Mike ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 07:34:16 -0500 From: Larry Lipman Subject: Kenny G et al Kenny G is, for better or worse, believed to be the best-selling jazz artist of all time. I think Chuck Mangione and/or George Benson comes next. Kenny is a VERY kind person (had occassion to visit with him several times at various Grammy/Living Legends functions.) I'm not a fan of most of his songs however, because the production surrounding his tunes has little variety. One song sounds pretty much like the next. It also doesn't help that in most of his tunes, he features the same horn and sound - again, a lack of variety. This could be addressed, but I suspect they are going to wring the "formula" for all that it's worth. He IS quite the master musician, though. I like "selected" Peter White tunes. He can be tremendously expressive in his performance and in the orchestration and production behind his tunes. Some of his material I cherish, other cuts seem to not quite live up to their potential. It's all really about choosing/writing great songs and then handling production in a way that is right for that song, All too often, producers are afraid to stray too far from what has worked in the past. Primarily because we consumers are a fickle bunch, and there is concern that they might aleniate the core audience that drove the artist to his original success. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ See CMUS Employment Opportunities at: http://www.studiomenu.com/empclassifieds.html a service of StudioMenu.Com, http://www.studiomenu.com/index2.html ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Larry Lipman - --------------------------------------------------------------- Division Coordinator; Recording Studio Manager - --------------------------------------------------------------- The University of Memphis Commercial Music Program Campus Box 526546 - 232 CFA Building Memphis, TN 38152-6546 (901) 678-2559 [w/voice mail] FAX: (901) 678-5118 E-Mail: Llipman@memphis.edu ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 10:06:57 -0400 From: "Ashoke S. Well, then - good news for Mike on the album release front: Alanis' new album is scheduled for release on 2 November (3 November for the folks in the USA). Actually, there are a couple of nice songs on her other album. A few, really. Ah - make that several. But that's just me - I tend to like negative music if it's done right... WHEW!!! :) Dr. Dirk writes: >I know that I'm gonna be unpopular, but can somebody please >explain to me the difference between the music of G and Peter White? > >They definetely sound like they have the same producer, but why is G >unpopular and White not? Hmmm... Interesting question. I have often asked the opposite - WHY is Kenny G. so popular as to sell out HUGE arenas while Peter cannot draw that kind of audience? Kenny is unpopular with people who appreciate a little variety in their music, I suppose. Peter is popular because he does have variety - his rhythm tracks are lively instead of repetitious. Both are selling well, tho Kenny G. sells MORE and has won awards Peter claims he doesn't aspire to. Kenny is unpopular with people who like FUNKY jazz as opposed to "smooth jazz", however there are crossovers to be sure. Peter's audience comes from both sides of the stick. I think Peter's music would go over well on stations that play Kenny G that do NOT play other contemporary jazz, however that hasn't happened yet except in isolated incidents. They do not have the same producer. Award-winnning producer Paul Brown does Peter White's albums as well as Boney James's and others but NOT Kenny G. G. might benefit from Paul Brown's production. PW might benefit from G's producer too, but I can't say that for sure until I've heard something recent that I LIKE out of KG's music. Granted, I don't know G's music all that well (I bought some of the early stuff but stopped after the second or third album) however with what I hear on the radio these days I find it difficult to picture people dancing to G's music. People dance to Peter's music all the time. Ah well, it's apples and oranges... :) Don't worry, Dirk. We PW fans wouldn't hit you - at least, I hope not. PW's music is designed to help you feel good, relax, or have something good in your ears as you walk or jog. I listen to PW's music when I drive and it keeps me from wanting to machine-gun the boobalus (species driver cussed prolificussed boobalus doofus) (HA!) riding on my FRONT bumper who just can't seem to get it going because they don't have the required coordination to shift their manual transmission shiny black turbo sex-symbol racy fast sports car (psychoanalyze THAT) smoothly enough not to interrupt the flow of normal traffic. Ah - how wonderful it is to live on the east coast - it's been a decent 25 to 35 degrees out here. Wonderful summer nights, ranging from 15 to 25 degrees). No complaints. Basia should come to Atlanta or Philadelphia and do an outdoor concert tomorrow night. That would just make my summer. BTW those are Celsius temperatures. But it's still pretty comfortable...
