therefore-ill-fitting bra in hand, reading a two page manual, which had been photocopied to the point where the pictures were black or white, staring at terms that were foreign to me. Twilight was fast approaching ("Sure, this will only take 10 minutes", they said). While in the process of contemplating spending three years with a car which I would have to henceforth associate with lingerie, a further disturbing complication arose. The rustling of the bushes nearby had been coming uncomfortably close, and soon the bushes parted and the source of this artful noise, the Friend Neighborhood Skunk (hereafter referred to as FNS), appeared, to inspect the cause of all the commotions and "F*** this" and "F*** that". Throwing all Victorian notions of self-respect to the wind, I turned to the woman in the story for help and after a carefully calculated but gratuitous flashing of breasts (no, said peace of undergarment was not yet in place) accompanied by appropriate honkin' and hootin', FNS was pursuaded to retreate, albeit more alarmed than would make me comfortable. About half an hour later, with the illuminating inspiration of said breasts, the job was done and, having exhausted the possibilities for the day, I and sank into the blissful warmth of a hot bath, a glass of chardonnay and some Phillip Glass, still somewhat dazed from all this talk about tight fits, screws and snap-studs, and contemplating the just-finished act of putting on distinctly feminine acoutrement on this somewhat masculine car, whose statistically largest driver group happens to me mothers in the 40-49 age group. I fell asleep wondering where I fit into this picturial lineage. I would tell you about the nightmares I had, but as of now, my therapist is on her way to the Carribean on an emergency recuperative vacation, following the nervous breakdown she suffered while she tried to decipher the Jungian implications of the same nightmares. So I will refrain from narrating those - the legal repurcussions might grossly exceed the limits of my pocketbook. Studio Sessions: Basia penned almost every track on her albums 'Time and Tide', 'London, Warsaw, New York', 'The Sweetest Illusion'. Live: Nothing captures Basia's verve and versatility better than her 'On Broadway' album, recorded amidst the energy and excitement of her 1994 performances in New York's Neil Simon Theatre." Points of Order! Enough! Comments and "mind-sets" are being attributed to me which do not reflect posts I have made or positions I hold. Point #1: I made no "ramblings" about 45 rpm discs. I have been confused with another list member. I DID playfully ask why one of our colleagues would want to play 33 rpm records at the 45 rpm speed, but that was my sole contribution to that discussion. Point #2: I've made no complaints about off-topic posts, Rather the opposite. Since there is no Basia news, we have to talk about something! Point #2: I earn my living in the arts and entertainment industry. I prize diversity and creativity and champion freedom of expression - especially the right to express ideas and issues that make some "uncomfortable" or opinions which are contrary to my own. Folks can have different opinions and positions and yet all still be valid. My only REQUEST has been that comments, rants, diatribes, etc be directed against TOPICS and not unleashed personally at PEOPLE. I can trade insults with the best of 'em, but find that doing so through e-mail with folks who don't know me can cause problems. E-mail offers no inflection. What may be conceived and sent as playful banter can come across as obnoxious and coarse without a clue as to its original playful intent. Thus, I stand behind my original request, but hey - it is for the list community to decide what they will and will not tolerate, not me. Nor is it my place/desire to be some sort of hall monitor. An artist with Basia's succcess could probably command a clause that would require release upon delivery. Options are usually exercised per album, not per time period. But once exercised, artist must usually deliver within a given time frame. So, essentially, IF Sony has exercised its option, Basia is probably working under a 1yr or 9mo obligation. Alternately, she and Danny could simply be producing the album sans option, and hoping Sony or some other label will pick it up. They made an announcement in Japan that they were cutting back artists - and cutting back on albums by artists they were keeping. No names were mentioned at the time, but I speculated on the list that perhaps that's the reason we had recordings of "Angel's Blush", "Waters of March", and a live version of "Dzien Sie Budzi" but no sign of an album. Perhaps Sony had stopped production on a new Basia album. Roach, of course, throughly dissed the idea - he sticking to his promise of a new album by 1998. I never saw anything about the Sony announcement on any entertainment wire or program - only on business wires. But I wonder now if Basia and Danny are without a record deal - and without a producer to push them. un abrazo, juan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 14:26:52 -0700 From: "William F.G. FINAL NOTICE TO: Jeff Lohr 8447 Norwood Road Millersville, MD 21108 (301) 262-4972 1-888-906-3772 Roach, I'm sending this via the Basia list, e-mail, snail mail and voice mail. I've been very, very patient and understanding about the delays in shipping my Basia items and have even defended you within our Basia community, but its time to bring this to closure. The materials listed below were ordered prepaid February 12th, neither has been received as of today: Get Out of Your Lazy Bed w/ Matt Bianco Whose Side are you On w/ Matt Bianco I want you to either ship these items so that they arrive by July 31, 1998 or refund my money via a cashiers check by the same deadline. If you fail to cooperate, you will leave me little choice but to aggressively pursue the postal fraud charges, and be aware that I have ordered the forms and spoken to my local postal inspector. Please, just ship the items or cashiers check by the deadline and let's put this behind us. Bill McAbee 500 N. I guess the follow up question to this is, what is Basia doing these days? I mean, she was successful and everything, and perhaps she did make enough money to retire forever. Somehow this seems unlikely. I don't know. I am just wondering about pointless things I guess. But I am somehow disturbed by the idea that maybe she indeed IS without a record deal and this is impeding further creative urges. One more thing : does she even know that there is this group of people (as in US) who have kept her spirit alive for years? I think this is quite amazing - this is not just a fan here and there. We are a group of obviously diverse individuals with the common denominator of interest in Basia's music, and we have maintained this relationship for 4 years, which is longer than many relationships these days. I wonder what she would say about that? Your further suggestion that other members ignore me was rather presumptous, don't you think? The irony of the situation above is that you, Lever Lip, were angered at my "personal attacks" of people, and your response was to personally attack me. Isn't that special? So, if you want those two, go check out Amazon! Be sure to compare prices with shipping, though. The original order was: Time and Tide Half a Minute Astrud How Dare You From Now On The applause on How Dare You cuts directly into the opening for From Now On -- when played consecutively, it works OK, but there was a slight audio glitch.
